A portrait of Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah sits amid destruction in a area targeted overnight by Israeli airstrikes in Saksakiyeh on September 26, 2024. The Israeli army on Saturday officially announced the killing of Hezbollah's leader Hassan Nasrallah, one day after carrying out a large-scale attack on Lebanon. Among other Hezbollah commanders, the IDF said Ali Karki, the commander of Hezbollah's southern front, was also killed in the strike. Israel's announcement marks what would be considered a monumental blow to Hezbollah after several months of conflict. The IDF said Nasrallah was the group's "central decision-maker" and "strategic leader."

AdvertisementIsrael's assassination of Hassan Nasrallah, the head of Hezbollah for over 30 years, is a major escalation in the Middle East conflict. A senior Iranian commander working with Nasrallah was also killed in the attack, Iranian state media confirmed on Saturday. AdvertisementIn the days after that attack, Iran telegraphed its response before launching hundreds of missiles and drones toward Israel in an unprecedented retaliation. AdvertisementIran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in a statement released on Saturday, said Iran stands with Hezbollah but did not threaten any military response. Still, Israel, anticipating a response from Hezbollah and other proxies in the region, and possibly Iran as well, ordered its citizens to avoid large gatherings.

He replaced his predecessor and mentor, Abbas Musawi, as secretary-general of Hezbollah, after he was killed by an Israeli helicopter strike. Hezbollah was formed more than a decade earlier, by Lebanese fighters resisting Israel's invasion. It came after Israel detonated explosions across Lebanon targeting Hezbollah fighters. Days before he was killed, Nasrallah vowed to continue striking Israeli positions until Israel’s offensive in Gaza ends. Fears of an all-out war peaked earlier this month, after Israel unleashed a wave of lethal explosions across Lebanon targeting Hezbollah fighters.

CNN —After Hezbollah confirmed the death of its leader Hassan Nasrallah in an Israeli strike, what – if anything – can it do next? So far, we have yet to see a barrage of rockets from Hezbollah that has caused significant (and known) damage to Israeli targets. But if it tries to project strength and fails, owing to Israeli interceptions, that will just compound its loss of face. It has shown an extraordinarily high threshold for pain over the past months and may have a longer view in hand. Yet most profoundly, it is Israel’s next steps that matter most.

Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu defiantly faced an international community from which he has become deeply isolated amid international condemnation of Israel's war in the Gaza Strip and the military's fresh escalations in Lebanon. As the General Assembly president called the room to order, groups of diplomats stood up and walked out of the room, leaving a sparse audience on the delegate floor. More than 40,000 people have been killed in Gaza in Israel's ensuing war with Hamas. Earlier this month, the General Assembly passed a historic, if symbolic, resolution with an overwhelming majority, demanding that Israel withdraw from the Palestinian territories within a year. The resolutions, like all General Assembly resolutions, are nonbinding and were resoundingly ignored by Israel.

CNN —US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin warned Friday of “devastating” consequences if Israel engages in an all-out war with Hezbollah, telling CNN in an exclusive interview that casualties would “equal or exceed” the number in Gaza. “An all-out war between Lebanese, Hezbollah and Israel would be devastating for both Lebanon and Israel. And again, we anticipate that we’d see a number of people displaced, casualties that, you know, equal or exceed what we’ve seen in Gaza,” Austin told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer. Asked by Blitzer if continued US aid to Israel undermines Washington’s efforts to secure a ceasefire in Lebanon, Austin on Friday reiterated the long-standing alliance. “We’ve been clear from the very beginning that that we’re going to support Israel in its efforts to defend itself,” Austin said.

Israel said Friday that it carried out a strike against Hezbollah's headquarters in Beirut. Israel has increasingly targeted top Hezbollah officials and operatives over the past week, but killing its leadership would be a significant and dramatic escalation. Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari, a spokesperson for the Israeli military, said that the headquarters struck Friday was located underneath residential buildings in Dahieh, a Beirut suburb. AdvertisementIsrael has not publicly acknowledged that it specifically targeted Nasrallah, nor has it commented on his status. Hours after the earlier strikes against Hezbollah's headquarters, the Israeli military said that it was carrying out additional strikes on Hezbollah weapons storage facilities in Beirut.

The strike in the Beirut suburb of Dahiyeh came shortly after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed the U.N., vowing that Israel's campaign against Hezbollah would continue. The Israeli army spokesman, Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari, said it targeted the main Hezbollah headquarters, located beneath residential buildings. Hezbollah's Al-Manar TV said four buildings were reduced to rubble in the blast, so powerful it rattled windows and shook houses some 30 kilometers north of Beirut. Israel has moved thousands of troops toward the border in preparation. At the U.N., Netanyahu vowed to "continue degrading Hezbollah" until Israel achieves its goals, further dimming hopes for an internationally backed cease-fire.

“It’ll take him months on end to train for the job,” said Gadi Eisenkot, a highly respected former Israeli military chief and member of the opposition. Policy and domestic politics are impossible to separate in any democracy, but especially in Netanyahu’s Israel – and especially now. Remarkably, Netanyahu held a security consultation on Wednesday but did not invite his defense minister, an Israeli official told CNN. Hezbollah says that it’s attacking Israel in solidarity with the Palestinian people in Gaza; Israel wants to get Hezbollah to stop firing even without a Gaza ceasefire and hostage deal. With both the Philadelphi Corridor and Hezbollah, Netanyahu’s critics have questioned why, if they were so critical, he waited months to raise the stakes over those issues.

U.S. crude oil on Friday was on pace for its first weekly loss in three weeks, as the prospect of growing oil supplies from Saudi Arabia overshadowed China's efforts to stimulate its economy. The U.S. benchmark West Texas Intermediate is down nearly 6% this week, while global benchmark Brent has pulled back nearly 4%. OPEC+ recently postponed planned output hikes from October to December, but analysts have speculated that the group might delay the hikes again because oil prices are so low. The oil selloff erased gains from earlier in the week after China unveiled a new round of economic stimulus measures. Soft demand in China has been weighing on the oil market for months.

• A diplomatic push is underway to prevent a regional war from erupting in the Middle East, with the US and its allies calling for a 21-day ceasefire across the Israel-Lebanon border as the UN chief urged all sides to “step back from the brink.”• The calls for calm come after Israel’s military said it was preparing for a possible ground incursion into Lebanon. It also said it was calling up two reserve brigades “for operational missions in the northern sector.”• As the conflict escalates, Israel and Hezbollah are trading waves of strikes, forcing tens of thousands in Lebanon to flee their homes.
