Scott Darling and his wife drove their 17-year-old son, Asher, to the San Jose airport on Sunday morning and saw him off at the check-in counter. They were back in their car and pulling out of the airport when they got a frantic call: Delta Air Lines wouldn’t let Asher check in because he didn’t have a parent accompanying him on the flight. Darling said. Asher had flown by himself on several occasions, he said, and “we were never notified about this.”Delta has been the slowest U.S. airline to restore its operations, canceling over 1,000 flights each day from Friday to Monday. Another 400 had been canceled as of 7 a.m. on Tuesday, according to the flight tracking website FlightAware.

A.I. Can Write Poetry, but It Struggles With Math

But curiously, these learners — artificially intelligent chatbots — often struggle with math. Chatbots like Open AI’s ChatGPT can write poetry, summarize books and answer questions, often with human-level fluency. These systems can do math, based on what they have learned, but the results can vary and be wrong. chatbots have difficulty with math because they were never designed to do it,” said Kristian Hammond, a computer science professor and artificial intelligence researcher at Northwestern University. The world’s smartest computer scientists, it seems, have created artificial intelligence that is more liberal arts major than numbers whiz.

He says the message wasn't a takedown of Musk or SpaceX, which Maximin refers to as one of "the best engineering companies in the world." Rather, he says, "if you're not happy where you are, if you want different things, you can come to Europe, and we'll help you." "We have done it multiple times over," Maximin says, adding that his company has "the full support of French authorities" to make the relocation happen quickly.

CNN —The Greek Islands, known for their idyllic towns, rugged landscapes and sun-baked beaches, are in the grip of a serious crisis. “They combine lack of water resources — shallow aquifers, rare rivers or dams — with a tremendous rise in water demand during summer,” he told CNN. Kottakis blamed the crisis on Leros on a failure to maintain the island’s two desalination units, which are both in disrepair. Tourism is “unsustainable and zero-planned,” which is leading to a tremendous rise in water demand, said Mylopoulos, the university professor. Multiple wildfires raged and at least six tourists, including British TV presenter and doctor Michael Moseley and an American tourist, died as high temperatures scorched the Greek islands.

Delta Airlines passengers line up for agent assistance at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport on July 22, 2024 in Atlanta, Georgia. The U.S. Department of Transportation's Office of Aviation Consumer Protection is investigating Delta Air Lines over chaos sparked by last week's global IT outage, according to a statement. The DOT cited widespread flight disruptions and customer service failures in which Delta did not uphold commitments to its passengers, it said. On Tuesday, 12% of Delta flights were canceled and 13% were delayed as of mid-morning, according to FlightAware, with some passengers still stranded in airports even days after the outage. The DOT penalized the airline $140 million, a sum 30 times larger than any previous consumer protection violations penalty from the department.

In the days that followed, some airlines were trying to reboot critical computer systems affected by the outage, with many of their passengers still stranded at airports. During a travel meltdown, it may seem nearly impossible for air travelers to find immediate help. Passengers who foot the bill for last-minute lodging and other expenses are entitled to reimbursement if their flights were impacted by an event in the airlines’ control, like the CrowdStrike outage. While working there, I never felt indifferent toward the company; I either loved or hated it. Amazon felt like an engineer-driven company because technical engineers had control over entire projects versus being assigned small tasks by non-technical managers. As a senior engineer, I ran a training on "customer obsession," one of the main "leadership principles" that define Amazon employees. Because there are so many principles, managers could use them in contradictory ways. Amazon on-call shifts were frustrating and exhaustingAt Amazon, most of our product decisions were based on customers.

Nvidia is working on a version of its new flagship AI chips for the China market that would be compatible with current U.S. export controls, four sources familiar with the matter said. The AI chip giant in March unveiled its "Blackwell" chip series, which is due to be mass-produced later in the year. A version of a chip from Nvidia's Blackwell series for the Chinese market would boost the U.S. firm's efforts to fend off those challenges. Expectations are high that the U.S. will continue to keep up the pressure on semiconductor-related export controls. The U.S. wants the Netherlands and Japan to further restrict chipmaking equipment to China, sources have said.

CrowdStrike has issued its own guidance on what affected organizations can do in response to the issue. One example of that has been targeting Spanish-speaking CrowdStrike customers, the company said in a separate blog post. When opened, the file installs malicious software that phones home to a server the hackers control and may use to give additional instructions to the malware. “CrowdStrike Intelligence recommends that organizations ensure they are communicating with CrowdStrike representatives through official channels and they adhere to technical guidance the CrowdStrike support teams have provided,” the company said. “Bad actors routinely try to take advantage of current events, so it’s not all surprising to see them attempting to take advantage of this one,” Callow said.
