Wolves earn vital points in battle against drop
  + stars: | 2023-04-25 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
Victory put Wolves nine points clear of the bottom three places, joining Palace on 37 points and ended Hodgson’s run of three wins and a draw since returning to Palace in the wake of Patrick Vieira’s sacking last month. But it was largely a nervy night for the fans as Palace threatened to fight their way back into the game and dominated many of the exchanges. But Lokonga was firmly on his feet when he struck a point-blank shot on target five minutes before halftime, only to see the effort saved by diving Wolves keeper Jose Sa. Neves hit the resultant spot kick into the corner of the net to wrap up the win. Writing by Mark Gleeson in Cape Town; Editing by Clare FallonOur Standards: The Thomson Reuters Trust Principles.
Aston Villa go fifth in Premier League with 1-0 win over Fulham
  + stars: | 2023-04-25 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
BIRMINGHAM, England, April 25 (Reuters) - Defender Tyrone Mings scored a brilliant header from a set piece as Aston Villa beat Fulham 1-0 at Villa Park on Tuesday to lift them to fifth in the Premier League table, a step closer to ensuring European football next season. Villa are on 54 points after 33 games, one ahead of Tottenham Hotspur and five behind fourth-placed Manchester United. Fulham, whose European dreams were derailed by a run of four defeats in March and April, are ninth on 45 points. Fulham suffered a blow when midfielder Willian was injured in the warm-up and was unable to play, with Manor Solomon taking his place. Fulham found their feet in the second half but once again their attack failed to fire and, despite enjoying more possession, they did little to threaten Emiliano Martinez in the Villa goal.
Bavarian Nordic CEO Paul Chaplin said the rapid spread of mpox last year was a wake-up call for the company, which is based in Denmark. Bavarian Nordic's Jynneos vaccine is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to protect against both pathogens. Bavarian Nordic will finish delivering an order of 5 million Jynneos doses for the U.S government in the first half of this year. Bavarian Nordic estimates that the potential demand for the mpox vaccine could reach tens of millions of doses. "If you can reengineer a related virus like horsepox, you can engineer variola, which is the smallpox virus that infects humans," he said.
Steve Fecht for ChevroletDETROIT – General Motors plans to stop production of its electric Chevrolet Bolt models by the end of this year, CEO Mary Barra told investors Tuesday when discussing the company's first-quarter earnings. The Chevy Bolt EV and EUV, a larger version of the car, make up the vast majority of the company's electric vehicle sales to date. General Motors CEO Mary Barra unveiled the Chevrolet Bolt electric vehicle during the 2016 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. But Bolt sales never caught on as well as many executives hoped, as EV sales overall remained minuscule outside of Tesla . Rampant Newcastle hit Tottenham for six to go third

NEWCASTLE, England, April 23 (Reuters) - Newcastle United obliterated Premier League top-four rivals Tottenham Hotspur with a five-goal salvo in the opening 21 minutes on the way to a 6-1 rout at a rocking St James' Park on Sunday. A game billed as a crucial six-pointer in the race to secure Champions League qualification was effectively all over before the clock had reached 10 minutes as fifth-placed Tottenham collapsed like a pack of cards. It was the second-earliest a team had taken a five-goal lead in Premier League history after Manchester City scored five in the opening 18 minutes against Watford in 2019. The only question left was whether Newcastle would claim their biggest Premier League victory and whether Tottenham could avoid their heaviest top-flight defeat. Newcastle moved above Manchester United into third place with 59 points, six more than fifth-placed Tottenham who have also played a game more and whose hopes of a top-four finish now look to be all but over.

LONDON, April 23 (Reuters) - Dutchwoman Sifan Hassan won the London Marathon on Sunday in a dramatic debut after falling back with an early injury, beating Olympic champion Peres Jepchirchir and defending champion Yelamzerf Yehualaw in what organisers said was the best ever elite women's field for the event. Hassan finished in two hours, 18 minutes and 34 seconds with a desperate sprint in the last 500 metres. The 30-year-old middle-distance athlete looked to be in pain around the hip flexor just under an hour in, falling behind as she stopped and stretched, but she caught up again with the leading pack with just over six kms to go. Hassan has snatched victory from the jaws of defeat before: in the 1500 metres at the Tokyo Olympics she took a hard tumble, picked herself up and charged ahead to win gold. Arsenal looked to recover from the blow but the Germans doubled their lead five minutes later after a defensive mistake. STUTTGART, Germany, April 23 (Reuters) - World number one Iga Swiatek cruised past Aryna Sabalenka 6-3 6-4 to win the Stuttgart Open on Sunday in a repeat of last year's final to confirm her status as a French Open favourite. The Pole, back from injury and gearing up for her French Open title defence next month, and world number two Sabalenka traded powerful baseline blows before Swiatek earned a second breakpoint at 4-3. But she could not break Swiatek back and the Pole held serve at 5-4 to seal her second title of the year.

But Evenepoel attacked again on the next climb to leave the Briton behind with 30 km to go. My back wheel went a bit like it did last year (on a turn)," Evenepoel said. I said I wanted the picture with the jersey to put in my bedroom," Evenepoel added.
April 23 - Manchester City's Riyad Mahrez is hoping that his historic hat-trick against Sheffield United in Saturday's FA Cup semi-final will keep him in coach Pep Guardiola's starting line-up in future games. "When you get an opportunity you have to prove to the coach that you deserve to play." Mahrez, 32, did not feature in either of City's Champions League quarter-final games against Bayern Munich, when Guardiola's team won 4-1 on aggregate. Beer thrown from stands halts another Dutch league clash
  + stars: | 2023-04-23 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
AMSTERDAM, April 23 (Reuters) - Beer thrown from the crowd caused a 15-minute stoppage to the match before PSV Eindhoven secured a 3-0 home win over Ajax Amsterdam in the Dutch league on Sunday in another incident involving objects thrown from the crowd. A similar incident on Saturday caused the abandonment of the league match between second-from-bottom Groningen and NEC Nijmegen. But while Saturday’s game was called off after a plastic beaker of beer struck the linesman, Sunday’s match was only halted temporarily because the beer thrown did not land on anyone on the field. Dutch football has been grappling with abuse from the stands and the throwing of objects. They also decided that if an object is thrown from the terraces but misses, play will be temporarily stopped with the players sent to the dressing rooms.
Soccer Salah proud to equal Fowler’s record in just six years

Salah, and Fowler, are three goals behind Steven Gerrard, the fifth-highest scorer in Liverpool's history, while Ian Rush leads the list with 346. Fowler is a legend for the club, so I’m proud to be equal with him after six seasons. Salah said seventh-placed Liverpool had struggled at the start of the 3-2 victory over Forest, who are battling to avoid relegation. "For the teams fighting to avoid relegation, these are life-or-death games and all games are difficult,” he added. With seven games remaining, Liverpool are six points away from the top four and still aspiring to qualify for the European competitions next season.
MAINZ, Germany, April 22 (Reuters) - League leaders Bayern Munich slumped to a 3-1 loss at Mainz 05 on Saturday, conceding all three goals in a span of 14 minutes in their latest slip-up which could prove costly in the race for the Bundesliga title with five games remaining. Bayern, chasing an 11th straight league crown, are on 59 points and second-placed Borussia Dortmund, on 57, can take over the lead with a win over Eintracht Frankfurt later on Saturday. "Too much has happened to this team and it struggles to bounce back when things don't go its way. We struggle to win matches. They now also risk missing out on the Bundesliga title after suffering a third defeat under Tuchel in seven matches.
DORTMUND, Germany, April 22 (Reuters) - Borussia Dortmund cruised past Eintracht Frankfurt 4-0, with two goals coming from Donyell Malen, on Saturday to take over the lead in the Bundesliga from Bayern Munich with five matches left in the season. For Frankfurt, last year's Europa League winners, it was their eighth league game without a win and they dropped to ninth, out of contention for a European spot. Jude Bellingham opened Dortmund's account in the 19th minute after picking up the ball at the edge of the box, turning on the spot and firing in. Their second goal, five minutes later, was far easier, with keeper Gregor Kobel kicking the ball deep in to the Frankfurt half and Malen slotting in after the ball was headed on twice past a clueless Frankfurt backline. Mats Hummels made it 3-0 with a well-timed header from a Raphael Guerreiro cross before Karim Adeyemi's solo effort set up Dutch striker Malen for his second goal of the evening in the 66th.
April 22 (Reuters) - Americans Allisen Corpuz and Angel Yin charged up the leaderboard to share a one-shot lead at 10-under par after a pair of near-flawless performances in the third round of the Chevron Championship on Saturday. "Been playing really solid these last three days," the 25-year-old said in a televised interview. "I've just been trying to tell myself, you know, get more comfortable in contention, just keep learning from every experience." "It was one of those days -- everything felt so easy and everything felt in sync," she said in a televised interview. The second round of the tournament wrapped up early on Saturday after organisers were forced to halt play due to darkness.

LIVERPOOL, England, April 22 (Reuters) - Diogo Jota and Mohamed Salah were on target as Liverpool edged Premier League strugglers Nottingham Forest 3-2 in a riveting clash at Anfield on Saturday to climb to seventh in the table. Jota restored Liverpool's lead with a sharp finish on the turn in the 55th minute but Liverpool were pegged back again when Virgil Van Dijk's clearing header fell to an unmarked Gibbs-White. Both Forest goals came from long throw-ins and Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp was pleased with the result but frustrated by his side's shaky defensive performance against a team who have the second-worst attacking record in the league. Liverpool sealed the win three minutes after Forest's second when Trent Alexander-Arnold picked out Salah with a low free kick and the Egyptian striker held off Remo Freuler before side-footing past Keylor Navas. Steve Cooper set up Forest with a flat back five, looking to contain Liverpool, and the strategy worked in the first half, though the visitors rode their luck at times.

April 22 (Reuters) - Inter Milan striker Romelu Lukaku will play in the Coppa Italia semi-final second leg against Juventus on Wednesday after his one-match ban was overturned on Saturday by the president of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) as a measure to fight racism. However, FIGC President Gabriele Gravina overturned the suspension after evaluating the report of the Federal Prosecutor's Office, the federation said. "The measure reiterates how the fight against all forms of racism constitutes one of the founding principles of the sporting system," it said. Lukaku was happy with the decision, saying the president had shown great sensitivity to the situation. "This has shown that the desire is there to fight racism."

CNN —After the first test launch of a SpaceX Starship rocket — the most powerful launch vehicle ever constructed — ended in an eruption of flames over the Gulf of Mexico on Thursday, the company sought to frame the mission as a success. Within the space industry, Thursday’s Starship test mission wasn’t considered an outright failure, Caleb Henry, director of research at the space research firm Quilty Analytics, said. The SpaceX Starship exploded after launch for a flight test on April 20, 2023. There isn’t just one Starship vehicle that’s spent years in the development pipeline. The SpaceX rocket that flew on Thursday “was really just a bare bones,” Reisman added.

Michelle Obama admitted it's a "relief" she and her family are no longer living in the White House. Obama also made it clear that she never dreams about living in the White House. In an interview on "The Tonight Show," Fallon pointed out that Obama recently returned to the White House for the first time since her tenure as first lady. Security then had to tell them that wasn't their car, and they had to walk past the presidential and vice presidential motorcade to get to their car in the back of the line. "But the thing was, we were so glad to get in that back motorcade and to go home to our house," Obama said.
