SHANGHAI, Nov 30 (Reuters) - Apple Inc's (AAPL.O) wide exposure to Chinese manufacturing, notable both for its low costs and rising risks, has receded since the COVID-19 pandemic began, company supply chain data shows. "The China supply chain is not going to evaporate overnight," said Eli Friedman, an associate professor at Cornell University who studies labour in China. The Apple supplier data to 2021, however, shows no locations so far that stand out as substantial gainers to match China's decline, according to the Reuters analysis. Apple's annual data covers more than 600 locations among its top suppliers, which represent 98% of Apple's direct spending. While Apple's shift from China is increasingly evident, including in its own supply chain data, so too are the risks from the concentration of operations there.

Chip Outlook Depends on Tech Giants Not Cutting Too Deeply

In what has been a confusing week for the chip industry, one thing is clear: its near-term fate may be in the hands of the same tech giants who are under a lot of pressure to slash their own costs. Quarterly results from Nvidia and a production cut warning from Micron, both on Wednesday, seemingly painted two different pictures. Nvidia managed to beat Wall Street’s estimates for its key data center and videogames businesses while also sounding an optimistic note for 2023, because of new products for both segments. Micron, on the other hand, says it plans to slash production in order to produce less DRAM memory next year than it will this year, as part of an effort to address oversupply caused by the rapid deterioration of major chip markets such as PCs and smartphones. Morgan Stanley’s Joseph Moore , who has covered Micron for more than a decade, called the move “unprecedented” in a note to clients.

Nov 17 (Reuters) - Chip tools maker Applied Materials Inc (AMAT.O) forecast first-quarter revenue above market estimates on Thursday, on hopes that easing supply chain constraints will help it meet pent up demand from chipmakers ramping up production. Shares of the Santa Clara, California-based company rose nearly 3% in trading after the bell. The company posted revenue of $6.75 billion for the fourth quarter ended Oct. 30, compared to analysts' average expectation of $6.45 billion, according to Refinitiv IBES data. The company forecast current-quarter revenue of $6.70 billion, plus or minus $400 million, compared with analysts' average estimate of $6.45 billion. Applied said the outlook includes expected impact of recently announced U.S. export regulations and ongoing supply chain challenges.

ASML Plays the Very Long Chip Game

ASML has one of the best spots in a temperamental industry. A lousy year or even two is no reason for the Dutch maker of chip-manufacturing equipment to shelve some ambitious expansion plans. Business isn’t great for semiconductor manufacturing gear right now—or at least it isn’t going to be. Chip makers are pulling back on their capital-spending plans quickly as their own businesses get hit by slumping demand in key markets such as PCs and smartphones. For 2023, the association projects a 2% decline.
Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) is getting some love Monday in the form of upgrades from UBS and Baird, bolstering our recent decision to halt trimming any more of the chip designer's shares. However, AMD, like many of its peers, has been decimated on Wall Street, losing 48% in 2022. In fact, UBS analysts suggest it may even be possible that shipments fell to near zero in September. As a result, they expect the new chip, which marks a significant improvement in performance to accelerate AMD's market share gains. HONG KONG, Nov 3 (Reuters) - China's Lenovo Group (0992.HK) reported its first revenue decline in 10 quarters as a pandemic-fuelled sales boom comes to an end, with sales especially falling in China as COVID lockdowns took a toll. Lenovo had already seen growth for its first-quarter revenue grind to a halt, at only 0.2%. Global PC shipments declined 15% year-over-year in the third quarter, according to a report published by data firm IDC last month. The report also showed that Lenovo, HP, and Dell saw year-over-year shipments fall by 16%, 28% and 21%, respectively. Chipmaker Qualcomm expects a slump in sales as its forecast for holiday-quarter revenue fell about $2 billion short of Wall Street estimates.

This is in addition to AMD's multiyear push around data center, a central reason we like the company's long-term prospects despite our more cautious view on chips stocks at present . Its more recent areas of focus — data center and embedded — are holding up for now while there's weakness in parts of the company's consumer-focused end markets. In the second quarter, data center revenue was $1.5 billion, up 83% compared with 2021. As mentioned, AMD expected data center revenue in its current fourth quarter to exceed the $1.6 billion it generated in the three months ended Sept. 24. Intel's next-gen data center chip, called Sapphire Rapids, has faced delays and is now set to launch next year.
AMD forecast fourth-quarter and full-year revenue below Wall Street estimates, but Kinngai Chan, an analyst at Summit Insights Group, suggested investors had braced for worse. "While AMD's 4Q22 sales outlook was below consensus expectations, we believe investors are somewhat relieved that AMD expects its data center and embedded businesses to grow sequentially," Chan said. While AMD has been growing its market share quickly in the datacenter, rival Intel Corp.(INTC.O) has seen its share slip even in its latest earnings reported. Su added the North American cloud market was the most resilient of the data center market segments, though she did not expect significant recovery of the China data center market in 2023. While its Data Center revenue was $1.6 billion, up 45% year-on-year.

AMD has been preparing for the PC market to be lackluster in the fisacl fourth quarter, AMD CEO Lisa Su said on a conference call with analysts. AMD said its Data Center segment generated $1.61 billion in revenue in the fiscal third quarter, up 45% and slightly below the StreetAccount consensus of $1.64 billion. AMD plans to launch Epyc data center chips on Nov. 10. During the quarter AMD announced Ryzen 7000 desktop PC chips, and AMD pointed to positive reviews of the products. All four of the segments delivered slightly more revenue than AMD had said to expect in its October warning.
Semiconductor companies are also in the news a lot lately, whether it's the U.S. government cracking down on chip exports to China or innovations in connected cars and artificial intelligence. Since these companies don't need to invest in expensive fabrication facilities, they can run a more agile asset-light business model. EA's bet on its new games comes as the videogame publisher struggles with a slowdown in demand from peaks touched during the pandemic.

SEOUL— Samsung Electronics saw profits slump as prices of memory chips, its main source of income, have plunged as the semiconductor industry goes through a downturn. The South Korean tech giant on Thursday posted a 23.6% decline in net profit in the third quarter compared with the prior year, owing to weak demand for tech products including PCs and smartphones. The weakness echoes sour results seen elsewhere this week with other tech giants like Google’s Alphabet Inc., Microsoft and Facebook parent Meta Platforms Inc.
