I'm a management and senior policy analyst at the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) in Washington, DC. After transitioning from military to civilian life in 2012, I worked as a policy analyst and technical writer at Sage Management. I love my new role and would've left to pursue a fully remote role if this didn't happen at HUD. I work around these challenges by building relationships with other program offices within HUD to collaborate and get the work done. Within the HUD Veterans Affinity Group, we established the Women's Group to talk monthly with and support women veterans.

Washington CNN —Vice President Kamala Harris has met more than 150 world leaders since becoming vice president. Still, Harris has not always been the first phone call for foreign leaders or officials looking to get a line into the White House. UkraineA month after Russia invaded Ukraine, Harris was dispatched to NATO’s eastern flank on a reassurance mission – one that also came with some sensitive diplomatic smoothing-over. For a foreign policy novice with aspirations for higher office, the war in Ukraine was a rigorous introduction to wartime diplomacy. She has vowed to continue to support Ukraine and impose costs on Russia,” an aide to the vice president said.

SHANGHAI — China's policymakers need to focus on boosting domestic demand, Yi Gang, former head of the People's Bank of China, said Friday at the Bund Summit in Shanghai. "At this point, proactive fiscal policy and accommodative monetary policy are important," he said. In contrast to high inflation in the U.S. and Europe, China's consumer prices fell in 2023 and have only picked up marginally so far this year as domestic demand remains lackluster.

Leeds' allegations weren't part of Carroll's accusations, but the trial judge allowed her testimony because they demonstrated what Carroll's lawyers argued was a pattern of behavior by Trump. JD Vance's plan to tackle high childcare costs may not take into account the looming retirement crisis facing millions of older Americans. When Kirk asked how Vance planned to address the issue, Vance suggested extended family members step in to relieve the financial burden on parents. AdvertisementNot many states require childcare workers to have college degrees or certifications. But he may have been referring to a new law in the nation's capital that requires many childcare workers to have a two-year associate degree, among other training. Vance has condemned universal childcare, calling it a subsidy for the affluent and a "class war against normal people."

Those two events are the kind of thing that, in normal times, are tracked mostly by economists and Wall Street types. For former President Donald Trump and the Republicans, the narrative is simple: Anything bad you’re feeling about inflation or the job market? Harris entered the race trailing Trump on a range of issues, including the economy. If that were the whole story, Trump might have a harder time disparaging Harris’ and President Joe Biden’s economic record. If the data doesn’t behave, however, then jobs — not inflation — may become the key economic narrative that Harris and Trump will start talking about in their stump speeches.

U.S. targets Russia over 2024 election influence operation

The DOJ said it was seizing 32 Internet domains "used in Russian government-directed foreign malign influence campaigns colloquially referred to as 'Doppelganger,' in violation of U.S. money laundering and criminal trademark laws." Those alleged efforts include the use of RT, the English-language media network backed by Russia, to influence U.S. opinion. The Biden administration on Wednesday announced sanctions targeting Russian government-backed efforts to manipulate American opinion leading up to the 2024 election. An unidentified Russia Today anchor prepares to go on the air in the RT TV studio in Moscow, June 8, 2018. Investigations later found that there was a coordinated effort by Russia to support his candidacy over the then-Democratic nominee, Hillary Clinton.

US Steel said the future of this and other union-represented plants at the company are at risk unless it gets approval to be purchased by Nippon Steel. US Steel says it has more than 3,000 employees in the state in its remaining steel mills along the Monongahela River just outside of Pittsburgh. How Elon Musk’s endorsement of Trump may have backfired

Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk listens to President Donald Trump during a meeting with business leaders in the State Dining Room of the White House in Washington, Feb. 3, 2017. "They want to make Trump, Elon and people like them look like plutocrats," he said. "Elon Musk created the opportunity that Donald Trump took to unmask himself as rabidly anti-union, and he did that by praising Elon Musk's anti-union, union-busting perspective and endorsing the idea of illegally firing striking workers," he said. Harris, who is not related to Kamala Harris, said he views Musk's endorsement as a net negative. "No one views Elon Musk as a voice of the middle class," he said.

State and local governments often lease or sell land to builders, including affordable housing developers, particularly in areas with high demand for homes. In a rare overlap of goals between the two campaigns, Harris and Trump have both proposed building housing on federal land. Some Republican lawmakers agree that more federal land should be used for homes. The Biden administration has proposed selling hundreds of acres of land in Nevada controlled by the Bureau of Land Management to local governments to build thousands of new homes. But repurposing federal land for new residential communities in Nevada would likely mean more sprawl, which comes with both environmental and economic concerns.

The previous indictment, which clocked in at 45 pages, had included what the US Supreme Court says is the kind of official-act evidence that can no longer be used in prosecuting presidents. The replacement indictment — which uses the same font and spans 36 pages — removes references to Trump's presidential acts with surgical precision, said Michael Bachner, a former Manhattan prosecutor and frequent commentator on Trump's legal travails. But in the new indictment, it's Trump the 2020 presidential candidate, not Trump the former president, who is charged. AdvertisementIn refiling his indictment, Smith was smart to convene a new grand jury rather than re-submit the case to the original panel. Still, the new indictment doesn't guarantee that judges won't throw out the case before it ever reaches a jury.

For years, I didn't enjoy eating at fine dining establishments. Here are three tips from Lewis and chefs in New York City and Washington D.C. for how to best enjoy your time at a fine dining restaurant. But many fine dining establishments offer pre-fixe meals with a set cost that isn't always available ahead of time or rotating menus, so it's not clear what will actually be served that night. "A lot of fine dining establishments may not be transparent about price on their website," Lewis says. You'll probably enjoy your meal more if you don't feel blindsided by a dish or its price.

WASHINGTON — The Harris campaign has tapped Yohannes Abraham for a top role in the presidential transition team, according to a source familiar with the planning. Covington and Burling LLP, the law firm where former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder works, will help the transition team get set up. Abraham's appointment comes as the General Services Administration prepares to engage the Harris and Trump campaigns in the presidential transition process. With Hunter Biden on trial, special counsel spending grows
  + stars: | 2024-08-23 | by ( Katelyn | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +3 min
CNN —Special counsel David Weiss’ office spent a total of $3.4 million over the past six months, a dramatic increase as it took Hunter Biden to trial in Delaware on gun-related charges and secured a conviction of the president’s son. Spending by two other Justice Department-appointed special counsels, Jack Smith and Robert Hur, decreased slightly compared with the six months prior. The disclosures come as courts have upped their scrutiny of special counsel office operations. Hunter Biden and another defendant in a separate criminal case have so far been unsuccessful in attempting to challenge special counsel Weiss’ authority. Challengers including Trump have argued that shouldn’t be allowed because Congress didn’t specifically sign off on the special counsel offices.

This means that CD rates of 5% APY will likely decline and get less competitive. CD ladders can help you earn a great rate for longer, no matter what happens to CD rates. The best CD rates for short-term CDs are currently around 5% annual percentage yield, but that might not stay true for long. Building a CD ladder with terms paying 5% or moreRight now, short-term CDs offer better rates than long-term CDs, so our example CD ladder is shorter-term. CD ladders aren't suited to every purposeWhile CD ladders can be a good strategy for locking in high interest rates while maintaining liquidity, they aren't suited to every purpose.
