When Taylor Swift's Eras tour rolls into Singapore next year, Rjay Ignacio said he'll be there — whether he has a ticket or not. "If I'm not able to get a ticket, I'm still going to Singapore," he said. He said he would only travel "for Taylor … I'm a big fan." Swifties, or Taylor Swift fans, spend an average of $1,330 on tickets, food and travel, according to the research company QuestionPro. To avoid facing an "astronomical price surge," Jakarta resident Wid said one of his friends booked a hotel in Singapore before Swift's tour tickets even went on sale.

How to spice up your pantry the Mediterranean way

But it was the tart, earthy, tingly, subtly sweet notes provided by the sumac and Aleppo pepper that made such a lasting impression. Extra-virgin olive oil, yogurt and feta cheese are dietary mainstays, along with seasonal produce, legumes, whole grains and lean proteins. Made from deep-red Halaby chile peppers, Aleppo pepper is named for the Syrian city where it once grew in abundance. Dukkah, a blend of nuts, seeds and warm spices, makes a savory, crunchy topping on everything from soups to salads. Baharat is just one of a combination of warm spices that can punch up a chicken dish the Mediterranean way.

Active ETFs have attracted $100 billion of net inflows over the past 12 months, according to a report from State Street. The growth of active ETFs could help other Wall Street firms take on the industry's dominant players. Some smaller JPMorgan active equity funds that have brought in cash this year include JPMorgan Active Value ETF (JAVA) and the JPMorgan Active Growth ETF (JGRO) . Two-thirds of U.S.-centric active funds fell short of their relevant indexes in the first half, according to a report from Morningstar. Active funds did fare better than passive funds in many categories, like small cap growth — perhaps a more fair comparison, given that passive funds do include fees and trading costs — but underperformed significantly in the popular large-cap blend category, according to data from Morningstar Direct.

Ron DeSantis of Florida on Friday over his support for farmers, saying his chief rival for the Republican presidential nomination would be “a catastrophe” for the country’s agriculture industry. Mr. Trump claimed at a rally in Iowa that Mr. DeSantis would outsource American farming jobs overseas and oppose the federal mandate for ethanol, a fuel made from corn and other crops. Support for ethanol, which Iowa is a national leader in producing, is a quadrennial issue in presidential elections in this early voting state. In 2017, Mr. DeSantis supported legislation that would end the renewable fuel standard, a nearly two-decade-old standard that requires refiners to blend biofuel into gasoline nationwide. Then, he eagerly highlighted what he claimed was his rival’s history of opposing an issue that carries outsize political weight in Iowa.

Cottage Cheese Makes a Comeback

In July, Google searches for “cottage cheese” rose to the highest levels recorded since 2004. “It’s definitely really trendy right now,” said Leah Goebel, a registered dietitian at Northwestern Medicine, adding that cottage cheese contains plenty of nutrients. Compared with other dairy products, cottage cheese is relatively low-calorie. A half-cup serving of full-fat cottage cheese contains around 100 calories, whereas an equal serving of ricotta cheese contains about 190 calories and a three-quarter-cup serving of full-fat Greek yogurt has about 160 calories. Cottage cheese also contains riboflavin, she said, a vitamin that helps our cells grow and produce energy, and phosphorous, which maintains our teeth and bones.

New Mexico trail clash echoes culture war across US West

REUTERS/Andrew HayTALPA, N.M., July 7 (Reuters) - Physiotherapist Spencer Bushnell lives less than a mile from farmer Carlos Arguello in Taos, New Mexico. But they are worlds apart on proposals to lace the foothills they love with up to 71 miles of mountain bike and hiking trails. That put the neighbors on the frontline of a culture war raging across the West as multi-generational families, conservationists and sometimes conservatives fight trail systems sought by incomers and recreationist locals. Two bike trail projects have been nixed in as many months on public land in Oregon and Colorado. Across the United States, Americans are moving to places with trees and trails, many working remotely.

SINGAPORE, July 5 (Reuters) - Prices of Russia's ESPO Blend crude oil shipped to China have surged to a seven-month high as buyers rush to secure cargoes amid higher Russian demand and after Moscow pledged to cut exports. Russia on Monday vowed to slash oil output and exports by 500,000 barrels per day (bpd) in August, with Moscow seeking to nudge up global oil prices in concert with Saudi Arabia. Even before that pledge, Russia's oil exports were expected to fall in July as local refineries ramp up operations following maintenance. They are now out for shopping and Russian oil remains relatively cheap," said one trader. Strong bids from Indian refiners are also helping push up prices for China, three other traders said.

The music industry is set for a radical shift due in part to generative AI, according to Goldman Sachs , which described the new technology as providing "significant opportunities" for the sector. It named five buy-rated stocks to play the trend: Live Nation , Warner Music Group , French digital music company Believe , China's NetEase , and Universal Music Group . "Generative AI will super-charge music creation capabilities and improve productivity," according to Goldman's analysts in a June 28 note. The music industry is well set up to protect its intellectual property given that it is dominated by three large companies that own the majority of artists' catalogs, according to Goldman. Goldman chose Chinese internet company NetEase, which has a music streaming platform, for its use of AI in its music composition tools.

The play is like a musical. This play and this cast require that in a very similar way, but there’s nobody keeping a drumbeat, and there’s nobody playing a melody. So we need to learn how to blend in with the scenery in moments and pop forward in moments. We need to figure out which mole, and when, do we pop out of the hole. No matter what the format is, whether it’s musical theater comedy or whether it is absent of music, there’s still music to it.

At the margins of “The Light Room,” the pandemic persists. We glimpse it in the colorful masks of the children in the park, in the Halloween candy chute, in attempts to schedule vaccines. Mostly, though, Covid is not the protagonist but the force that keeps the family indoors, that amplifies their isolation. “The Light Room” is ultimately, as Zambreno writes, “a collection of meditations.” Some may indeed find them “translucent” — light-catching, yes, but also insubstantial. Readers looking for sturdier insights into what the virus has meant for human history are unlikely to discover them here.

Comparing airline prices, fees, and schedules on your own has become standard procedure. And they've introduced a complex system of additional fees, often hidden, for services that used to be included in the ticket price. In order to give that flight the appearance of being on-time, the airline might list the flight duration as three hours. This practice allows airlines to improve their on-time performance and reduce the risk of delays while ultimately boosting cost efficiency. Since everyone became their own travel agent and airlines began fiercely competing over price and on-time performance, airlines have shifted their focus.

Alibaba's grocery unit Freshippo expanded its number of physical stores in China, the company said on Friday, as the business prepares to spin off from its parent company and go public. Freshippo, known as Hema in China, plans to open 12 new stores across mainland China in major cities including Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou. Last week, JD set up a new business unit to house its grocery business 7Fresh, and appointed a company veteran to lead the division. The expansion comes three months after Alibaba split itself into six separate business units in a bid to get the company back to growth.

June 30 (Reuters) - Coca-Cola (KO.N) will only see a limited impact if the world health agency classifies the artificial sweetener used in its Diet Coke, aspartame, as a possible carcinogen, thanks to its scale of production, analysts said on Friday. But for Coca-Cola, whose low-calorie products accounted for a third of its total volumes sold in 2022, analysts said switching to a natural sweetener could be easier than many other companies that use aspartame. In the past, beverage makers like Coca-Cola and PepsiCo have tweaked their ingredient composition to comply with evolving policy changes. However, PepsiCo could get an edge over its rival as it had moved away from aspartame to a blend of sucralose and acesulfame potassium earlier, CFRA Research said. There ain’t no party like a Jay Gatsby party — in “The Great Gatsby,” F. Scott Fitzgerald’s debonair poster boy of American ambition and the nouveau riche never lets the festivities stop. Neither does Immersive Everywhere’s “The Great Gatsby: The Immersive Show,” a jovial feast for the senses that never, in its lagging two-and-a-half-hour running time, truly rises above the status of a mere attraction. Gatsby hopes to woo Nick’s cousin Daisy, with whom he had a love affair that he’s never forgotten. Several consumer industry trade bodies - whose members use aspartame - on Thursday rejected the IARC’s assessment. Shoppers can find aspartame in Weight Watchers yoghurts, some Snapple drinks and Conagra’s Mrs. Butterworth’s syrups. “Aspartame has been in use as an intense sweetener for more than 30 years in the UK. In 2014 General Mills (GIS.N) swapped the aspartame in Yoplait Light for the sweetener widely known as Splenda. Sweeteners have varying levels of sweetness and price, and are different chemical compounds, making it difficult to simply swap ingredients.

Put a cuttlefish on the spot — or, to be more exact, a series of spots — and it will disappear. But no one is quite sure how a cuttlefish brain takes what the eyes see and gets the muscles of the skin to copy it. Are they watching their own skin as it changes and tweaking it to fit the sand? In an effort to answer this question, scientists have turned to high-resolution videos that can show what individual skin cells are up to as a cuttlefish changes color. The findings are a glimpse at what’s going on in a fundamentally different form of life as it does something that, to our eyes, seems almost magical.

Men are using AI tools like ChatGPT to improve their dating lives, an Attractiontruth study found. Some men said they used AI to generate their bios and craft personalized messages to their matches. Online dating can be tough, but AI might be making it a little bit easier, a new study suggests. Researchers at Attractiontruth, an AI dating coach, surveyed 1,371 men across the sexuality spectrum to see if they are using AI to enhance their dating profiles. In February, OkCupid used ChatGPT to generate matching-questions — like "Are you more of an introvert or extrovert" — that were later added to the platform, according to a company blog post.

Pepsi made its first-ever condiment
  + stars: | 2023-06-27 | by ( Jordan Valinsky | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +1 min
New York CNN —Typically, Pepsi is best with a hot dog… not on a hot dog. The beverage brand is making its first-ever condiment — called “Pepsi Colachup” — that is actually infused with Pepsi. Beginning with a Pepsi reduction, the sauce is infused with a variety of ingredients such as smoked tomatoes; a blend of spices including cinnamon, thyme, oregano and paprika; plus onions and ketchup. That results in a “sweet, citrusy taste” of a crisp-tasting Pepsi, created to bring out the spicy flavor notes of a hot dog, Danzi told CNN. The sauce is part of Pepsi’s two-year-old “Better with Pepsi” ad campaign, which ultimately hopes to chip away at Coca-Cola’s drink dominance.
