When David Cameron resigned as Britain’s prime minister after losing the Brexit vote in 2016, he offered members of Parliament a rueful valedictory: “I was the future once.” Few, perhaps including Mr. Cameron himself, expected to see him return. And yet on Monday morning, there he was, striding up the leaf-strewn driveway of 10 Downing Street to accept an appointment as foreign secretary from the current prime minister, Rishi Sunak. For Mr. Sunak, who has presented himself as a change agent, it is not just a surprising choice, but also a deeply counterintuitive one. Mr. Cameron is nothing if not a bridge to the Conservative past. The decisions he made, and the policies he pursued, are vexing Mr. Sunak’s government today, a dubious inheritance that helps explain the erratic course of a prime minister in political trouble.

Holding down multiple jobs has long been a backbreaking way for low-wage workers to get by. They freeze their employment histories with Equifax and hibernate their LinkedIn profiles, so employers can't see they're holding multiple jobs. Those with multiple jobs also seek out positions they hope will be OE-friendly — light on meetings, as well as on the workload. There's another incentive: Unlike most Americans, those who work multiple jobs don't have to worry about layoffs. There's something radical that happens to a worker's psychology when they have multiple jobs.

Having written about gender, dating, and reproduction for years, I’m struck by how blithely these admonitions to get married skate over people’s lived experience. On the rare occasions that women are actually asked about their experiences with relationships, the answers are rarely what anyone wants to hear. In the late 1990s, the sociologists Kathryn Edin and Maria Kefalas interviewed 162 low-income single mothers in Camden, N.J., and Philadelphia to understand why they had children without being married. “Money is seldom the primary reason” why mothers say they are no longer with their children’s fathers. “There are women that are just out here trying, and the men aren’t ready,” she told me.

Morgan Stanley highlighted several companies that are prepared to withstand — and even benefit from —consumers' shifting preferences this holiday season, as inflationary pressures dampen shoppers' budgets this quarter. According to Morgan Stanley's proprietary monthly survey, most holiday shoppers are looking to see 30% discounts, on average, before they begin spending this holiday season. A strong holiday season should benefit the entire airline industry given the ongoing demand for air travel among consumers across income brackets, according to Morgan Stanley. "Durable goods spending has slowed and that is expected to continue into the holiday season," Wilson said in the note. Toys could emerge as "relative winner" this season as they become a more top-of-mind purchase for parents during the holiday season, analyst Megan Alexander wrote.

(AP) — A federal jury is expected to hear attorneys' closing arguments on Wednesday in the perjury trial of a former top prosecutor for the city of Baltimore. Marilyn Mosby, who served two terms as state's attorney for Baltimore, declined to testify before her attorneys rested their case on the third day of her trial. Mosby's attorneys said she legally obtained and spent the money. U.S. District Judge Lydia Kay Griggsby agreed to move Mosby’s trial from Baltimore to Greenbelt, Maryland, a suburb of Washington, D.C.Mosby’s attorneys argued that she couldn’t get a fair trial in Baltimore after years of negative media coverage.

Why these three money managers are betting big on AI ETFs

The number of exchange-traded funds in the artificial intelligence space has exploded in the past year. Big Tech may have led the initial foray into AI, but money managers are now seeing other sectors jump into the space. Global X ETFs manages the Global X Artificial Intelligence and Technology ETF, which looks at the larger AI names in the space and is an option to play the space in a measured way, he said. Another ETF that can give investors exposure to AI beyond traditional tech is the Global X Robotics and Artificial Intelligence ETF , said Maier. One ETF that launched earlier this year aiming to lean into the generative AI theme is the Roundhill Generative AI and Technology ETF.

Persistent inflationary pressures have led to depressed levels of consumer spending all year, according to Bank of America. Consumers are still spending — in fact, they're spending more than they are earning — as employment levels and hourly wage growth remain fairly strong . Some analysts see an opportunity to pick up shares of battered-down retail stocks. According to Barclay's Yih, spending levels "almost have to be worse" next year. LPL's Roach similarly expects consumers spending to hit a roadblock in the coming months.

In 2016, I was a very broke writer living in New York, mostly stitching together a living through side hustles. When I reached out to RSR about forthcoming work, they told me they were working with Manhattan-based storage space company Manhattan Mini Storage on a series of billboards. They wanted quippy slogans connecting outer space and storage space. The turnaround time was so quick and I needed to keep making money — ideally more than $45 at a time. At that point, I had picked up a summer babysitting gig and was walking toward the subway on Manhattan's West Side Highway when I noticed a billboard from Manhattan Mini Storage.

TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) — Chinese Premier Li Qiang on Sunday pledged to continue deepening reforms, expand free trade zones and relax market access for foreign investment while seeking to generate excitement around a largely lackluster economy. China's economy expanded at a 4.9% annual pace between July-September, beating analysts’ forecasts of about 4.5%, official data show. The expo being held through Friday is an annual event launched by President Xi Jinping in 2018 with the theme of promoting China’s image as being in favor of free trade. This year’s expo brought Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, currently paying an official visit to China which is largely focused on restoring trade links blocked for years due to economic and political tensions. Despite that, Li said China would continue to “actively pursue the accession to the CPTPP and the Digital Economy Partnership Agreement and negotiate for the conclusion of more high standard free trade agreements.”

A boomer recently moved from San Diego to Murfreesboro, Tennessee, for a lower cost of living. The semi-retired business owner said he's house hunting for homes that cost half as much as in San Diego. Murfreesboro, a city in the center of the state a one-hour drive from Nashville, may not have all the skyscrapers and tech headquarters of San Diego. He said he's found a vibrant business community in Tennessee with a slower pace of life and a lower cost of living. "Growth-oriented acquisitions really help to drive the business further, " said Dana Telsey, CEO of Telsey Advisory Group. "New designers can create interest because you can extend your customer base, whether it's extending your customer base older or younger, or extend your customer base globally." The popularity of online shopping has also provoked retailers to pursue mergers that promote expansion online and in stores. If the two cross over, it would form the dreaded "death cross," which can indicate that momentum is weakening or sentiment is souring — and more downside could be on the horizon. It would be the first death cross for the average since late 2022. 'Something bad could happen' The threat of a death cross also underscores challenges specific to the Dow this year. Oppenheimer managing director Ari Wald advised investors to stay away from indexes near or at the death cross like the Dow or the Russell 2000 . Ultimately, technical analysts argue the death cross is both an important yet flawed measure.

Chart analysts are optimistic on the price of gold as the metal tests a ceiling that has previously capped gains. Spot gold has traded around the closely-watched $2,000 level in recent days for the first time since May. And, if previous highs can be surpassed, "we do think it's got some room to run here." That's based on analysis of previous movement in the gold chart to estimate how high the metal could go in the near term.
