Democrats have taken an unprecedented risk in pushing President Joe Biden out of the 2024 race. Biden was well on his way to becoming a one-term president. Needing a way to upend the race, Biden's campaign gambled on scheduling the earliest major presidential debate in history. Democrats' crescendoing calls for Biden to step aside on Friday, with at least nine saying Biden should step aside in just one day, underlined how untenable the situation had become. As Atlantic editor Ron Brownstein has pointed out, based on future Senate maps, Democrats could be facing years in the minority.

Here are some key things to know about Trump’s VP pick:Once a Trump critic CNN reported last month that Vance liked tweets in 2016 and 2017 that harshly criticized Trump and his policies. Pivot to support Trump “Like a lot of people, I criticized Trump back in 2016,” Vance told CNN in 2021. Vance earlier this year told ABC he would not have certified the 2020 election results until states submitted pro-Trump electors. Read previewSen. JD Vance of Ohio on Wednesday railed against decades of American policy in his major national moment as the Republican vice presidential nominee. Like former President Donald Trump, Vance underlined a populist Republican Party to the point that he came out to a Merle Haggard hit that was written in protest of the war in Iraq. In selecting Vance, Trump eschewed the traditional considerations in finding a running mate. "He chose to endure abuse, slander, and persecution, and he did it because he loves this country," Vance said. I first saw the trailer for “Twisters” — which opens in theaters on Friday — in May at a movie theater in Houston, where I live. “You ride ’em.”Yee-haw, I thought in the theater, as I wondered if my air-conditioning at home was back on. Last week, another powerful storm battered Houston, as Hurricane Beryl had a brief but eventful landfall on the South Texas coast. A blockbuster romp like “Twisters” is a safe and sanitized way to experience a natural disaster: as a fantasy. But we can’t let an escapist version of the climate crisis blind us to how woefully unready we are for the effects of the real thing.

Tokyo CNN —America’s two most powerful allies in the Pacific are taking their defense ties to new heights amid increasing concerns over China’s assertiveness in the region and North Korean threats, Japan’s top general said Thursday. Yoshida called on Japan, South Korea and the United States to “demonstrate our strong unity domestically and globally to ensure regional peace and stability.”But bilateral cooperation between Japan and South Korea is the most noteworthy result of this week’s meeting in Tokyo. Kim said he and Yoshida “share a lot of the same thoughts,” an acknowledgment of the mutual perspective on the regional threat posed by China and North Korea. Last month, Japan and South Korea joined the US in the inaugural Freedom Edge in the Pacific, a military exercise that focused on ballistic missile and air defense, anti-submarine warfare and more. “Domestic politics remain complicated in Seoul and Tokyo, but policymakers and military professionals want to lock in coordinated responses to North Korea, Russia, and China before any major political changes occur in Washington,” Easley said.

The coalition described Moscow as having "shattered" peace and stability in the West and having "gravely undermined global security." Russia and North Korea deny arms transfers have taken place. Ian Bremmer, founder and president of Eurasia Group, said the latest NATO summit showed that the West and its opponents appeared to be positioning themselves in a "new Cold War posture." Russia, North Korea and Iran are already under substantial international sanctions, and those restrictions on trade and key sectors have arguably pushed them closer together.

The former president had a thick stack of papers on his desk: printouts of Mr. Vance’s copious broadsides against Mr. Trump. Mr. Trump, using an expletive, bluntly told Mr. Vance: You said some nasty stuff about me. This was the first time he was meeting Mr. Trump, and Mr. Vance needed the former president to like him or at least leave the meeting with an open mind. He told Mr. Trump that he had bought into what he described as media lies and that he was sorry he got it wrong. Of all people, Mr. Vance told Mr. Trump, Mr. Vance himself should have understood.

CNN —Many of America’s closest allies were already dreading the prospect of Donald Trump’s return to the White House. Now that the former president has picked JD Vance as his running mate, they potentially have a lot more to worry about. By choosing Vance, Trump has sent a clear signal that, if elected, his America-first foreign policy will be back in force. “JD Vance does not appear to be interested in being a good ally to Europe,” Berzina said. I think Russia has incentive to come to the table right now.

Sam Altman mulled the idea in a recent interview with The Atlantic, saying society may "decide there's some version of AI privilege." The missiles came in as it was responding to a hijacking attempt by pirates, marking the first operational use of such weapons. It was right after this that the Mason first detected inbound anti-ship ballistic missiles. AdvertisementSince their campaign began last fall, the Houthis have launched dozens of anti-ship ballistic missiles from Yemen. Multiple Navy officers with the strike group have applauded their warships' ability to engage the anti-ship ballistic missiles.
