CNN —A female bear that was sentenced to death for the fatal mauling of jogger in Italy has been given a stay of execution until May 11, officials in Trento have said. Andrea Papi, 26, was attacked and killed last week while jogging in a public nature reserve in the Trentino–Alto Adige region of northern Italy. In the last 15 years, several bear attacks have been reported, including the nearly fatal attack of a mushroom farmer in 2014 and the 2020 attack of a father and his son while they were hiking. This time, after the fatal attack on Papi the World Wildlife Fund, which had previously petitioned to keep JJ4 alive told CNN they agree that the bear should be put down. There are now four bears, including JJ4, with judicial orders to be culled.
Minneapolis CNN —Last month’s upheaval within the banking sector hasn’t pushed America off course from achieving a soft landing, US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen told CNN’s Fareed Zakaria in an exclusive interview Friday. “I do think there’s a path to bring down inflation while maintaining what I think all of us would regard is a strong labor market,” Yellen said. “We had big shifts in the way people live and low interest rates, and housing prices rose a lot. In the interview with Zakaria, Yellen said Russia should pay for the damage caused in Ukraine and talks are ongoing as to potential mechanisms to make that happen. “That’s a responsibility that I think the global community expects Russia to bear,” she said.
The NYPD's robotic dogs are "out of the pound" again, mayor Eric Adams announced earlier this week. Adams announced during a press conference earlier this week that the city spent $750,000 on two robotic canines the NYPD calls "Digidogs. " He said the dogs can "save lives" in situations where "you can't have police officers going inside because it's dangerous." The announcement comes just two years after the NYPD halted an experiment with the robotic dogs. In addition to the robot dogs, the NYPD will begin testing the StarChase pilot, a device that shoots a GPS-tracker to a stolen car, and the K5 ASR, an outdoor security robot, Adams said during the press conference.
NEW DELHI, April 11 (Reuters) - Three public policy executives of the India team of Samsung Electronics (005930.KS) have resigned, sources told Reuters on Tuesday, in simultaneous departures as the country's biggest smartphone player faces several regulatory headaches. Public policy teams have increasingly critical roles in companies efforts to balance regulatory issues as Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government has boosted domestic electronics manufacturing while backing tougher regulations on tech firms. Binu George, who looked at corporate affairs and strategy, Surabhi Pant who worked on policy and public affairs, and Nikhil Kaura from the same team quit last week, two sources said. They were part of a seven-member team headed by Rajiv Aggarwal, a former bureaucrat who, before joining Samsung in December, led public policy at Meta (META.O) and Uber (UBER.N) in India. Samsung racked up sales of $10.3 billion in India in fiscal 2021-22, with smartphones making up $6.7 billion.
Leaked Pentagon documents highlighted concerns about the Joint Direct Attack Munition weapon. The American-made bomb kit used by Ukraine may have been hamstrung by Russian jammers. One document in particular highlights concerns about US-made bomb kits which have been sent to Ukraine in recent months. One factor is the bomb fuses aren't arming at their release, which Ukraine's air force has worked to fix. Opinion | Ivanka Trump Is Pained

We’ve talked plenty about how Donald Trump’s indictment and arraignment might affect his latest presidential bid. Whither Ivanka? Right here, right now, does she stand by Daddy? At times, the coordinates and calculations have been easy: Daddy’s going to the White House; I will not be left behind. And then Daddy was dethroned, and the traipsing just wasn’t what it used to be.
New York CNN —Old Navy, known for its low-priced basic and trendy seasonal clothing, has adopted an interesting sartorial tactic amid sinking sales. The new dress styles with pockets rolled out into Old Navy stores this month and the retailer said it will also increase the number of summer dresses with pockets. As such, it is a good move for Old Navy to add them,” said Neil Saunders, retail industry analyst and managing director of GlobalData. Old NavyOld Navy’s fourth-quarter sales fell 6% over the previous year, while sales at its stores open at least a year fell 7%. Specifically, Old Navy and Gap brands both said shoppers were pulling back their spending on babies’ and kids’ items.
It's an example of how some startups in Ukraine's dynamic tech sector are switching to pursue military projects. Pavlo Kartashov, director of the Ukrainian Startup Fund (USF), a government-backed organization that seeds technology startups, told Reuters his group resumed funding in October. Demand from the government has driven the shift to military technology, but most of the entrepreneurs who spoke to Reuters said that patriotic duty also played a role. "There are much more ideas in military technology," said Krasovsky, the founder and chief executive of Swedish-Ukrainian Sigma Software Group. Groups like the Polish-Ukrainian Start Up Bridge - a Polish-government backed venture - offer emerging Ukrainian tech companies small grants to fund basic business needs and a co-working space in Warsaw.
Fitbit Versa 4 The Fitbit Versa 4 disappoints as a fourth-generation smartwatch as it lacks third-party app support, has issues with fitness tracking, and doesn’t allow for music storage. Fitbit Sense 2 vs. Fitbit Versa 4: Smartwatch performanceOne of the main nitpicks we have with these watches is their disappointing lack of smartwatch capability. Fitbit Sense 2 vs. Fitbit Versa 4: Health and fitness trackingRick Stella/InsiderThe biggest difference between the Versa 4 and the Sense 2 comes down to their individual health and fitness tracking performance. Fitbit Sense 2 vs. Fitbit Versa 4: Battery lifePerhaps the best feature native to both the Sense 2 and the Versa 4 is their battery life, which lasts roughly six days depending on how it's used. However, due to the Versa 4's shortcomings in both smarts and fitness tracking, it pales in comparison to the Sense 2.
MELBOURNE, March 31 (Reuters) - Formula One world champion Max Verstappen topped the timesheets for Red Bull before taking a late spin at Albert Park in an eventful first free practice at the Australian Grand Prix on Friday. The Dutchman lapped the lakeside circuit in one minute, 18.790 seconds, nearly half a second quicker than second fastest Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes, as two red flags disrupted the session. A second red flag cut the session short by a few minutes as Williams rookie Logan Sargeant came to a halt on track-side grass with an apparent power failure. Verstappen finished his session with a bit of drama, taking a big spin at turn four to ruin his tyres. But he squeezed in a fast lap between the red flags to sandwich himself between Verstappen and Perez's times.
Influencers and members of Gen Z are swapping smartphones for "dumb phones" that can only call and text, CNBC reported. The trend has since expanded to influencers who are documenting their journey of winding down screen time with the use of dumb phones. "What we're trying to do with the Light phone isn't to create a dumb phone, but to create a more intentional phone — a premium, minimal phone — which isn't inherently anti-technology," Hollier told the outlet. TikToker Alex Purdy used a Light brand dumb phone for a month and shared an update with followers in January. In the video, Purdy mentioned some issues with receiving texts, but ultimately encouraged commenters to get one of their own.
The sun blasted Earth with a powerful X-class solar flare on Tuesday, causing radio blackouts. Three more moderate solar flares followed, and we could see more eruptions in the coming days. This may be a precursor to even more solar activity in the coming days. NASA/SDOThat report forecast a chance of more M-class flares in the coming days, with a "slight chance" of another X-class flare on Thursday. More often, though, solar activity triggers energetic displays of Northern Lights, or aurora borealis, sometimes pushing them further south than their normal Arctic occurrence.
This includes what's known as "feature phones" — traditional flip or slide phones that have additional features like GPS or a hotspot. "I think you can see it with certain Gen Z populations — they're tired of the screens," said Jose Briones, dumb phone influencer and moderator of the subreddit, "r/dumbphones." At the same time, HMD's global feature phone sales were down, according to the company. "In North America, the market for dumb phones is pretty much flatlined," said Moorhead. Watch the video to get a look at the dumb phones that may have a promising future in the U.S.
Foot Locker will close 400 stores by 2026 in malls. Anchor vacancies in malls hurt neighbors like Foot Locker and reduce traffic to their stores as well. Eventually, stores like Foot Locker go dark and it becomes harder for the mall to survive. Finding tenants for the 400 Foot Locker spaces will be challenging as big retailers look to stay away from weaker malls. Bed Bath & Beyond will be “much easier to fill than in-mall spaces.”So what happens to all the indoor malls with empty Foot Locker stores and other vacant spaces?

Lockheed Martin Corp. said it is launching a lunar-infrastructure division that would provide communications services for moon missions. Crescent Space Services LLC, a subsidiary of the aerospace giant, will begin operations by developing a satellite network for the moon, according to Joe Landon , its chief executive. That network would allow people and hardware on the lunar surface or in orbit around the moon to communicate back to Earth and provide navigation information, akin to GPS, he said.
March 28 (Reuters) - Russia said on Tuesday it had shot down a U.S.-supplied GLSDB guided smart bomb fired by Ukrainian forces, the first time Moscow has claimed to have intercepted one of the weapons that could double Ukraine's battlefield firing range. Ukraine had long sought the weapons to hit Russian command centres, supply lines and other targets deep behind the front line. The Russian statement said air defence forces had shot down the GLSDB within the last 24 hours, without saying where this had taken place. Widespread deployment of the GLSDB could put far more of Russia's supply lines in eastern Ukraine within striking distance, and force Moscow to move its supplies and ammunition depots further from the front lines. Independent defence experts already credit the delivery of HIMARS to Ukraine last year as helping turn the tide of the war after Russia's initial attempt at a blitzkrieg invasion failed.
Jon Stewart said conversations about Donald Trump should not concern whether or not he should be indicted. "I think the law should always take into account someone's popularity," Stewart said, sarcastically. "I think the law should always take into account someone's popularity," Stewart replied, sarcastically. Stewart also railed against the lack of "accountability in our financial systems" and brought up congressional stock trades as an example. Last week, Trump posted on Truth Social to warn about "potential death & destruction" should he be charged.
Remote workers taking afternoons off are powering a boom in golfing and other leisure activities. Maganas, 60, is one of the many American remote workers powering an afternoon-leisure boom. That type of schedule, which Maganas has had for about 20 years, has become increasingly popular with the widespread adoption of remote work. Research from Nick Bloom, a Stanford University economist who's studied remote work for nearly 20 years, and his colleague Alex Finan tracks a rise in split schedules for those who are remote. For those considering a foray into the split schedule, Maganas recommends giving it a try and seeing whether it affects stress levels.

Apple Watch Series 8 (41mm, GPS) The Apple Watch Series 8 now features a temperature sensor, car crash detection, and low-power mode, making it an even more powerful fitness tracker slash smartwatch. "TikTok has never shared, or received a request to share, U.S. user data with the Chinese government. TikTok's critics fear that its U.S. user data could be passed on to China's government by the app and prompted growing calls to ban the app by U.S. lawmakers. The video app has spent more than two years in talks with CFIUS seeking to reach an agreement on protecting U.S. user data. TikTok has formed a special-purpose subsidiary, TikTok U.S. Data Security (USDS), that currently has nearly 1,500 full-time employees and contracted with Oracle (ORCL.N) to store TikTok’s U.S. user data. "Oracle has already begun inspecting TikTok’s sourcecode and will have unprecedented access to the related algorithms and data models," Chew's testimony said.
That motion, called convection, is what creates strong magnetic fields at the poles and smaller, local magnetic fields at the surface of the sun. That instability causes havoc in the magnetic fields at the surface of the sun, which become much more active. NASA/Solar Dynamics ObservatoryAs the magnetic fields become more confused, bigger sun spots can appear on the surface of the sun. As the sun's local magnetic fields get more tangled and crash into each other, they can explode. "The aurora oval that sits up over the northern and southern poles is a result of currents flowing in the Earth's atmosphere," Owens said.
The Northern Lights could appear in the skies over some northern US states on Friday. The lights could be dazzling thanks to solar winds blowing from a giant coronal hole on the sun. NOAA/Space Weather Prediction CenterThese solar winds are coming from a giant coronal hole on the sun. As that giant hole spread across the corona, it blasted strong, high-speed solar winds into space, in the direction of Earth. They have previously driven the aurora lights as far south as New York and Idaho.
Gap was hoping to tap into a lucrative new revenue stream called retail media, projected to be worth $45 billion in 2023, according to Insider Intelligence, Insider's sister company. Instead of GPS Media, Gap is devoting resources to support GPS Platform, which handles logistics and fulfillment services for other retailers including next-day and two-day shipping. Gap has also started GPS Apparel, which customizes apparel for companies. Lipsman said that Gap also had a disadvantage in retail media because it only sold its own brands. Are you a Gap employee or do you have insight about retail media to share?
