The Fed aims for a 2% annual inflation rate over the long term. Gasoline prices fell in OctoberWhat's happening under the surfaceEnergy prices can whipsaw inflation readings due to their volatility. That's why economists like to look at a measure that strips out these prices when assessing underlying inflation trends. This pared-down measure — known as the "core" CPI — fell to an annual rate of 4% in October from 4.1% in September. Housing inflation declined in October, to 6.7% relative to a year earlier, and has fallen from a peak over 8% in March 2023, according to BLS data.

Portions of proffer videos – the legal term for videotaped conversations some of Trump’s co-defendants had with prosecutors – were leaked to several news outlets on Monday. The Fulton County district attorney’s office did not immediately respond to CNN’s request for comment about the emergency protective order or leaked videos. The videos provide some new details about efforts by those close to Trump to reverse the election in his favor. In the months since the motion, the district attorney’s office did not follow up to ask for an official ruling. “Instead, defendants must come to the District Attorney’s Office to view confidential video recordings of proffers.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The United States is hosting the annual APEC summit of world leaders this week for the first time since 2011. But the main summit event will actually be on the sidelines: A face-to-face meeting between President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping. The annual leaders' conference brings together heads of nations and other top economic and diplomatic leaders. That decision was regarded as a snub by some APEC leaders. Since then, the APEC leaders have posed together in batik shirts (Malaysia, 1998), Chinese jackets (Shanghai, 2001), flowing ponchos (Chile, 2004) and "ao dai” tunics (Vietnam, 2006.)

ARMATRADING WAS BORN on the Caribbean island of St. Kitts in 1950, and moved to Birmingham, England, at age 7. I didn’t really ask anybody’s opinion, which is how I am still.”Some of Armatrading’s earliest experiences with classical music came through movies. “If you have 18 strings or something, and they’re doing that thing, you’re gonna cry,” she said. Armatrading is adamant that, in her Symphony, she just wanted to sound “like Joan,” but she’s also happy for listeners to bring their own associations. This symphony is by no means the first case of a pop artist to engage in classical composition.

Austan Goolsbee, Chicago Fed president, says how long to hold rates at the current level could be shaped by whether external shocks hit the economy. Photo: David Paul Morris/Bloomberg NewsA Federal Reserve official said the central bank will need to pay close attention to the effects of higher longer-term bond yields to make sure they don’t slow the economy more than expected over the coming year. Austan Goolsbee , president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, said in an interview Wednesday the recent run-up of longer-term borrowing costs could become more important as the central bank shifts its focus from how high to raise interest rates and toward how long to hold them near a 22-year high.

Rick Kot, an executive editor at Viking who oversaw production on the book, told me, “Publishing books in two volumes is difficult just as a commercial venture. Nor does it inspire the “five takeaways” treatment that juicy new memoirs by Britney Spears and Jada Pinkett Smith have. These are my thoughts.” She also considered those other Streisand titles, the ones by other people. Sydney Chaplin (one of Charlie’s kids) played the original Nick Arnstein during her “Funny Girl” Broadway run; they shared a flirtation that Chaplin wanted to consummate and that Streisand wanted to keep professional. It’s that Barbra Streisand endured a parade of harsh workplaces yet never stopped trying to make the best work.

While some analysts are making sweeping claims about how obesity drugs will reshape the industries they cover, the medicines are still in the early days. Known as GLP-1s, the drugs were first approved for diabetes and are now also being used for obesity. But even so, only a sliver of eligible people are actually taking the drugs at this point, said Goldman Sachs analyst Chris Shibutani.
