How the Current Supreme Court Would Look Under Biden’s Term-Limit PlanIn an opinion essay published on Monday, President Biden proposed two major changes to the Supreme Court: 18-year term limits for justices and a binding code of conduct. Under Mr. Biden’s term-limit plan, presidents would appoint a new Supreme Court justice every two years. Bush era) 1991 By The New York TimesThe Supreme Court now includes six conservative justices, appointed by former Presidents Donald J. Trump, George W. Bush and George H.W. Bush, as well as three liberal ones, appointed by Mr. Biden and former President Barack Obama. Companies with disappointing quarterly results are getting punished more than usual this earnings season. This phenomenon underscores the high expectations going into this season as well as a stock market that's viewed by many as overheated. Case in point, shares of Ford Motors plunged more than 18% on Thursday after the automaker came in short of earnings expectations due to warranty costs. "So far this earnings season, the results for many large bellwether companies have been better than the stock reactions," John Belton, portfolio manager at Gabelli Funds, said in an email. Investors will be closely watching this week's earnings slate , which includes Microsoft , Meta Platforms , Apple and Amazon .

The covert nature of Brahe’s work was common among alchemists of the Renaissance, who kept their knowledge close to the vest. “Tungsten had not even been described at that time, so what should we infer from its presence on a shard from Tycho Brahe’s alchemy workshop?” Rasmussen said. In addition to serving as Brahe's home, Uraniborg functioned as a scientific center where students across Europe came to live and work. And Brahe himself wrote that the king was eager to support the scientist’s work in both astronomy and alchemy. Given the amount of gold found in Brahe’s remains, he may have also taken medicine containing potable, or drinkable, gold.

Bitcoin was last higher by 4.5% at $67,720.83, according to Coin Metrics, and ether advanced 4% to $3,248.25. In equities, the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite and the broad-market S&P 500 — which suffered their worst single trading day since 2022 this week — rallied. Many expect favorable crypto comments from Trump — who in recent weeks has painted himself as the pro-crypto candidate in this year's election — could boost prices in coming days. Still, bitcoin is little changed for the week, while ether is on pace to end the week with an 8% loss.

Small caps should also get a boost from interest rate cuts, which typically translate to disproportionately large gains for the group. That helps confirm what investors are realizing: small caps are the place to be. When large caps sneeze, the market catches a coldThe small-cap breakout has coincided with large technology stocks breaking down. Small caps also tend to have less of an international presence than their larger peers, so they don't miss out as much when converting overseas profits to dollars. The small-cap index is closely tied to economically sensitive parts of the market, which should continue to participate in this rally.

For Frank Cappelleri, technical analysis — reading charts to identify patterns in stocks and other assets — is not an art or a science. Nvidia 's slump is hitting some technical milestones that suggest the stock could continue to slide, according to Raymond James. Raymond James chart analyst Javed Mirza said in a July 25 note to clients that Nvidia has triggered a "mechanical sell" signal based on a moving average convergence/divergence indicator, or " MACD ," which measures price momentum — and it is not the only technical signal flashing sell. The key level to watch is Nvidia's 50-day moving average, currently around $118 per share, according to Mirza. "A multi-day close below important technical support at the 50-day moving average … would confirm a new short-term corrective phase was underway. If that view spreads to executives at Big Tech companies such as Alphabet, it could result in new orders for Nvidia slowing down.

A subsequent pullback saw the price bounce off that breakout level, which also lined up with the 50-day moving average. This is a sector full of low-volatility, high yielding stocks that have often provided downside protection in down market phases. ES just broke to a new three-month high this week, and the stock features a dividend yield around 4.5%. When the broad market averages take a bearish turn, equity investors are often best served by getting defensive. These three stocks feature improving technical profiles, along with dividend yields well above the average for the S & P 500.

Dover's active portfolio management and commitment to capital returns sweeten the investment case. A New Insight into Donald Trump’s Rise
  + stars: | 2024-07-25 | by ( German Lopez | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: 1 min
A common theory about Donald Trump’s appeal is that working-class white people feel they fell behind as other groups pulled ahead. He recognized the sentiment and spoke to those voters’ concerns. It turns out that those concerns are grounded in real economic changes, a new study from Harvard researchers shows. The researchers analyzed census and tax records covering 57 million children to look at people’s ability to rise to the middle and upper classes — their mobility — over two recent generations. They found that it had improved among Black people and deteriorated among poor white people, as this chart by my colleague Ashley Wu shows:

The S & P 500 and Nasdaq Composite suffered their biggest one-day losses since late 2022, dropping 2.3% and 3.6%, respectively. The small-cap Russell 2000 was a relative outperformer, ending the day down 2.1%. The Russell is up 7.2% month to date, while the S & P 500 and Nasdaq have fallen 0.6% and 2.2%, respectively, during that time. "I think for the month of August small caps can do something more than 15% even, because they underperformed so dramatically. And the type of move we've seen just the last two weeks is something that only happens at the start of a pretty significant advance for small caps."

It also came in above the high end of management's guidance. But here's the root of Thursday's selling: Honeywell downwardly revised its full-year guidance for segment margin, earnings per share, and cash flow guidance. The changes are tied to the inclusion of previously closed and announced acquisitions, as well as a slower-than expected-rebound for short-cycle businesses. Unfortunately, despite some "pockets of short-cycle strength," other short-cycle businesses "are not accelerating as much as we had hoped," CFO Greg Lewis said on the call. Despite its progressive intentions, the tax failed to raise sufficient revenue for the monarch, as people boarded up their windows to lower their tax liability. Window tax was a property tax based on the number of windows in a house. In addition, the minister also lifted capital gains for stock market investors who cash in within a year from 15% to 20%. While the tax raises more than £3 billion ($3.9 billion) annually, it has given birth to far riskier forms of speculation while simultaneously hurting the stock market. However, given the lofty valuations that Indian stock markets currently trade, the tax to skim the excesses might be a positive development over the longer term.

More specifically, they're taking aim at a widespread rule that requires almost every new apartment building in the US to include at least two separate stairwells. This part of local codes, they say, is an outdated safety measure that really just makes apartment units smaller, more expensive, and darker (yes, darker). City planners there sometimes call these single-stair buildings "Seattle Specials" — they simply wouldn't be possible in pretty much any other city. Almost all of Europe, as well as Asia, Mexico and South America, allows single-stair buildings of six stories or higher. Germany allows single-stair buildings to stretch to about 20 stories, while Switzerland has no such limit.

Even politicians want to have a 'brat' summer

Read previewEven Kamala Harris wants to be a "brat" this summer. Harris is not the first politician to embrace the viral "brat summer" for political gain. So what exactly is a 'brat' summer? Social media has run with the idea of the "brat" summer, and the album's aesthetics have taken on a life of their own. Having a "brat" summer has become less about the album — and more about a state of mind.

XOM is within 7% of its 52-week high of $123.75 from April 12, which also is its all-time high. However, that same volatile trading range since April has become part of a much larger potential bullish pattern — which is best seen on this weekly chart. The area shaded in yellow is the same bullish pattern highlighted above. In other words, a breakout to new highs now finally would help extend the 14-year bullish pattern breakout (2008-2022). The best-case scenario, then, would be seeing XOM breakout on both an absolute and relative basis.
