Mexican Senate cancels trusts for judiciary worth over $800 mln
  + stars: | 2023-10-25 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
The Senate, controlled by Lopez Obrador's leftist National Regeneration Movement (MORENA) and its allies, approved the measure to do away with the trusts worth some 15 billion pesos ($820 million). Last week, the lower house of Congress voted to wind up the trusts, whose funds are due to be absorbed by the government. Mexico's Supreme Court said this month the elimination of the trusts will affect workers in the judiciary, pointing to their pensions and other social security benefits. "How does the judiciary benefit the Mexican people, or the majority of Mexicans? Critics of Lopez Obrador see the judiciary as a bulwark against his efforts to concentrate power.

Startup workers are on edge

In today's big story, we're looking at why startups that have navigated multiple rounds of layoffs have left their workers feeling defeated. It's a question more and more startup employees are contemplating amid a historic downturn in the industry coupled with a pullback in VC funding. But as Insider's Samantha Stokes and Madeline Renbarger detail, employees are on edge nowadays because of the threat of multiple layoffs in a short time. Why work for a corporate entity and be a cog in the wheel when you can get hands-on experience at a startup? AdvertisementAdvertisementiStock; Rebecca Zisser/InsiderBut just because layoffs are a necessary evil of the startup industry, that doesn't mean employees' concerns aren't warranted.

Johnson of Louisiana, a lower-ranked member of the House GOP leadership team, becomes the fourth Republican nominee in what has become an almost absurd cycle of political infighting since Kevin McCarthy's ouster as GOP factions jockey for power. “I made my decision based on my relationship with the conference,” he said, referring to the GOP majority. House Republicans returned behind closed doors, where they spend much of their time, desperately searching for a leader who can unite the factions, reopen the House and get the U.S. Congress working again. In the end, Johnson won 128 votes on the evening ballot, more than any other candidate. With Republicans controlling the House 221-212 over Democrats, any GOP nominee can afford just a few detractors to win the gavel.

Both men remained valued employees at Carta, with the sales representative even getting promoted just weeks after the alleged "helicopter penis" incident, according to former employees. CEO Henry Ward cofounded Carta, originally called eShares, in 2012 as a service for startups to digitize their paper stock certificates. Today Carta helps startups track their investors, employees manage their equity awards, and venture capitalists administer their funds. The lawsuit says that 10 days after Rogers filed her complaint, Ward "began treating Ms. Rogers in an aggressive and demeaning manner during several meetings." Many of the employees who have spoken out publicly about Carta and Ward have found themselves embroiled in expensive legal battles.

For years, the US Navy has struggled to complete repairs of its ships on time. To reduce workload at domestic shipyards and keep ships at sea, the US is looking for help overseas. That number has improved, but delays persist amid other challenges at Navy shipyards. Salvor was the first ship repaired in India following the signing of a Master Ship Repair Agreement with L&T Shipyard. "It's all hands on deck within the free world right now, and I think something like that would simultaneously enhance our ability to repair ships more quickly and also be a deterrent in the Pacific."

The last U.S. driver before the 22-year-old Florida native to score in a grand prix was Michael Andretti with McLaren in 1993. "It’s amazing to score my first point in F1 on home turf after the challenging weekend I’ve had," said Sargeant, who failed to finish the previous race in Qatar after suffering exhaustion in the heat. The team are seventh out of 10 in the constructors' standings, 10 points clear of eighth-placed Alfa Romeo with four races remaining. The failed full-court press to install Republican Rep. Jim Jordan as House Speaker revealed ugly examples of how violent threats are becoming normalized inside Trump’s GOP. According to Rep. Steve Womack of Arkansas, the strategy behind the threats is to “Attack, attack, attack. In the run-up to that attack, members of the Proud Boys even bragged that they could dress up as Antifa. In the next breath, however, he says that the war in Israel creates moral urgency to push through a Jim Jordan speakership. WASHINGTON (AP) — Republican businessman Perry Johnson suspended his long-shot bid for president on Friday after failing to gain traction in the race. Johnson said the fact that he wasn't permitted to participate in the debates played a major role in his decision. Johnson spent money earlier this year to run an ad during the Super Bowl targeting voters in Iowa, the first state to vote on the GOP presidential field, touting his plan to cut federal spending by 2% every year. He announced his presidential bid in early March shortly after speaking at the opening day of the annual Conservative Political Action Conference. JERUSALEM/BEIRUT, Oct 19 (Reuters) - The Lebanese army said a journalist was killed by Israeli gunfire on Thursday in a southern Lebanon border area where Israel's forces and Lebanese group Hezbollah had a heavy exchange of fire. The Lebanese army described the seven people as media personnel, saying Israeli forces targeted them with machine guns, killing one and wounding another. The incident came nearly a week after a Reuters journalist was killed and other journalists injured in southern Lebanon. Cross-border exchanges have flared since Oct. 7, when Palestinian group Hamas attacked southern Israel and Israeli forces launched a counteroffensive on Gaza. The Israeli military said fighters in Lebanon had fired at least two anti-armour missiles into Israel, striking the village of Manara without causing casualties.

Universal Music has sued artificial intelligence startup Anthropic over "systematic and widespread infringement of their copyrighted song lyrics," per a filing Wednesday in a Tennessee federal court. One example from the lawsuit: When a user asks Anthropic's AI chatbot Claude about the lyrics to the song "Roar" by Katy Perry, it generates an "almost identical copy of those lyrics," violating the rights of Concord, the copyright owner, per the filing. The lawsuit also named Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive" as an example of Anthropic's alleged copyright infringement, as Universal owns the rights to its lyrics. Anthropic was founded in 2021 by former OpenAI research executives and funded by companies including Google , Salesforce and Zoom.
