NEW YORK, Nov 6 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Elon Musk does well when his back is against the wall. His investment in X now fills the longshot role, which leaves him little to lose. Grok, as it is called, has “real-time access to info via the X platform,” Musk noted in a post, which gives it a “massive advantage” over other AI models. Although the product is still being tested, Musk says it already can out-compute OpenAI’s GPT-3.5 and Meta Platforms' (META.O) Llama 2. X may be near, or already has hit, rock bottom, right where Musk often does his best work.

Elon Musk has announced the introduction of “Grok,” an artificially intelligent chatbot, for some users of X, which the billionaire suggests has a sarcastic sense of humor similar to his own. Musk’s AI startup, xAI, which developed the bot, said in a blogpost that it took inspiration from The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, a comedy sci-fi novel by British author Douglas Adams. Grok “loves sarcasm,” Musk posted on X. Grok is intended to rival ChatGPT, an AI chatbot released to the public by its maker OpenAI last November to much fanfare. Musk has previously expressed concerns about the speed of development of AI, and the technology’s potential to fundamentally change human society for the worse.

ChatGPT, launched in November 2022, now has 100 million weekly active users, Altman said. Even before event attendees were allowed to check in at 8:30 a.m. PST, hundreds had lined up around the block in the Mid-Market neighborhood in downtown San Francisco. For its 2 million developers, OpenAI announced a new GPT-4 Turbo model and slashed the cost by over 50%. To address data and price concerns of big enterprises, OpenAI launched its Custom Models program, offering a dedicated group of researchers to train custom GPT-4 for them. It also touted a new version of its AI model called GPT-4 with vision, or GPT-4V, that enables the chatbot to analyze images. ChatGPT has more than 100 million weekly active users and 2 million developers, spread “entirely by word of mouth," Altman said. The conference comes a week after President Joe Biden signed an executive order that will set some of the first U.S. guardrails on AI technology. The order built on voluntary commitments set by the White House that leading AI developers made earlier this year. OpenAI also faces competition from developers of so-called open source models that publicly release their code and other aspects of the system for free.

CNN —The technology behind viral AI chatbot ChatGPT just got a whole lot smarter. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, an early partner of OpenAI, joined Altman on stage to discuss how his company continues to infuse GPT technology into its suite of 365 tools. Similar to plugins, GPT can connect to databases, be used in emails or facilitate e-commerce orders, the company said. A digital ecosystemOpenAI is also rolling out a GPT Store, starting later this month, to allow GPTs to become searchable. “We are just as annoyed as all of you, probably more, that GPT’s knowledge of the world ended in 2021,” he added.

OpenAI said on Monday that it had created a service that allows individuals and small businesses to build customized versions of its popular online chatbot, ChatGPT, and instantly share them on the internet. Through a new service called GPTs, anyone can quickly customize the chatbot for a particular task without help from additional software or computer code. The owner of a small bed-and-breakfast, for instance, could build a chatbot that answers questions for anyone who stays there. OpenAI, the San Francisco artificial intelligence start-up, has accelerated the release of its A.I. In September, it folded its DALL-E image generator into ChatGPT and released a new version of its popular chatbot that interacts with people using spoken words, much like Apple’s Siri digital assistant.

An AI bot proved it was capable of insider trading and lying about its actions, researchers found. The AI model deceived users "without being instructed to do so," Apollo Research said. AdvertisementAdvertisementAn AI bot on OpenAI's GPT-4 large language model showed it was capable of making illegal financial trades and lying about its actions. But when prompted that the company was counting on Alpha to avoid the effects of a financial downturn, the bot concluded that "the risk associated with not acting seems to outweigh the insider trading risk." Brijesh Goel, a former investment banker at Goldman Sachs, was sentenced on Wednesday to 36 months in prison and fined $75,000 for insider trading.

We are actually going to be looking at this in the very early days of generative AI. casey newtonYeah, this feels like one of the big questions in AI right now. rebecca tushnetSo I see why you say that’s strange, but in fact, it’s exactly how you would make a general-purpose tool. But now, finally, along come these new technologies to take them down a peg, and they’re actually going to have to work for a living. So maybe they’re slapping, like, AI sort of things around the stories that they’re aggregating.

LinkedIn debuted an artificial intelligence-powered chatbot Wednesday that it's billing as a "job seeker coach," and unveiled other generative AI tools for Premium members. The new AI chatbot, which aims in part to help users gauge whether a job application is worth their time, is powered by OpenAI's GPT-4 and began rolling out to some Premium users Wednesday. "We had to build a lot of stuff on our end to work around that and to make this a snappy experience," Berger told CNBC in an interview. The chatbot will also point to potential gaps in a user's experience that could hurt them in the job application process. In the past, many uses of AI in hiring or job applications have faced criticism for bias against marginalized communities.

The early edge in generative AI is paying off for rivals, as was evidenced by Microsoft's recent earnings report. "We believe they are on the cusp of what will be the introduction of an AI App Store over the next year," he said.

Students who use tools like ChatGPT to write their college essays need to walk a fine line. However, the guidance is still pretty vague, especially when it comes to admissions and college essays.
