7 of the Republicans who voted to oust McCarthy are essentially offering themselves up as sacrifices. AdvertisementAdvertisementAs Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio continues to hemorrhage support in his quest for the speaker's gavel, a group of Republicans are essentially offering themselves as human sacrifices. Earlier on Friday, 25 Republicans voted against the Ohio Republican, giving him the lowest percentage of votes for the majority party's nominee for speaker since 1859 — before the Civil War. Last night, Republican Rep. Greg Murphy of North Carolina apparently blocked Rep. Nancy Mace of South Carolina — one of the eight — on Twitter after he said she should apologize for "causing this mess." House Republicans are set to vote behind closed doors at 1 pm on whether Jordan should remain the party's nominee.

Rep. Jim Jordan (R., Ohio), chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, arrives for a meeting at the Capitol in Washington, Oct. 18. Photo: Jose Luis Magana/Associated PressThe Republican calamity continues. Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan hasn’t yet persuaded, cajoled, enticed or threatened his way to 217 votes. It will be ironic if Mr. Jordan wins: The founder of the House GOP’s Freedom Caucus must then become the unifier in chief. He would find quickly that making demands in Washington has limits—as does anyone stuck with the speaker’s job.

We need to work on fiscal matters of the (Continuing Resolution) expiring 17 November. So I think for our country we need it, but I think it may delay the speaker’s thing. Rep. Jim Jordan's speakership bid has been thwarted — for now. Call it the revenge of the Republicans you've never heard of — the ones who aren't regularly featured on Fox News, who don't have massive social media followings, and who aren't known for styling themselves as right-wing crusaders. Joe Raedle/Getty ImagesFormer Speaker Kevin McCarthy argued interim Speaker Patrick McHenry already has the powers that some in the anti-Jim Jordan crowd want him to have. “I think you shouldn't have to do a resolution, that McHenry can carry this on as we elect Jim Jordan our speaker,” he said. “We're going in, we want to elect Jim Jordan, and if Jim's numbers drop, it's a lot of that is due to Gaetz’s email that he put out last night,” said McCarthy. Here are key things to know about how Rep. Kevin McCarthy was ousted as House speaker:What happened to McCarthy? McCarthy had been House speaker since January, when he won the gavel after 15 rounds of balloting. Many House Republicans who share some of these ideological views, however, continued to support McCarthy. So many Democrats felt like they didn’t owe him anything, even if a future GOP speaker could be more conservative than McCarthy. Only four Republicans can break with the pack in order for a GOP speaker to be seated.

Most of the nation's power lines are above ground because its cheaper to do it that way. But more utilities have been burying power lines in response to bigger and more destructive natural disasters. That fire was started by lightening, not PG&E's power lines, but it is a reminder of the lasting damage that wildfires can cause. The Public Utilities Commission is considering two other plans that would include both burying power lines and using protective coverings. While burying power lines is the most effective way to prevent wildfires, it is not a quick fix.

The U.S. House of Representatives gaveled into session Tuesday to vote on whether Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, will become its next speaker. The vote on Jordan's candidacy is scheduled to begin around 12:30 p.m. The deeply divided Republican conference has so far been unable to coalesce around a candidate for speaker after McCarthy's ouster. Jordan has said he wants the House to keep voting Tuesday until it chooses a speaker, suggesting Jordan intends to wear down his opposition on the House floor. The House has been leaderless for two weeks after a faction of eight Republicans led by Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida ousted McCarthy in an unprecedented no-confidence vote.

Now may be the time to shop for an office lease. As office vacancies soar to record highs in some markets, office landlords often have no choice but to find new and creative ways to attract new clients. "When you have 55-year-old managing partners of a law firm looking for office space, and they see the golf simulator, they get pretty excited," he said. Long-term leases, which usually feature landlord-financed renovations to the office space, are now being offered with lease-termination options. Office landlords without access to this capital level are often left with only one lever: renting below market price.

Kevin Lamarque | ReutersThe messy race to elect the next Republican speaker of the House of Representatives is injecting chaos into the typically genteel world of high-dollar GOP fundraising, threatening to disrupt a vital element of the Republican strategy to maintain its House majority. One faction of wealthy donors is intent on exacting revenge on the eight Republicans who voted with Democrats to oust former speaker Kevin McCarthy, according to people familiar with the matter. They're all saying, 'don't give, don't raise any money,'" a Republican fundraiser said. "If you have scheduled a fundraiser for any Republican House member who refuses to vote for Scalise, cancel it. Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, talks to reporters after a House Republican Conference meeting in the U.S. Capitol on the speaker of the house nomination on Thursday, October 12, 2023. On this vote, Jordan came away with 152 votes for him, and 55 against, far short of the 217 he would need in a formal vote on the House floor. Following the second vote, lawmakers broke for the weekend, with few signs of what would come next. House Republicans had nominated Scalise Wednesday after he defeated Jordan in a narrow 113-to-99 internal party vote behind closed doors. The lower chamber is effectively in a state of paralysis, unable to move forward with urgent business until a House speaker is elected.

CNN —The public’s impressions of the Republican Party and its leaders in Congress have worsened amid a leadership crisis in the House of Representatives, according to a new CNN poll conducted by SSRS, with Republican-aligned Americans divided over how the GOP should govern. A 56% majority of Republican-aligned voters who back former President Donald Trump say they approve of McCarthy’s ouster, compared with just 37% of those not supporting Trump in the primary. That division is evident across multiple measures of the Republican Party’s performance or of views on its path forward. Asked about Republican leaders in Congress, 51% of Trump supporters approve of their work, while just 35% of other Republican-aligned voters feel the same.
