Colleges and universities have tightened rules around protests, locked campus gates and handed down stricter punishments after the disruptions of pro-Palestinian demonstrations and encampments last spring. Universities have seen just under 950 protest events this semester so far, compared to 3,000 last semester, according to a log at the Nonviolent Action Lab at Harvard University’s Ash Center. About 50 people have been arrested so far this school year at protests on higher education campuses, according to numbers gathered by The New York Times, compared to over 3,000 last semester. When students have protested this fall, administrators have often enforced — to the letter — new rules created in response to last spring’s unrest. The moves have created scenes that would have been hard to imagine previously, particularly at universities that once celebrated their history of student activism.

And comparable sales rose at both Bloomingdale’s and Bluemercury, the company’s luxury brands. Those results are early signs that Macy’s latest strategy of investing in these parts of the business may be working. Macy’s said it had found the accounting error while preparing its results for the quarter, which ended Nov. 2. An investigation was opened and the employee was no longer with the company, Macy’s said. In the same time period of the accounting issue in which the employee hid up to $154 million, the retailer said it had recorded about $4.36 billion of delivery expenses.

On his "Money for Couples" podcast, self-made millionaire and money expert Ramit Sethi often meets couples with varying levels of income and net worth who feel badly about money. Many of the couples think they just need more money to feel better, but that's often not the case, Sethi tells them. For many people, how you feel about money is uncorrelated to the amount in your bank account. The couple earns a combined $365,000 a year and have a $1.5 million net worth, yet they constantly disagree about financial decisions and can't stop worrying about money. Nathan and Linda know their numbers, maybe even too well.

The firing of tear gas came shortly after demonstrators — who traveled 150 kilometers (93 miles) from the restive northwest — began arriving and gathering near Islamabad. They defied a lockdown, previous tear gas and widespread arrests despite a ban on rallies in the city. The government was in talks with Khan’s party to avoid any further violence, officials said. Video on social media showed Khan supporters donning gas masks and protective goggles. Protesters on Sunday night burned trees as police fired tear gas to disperse the crowds.

Italian lender UniCredit on Monday offered to snap up its domestic rival Banco BPM for roughly 10 billion euros ($10.5 billion) in a move it says is separate from its pursuit of German bank Commerzbank . UniCredit said in a statement early Monday that it is offering 6.657 euros for each share — a slight premium on Friday's close price of 6.644 euros. UniCredit said the purchase, which would be an all-stock deal, would allow the bank to "further strengthen its role as a leading pan-European banking group." Monday's news follows a flurry of merger and acquisition announcements in the European banking sector this year. The industry has been considered ripe for consolidation for years, with cash-rich UniCredit often cited as a possible acquirer.

“Gladiator II,” the sequel to the 2000 historical epic, also pulled in an estimated $55.5 million from more than 3,500 locations. With “Gladiator II” and “Wicked,” similar excitement had built up online for months, with many fans gearing up for what they deemed “Glicked” (pronounced glick-id). Similarly, “Gladiator II” and “Wicked” offered moviegoers the opportunity to lean into the contrasting themes. By comparison, Ridley Scott’s “Gladiator II” is an action-packed film with swords, violent battles and ancient warfare. You may not know it by looking at sticker prices in grocery aisles, but Thanksgiving dinner is more affordable than it has been in years. “If your dollar had the same overall purchasing power as a consumer in 1984 … this would be the least expensive Thanksgiving meal in the 39-year history of the AFBF Thanksgiving survey, other than the outlier of 2020,” the authors wrote.
