NASHVILLE — Two weeks ago, while the rest of America was absorbed by the hunt for a doomed submersible, people in Tennessee discovered that their attorney general was conducting a witch hunt. healththe names of people referred to the gender-affirming clinic for careTell me this isn’t a witch hunt. Tell me this isn’t an open campaign of terror against already vulnerable citizens who had every reason to believe that their medical records — their medical records! — were confidential and every reason to believe that the medical clinic of a major university hospital was a safe space. During the Juneteenth holiday weekend, Vanderbilt notified patients whose confidential medical records were now in the possession of the state attorney general.

Pence supported the Supreme Court ruling which struck down affirmative action in college admissions. He said that while affirmative action may have been needed in the past, that is no longer the case. "I really do believe that we can move forward as a country," he told CBS News on Sunday. I believe there was," he told host Margaret Brennan regarding the need for affirmative action. "I mean, there may have been a time when affirmative action was necessary simply to open the doors of all of our schools and universities, but I think that time has passed."

My father said it was indeed a general store, supplying everything from hog feed to eggs to coal for heating. On the map, I believe General’s Store is the building at the bottom and labeled S for store. Black people appeared chiefly in sketches aimed at amusing readers – or when they were accused of crimes against whites. The letter writer said a young white man in a general store had ordered the woman to put down a can of oil she was examining. I could find nothing that accounted for the death of General Bryson, let alone any item that mentioned the Bryson family.

It’s hard to imagine that the aphorism warning about too much of a good thing could ever apply to Clematis, whose charming flowers and mostly lightweight climbing vines make them irresistible. Mr. Long has amassed a collection of more than 400 kinds of Clematis. He is quick to note, however, that you don’t need a collection the size of his to achieve a season-long Clematis display: It’s within reach of every garden. But it does require a strategic choice of varieties, based on staggered bloom times. You also have to master what Mr. Long calls the “refreshing techniques” that can coax maximum flowering.

Thames Water woes could have bigger ripples
  + stars: | 2023-06-28 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
LONDON, June 28 (Reuters Breakingviews) - The UK government is working on plans to nationalise Thames Water, Sky News reports. The indebted utility, which lost its chief executive on Tuesday, may be placed into a special administration regime, with ministers worrying about the company's ability to shoulder 14 billion pounds of debt. UK water companies, privatised by Margaret Thatcher in the 1980s, were supposed to be sleepy investments churning out inflation-proof dividends. Thames, owned by Macquarie (MQG.AX) until 2017, had debt equivalent to 80% of its 17.9 billion pounds regulator-defined asset value last September. Its current shareholders, which include Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement System and China Investment Corporation, last year pledged to invest 1.5 billion pounds to prop it up.

Then the war came, and according to the family history, Union soldiers plundered Sessions’ 27-room house. About 48 years old at the time, he did not stand a chance to succeed without slavery, the family history suggests. ‘A Better Nation’Some historians and genealogists say there is a valuable reason for white leaders – and other white Americans – to explore their links to slavery. Nicka Sewell-Smith, a professional genealogist with the family history website Ancestry.com, said people frequently ask her what to do with such documents. The top Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Meeks said in an interview that he has spent years trying to trace his family history back before 1870.

They include eight chief executives of the 11 states that formed the Confederate States of America, which seceded and waged war to preserve slavery. Although white people enslaved Black people in Northern states in early America, by the eve of the Civil War, slavery was almost entirely a Southern enterprise. South Carolina, where the Civil War began, illustrates the familial ties between lawmakers and the nation’s history of slavery. Each of the seven white lawmakers who served in the 117th Congress is a direct descendant of a slaveholder, Reuters found. In researching America’s political elite, Reuters found names – almost always just a first name – of 712 people enslaved by the ancestors of the political elite.

Opinion | The Nature of Joy

Joy is not a given in the natural world. The baby rabbit I watched cavorting in the pollinator garden was almost certainly born in the nest next to our backyard brush pile. I have seen no other survivor from that litter, and their mother is still the lone adult rabbit in the yard. I think the ever-present threat my wild neighbors live with must tell us something about the nature of joy. Follow The New York Times Opinion section on Facebook, Twitter (@NYTopinion) and Instagram.

FALLING STARWhen Odey set up Odey Asset Management, it was in the afterglow of then British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher's deregulation of the stock market in London's 1986 "Big Bang". Privately educated at the elite Harrow school, Odey left Oxford University and began his career in traditional asset management before launching Odey Asset Management. But fund performance at Odey Asset Management has been a rollercoaster, with Odey renowned for taking risks. London CNN —When The National Portrait Gallery opened its doors to the public in London on Thursday, it was the first time in three years it has done so. The National Portrait Gallery was officially opened by Catherine, Princess of Wales, seen standing in front of Joshua Reynolds’ Portrait of Mai (Omai). Why would the National Portrait Gallery commit to taking this work they wouldn’t see until it’s finished, 90% of which is created by non-artists? What did she do?” Haworth told the National Portrait Gallery about the figure. Some art critics have been scathing of the gallery’s rework, with Jonathan Jones at the Guardian dubbing it “the same old cocktail party.” His review begins: “The National Portrait Gallery has been closed for three years.

Take the orange-and-black insects that were sitting on curled viburnum leaves and about to be exterminated. “That’s why we included a whole section of beneficials on the website,” Dr. Sadof said. The person in charge knew they were conifers, and therefore assumed that if they were alive, they would be evergreen — but dawn redwoods are among the few deciduous conifers. The key, these scientists agree, lies in cultivating our curiosity about what’s going on — even the nasty-looking stuff. “If you go in there with this attitude of ‘yuck,’” Dr. Beckerman said, “that’s the kryptonite of curiosity.”

CNN —Some news organizations are beating around the bush when covering prominent figures who hold detestable views, many of which are wholly unhinged from reality. That has been on display over the last 24 hours on three different fronts: In stories about Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. “This type of normal language news organizations use doesn’t communicate how unhinged some of this stuff is,” media columnist Margaret Sullivan told me Tuesday. But the duty of a journalist and news organizations is to tell the story, without fear or favor. It gives those figures who profit financially and/or politically from extremist rhetoric license to continue trafficking in the destructive noise.

NASHVILLE — One afternoon back in late March, family friends discovered a female cardinal resting on their patio, unable to fly. I couldn’t tell for sure from the photo they sent, but I thought perhaps the bird had flown into a window. Even knowing that the box would be ruined by bird poop, the family’s second grader immediately offered to turn her hand-decorated Valentine’s box into the cardinal’s hospital room. But that’s not what happened when my friends took the Valentine’s box into the backyard the next morning and opened it up. The children were watching as the cardinal flew straight into a nearby tree, where she was joined by a male cardinal who was clearly her mate.

Raw-boned, pallid and angular, with striking, sharp eyes, she had starred on stage, television and film before quitting to take up politics, declaring: "“An actor's life is not interesting". Jackson also won two Emmy awards for her portrayal of England's Queen Elizabeth I in the BBC's 1971 television series "Elizabeth R". After more than three decades on stage and film, Jackson quit acting and took her no-nonsense, straight-talking style into politics. In 1992, at the age of 55, Jackson won a seat in parliament representing the left-of-centre Labour Party in a constituency in north London. In parliament, Jackson was vociferous in her condemnation of the Conservative Party which she accused of instilling a “"dreadful, dreadful moral malaise" in Britain.

Gardening Is Hard Work. Music Can Help.

Stoked by the energy of Brown and Green, my garden took root some 35 years ago. It was James and Al who accompanied me throughout its formative stages, always there as I wielded a boombox and case of cassettes alongside my long-handled shovel and loppers. What is a garden, really, but a real-life version of the hit track from James Brown’s 1970 “Sex Machine” album, pulsing with the actual birds and bees? This is motivational music at its best. Brown and Green kept me moving — if not dancing, exactly — shod in my first pair of proper gardening boots, which were, serendipitously, brown and green.
