Among participants who experienced excessive daytime sleepiness and a lack of enthusiasm, 35.5% developed motoric cognitive risk syndrome compared with 6.7% of people without those problems, according to the study published Wednesday in the journal Neurology. “Establishing the relationship between sleep dysfunction and MCR risk is important because early intervention may offer the best hope for preventing dementia,” the authors said. Over a follow-up period of roughly three years on average, 36 participants developed motoric cognitive risk syndrome. But when the authors considered the seven sleep components separately, only daytime dysfunction was associated with 3.3 times higher risk of MCR. Spires-Jones pointed out that for the potential link between daytime dysfunction and MCR, reverse causation is also possible.

Abu Dhabi and Jerusalem CNN —If his first term in the White House is any indication, President-elect Donald Trump is likely to keep the Middle East high on his agenda. But the Middle East has changed significantly since he left office in 2021, and all regional actors are keenly watching how the new president will navigate these shifts. Here’s how Trump’s election could affect key players in the Middle East:Israel and the PalestiniansEnding the wars in Gaza and Lebanon and integrating Israel in the Middle East are likely to be at the top of the president-elect’s Middle East agenda, analysts said. “When the war will be over, you’ll need a real restart in the Middle East,” and Trump will be the best person to bring about a “new Middle East,” Bismuth added. The ex-president will now return to the White House after being ousted by Joe Biden in 2020. In defeating Vice President Kamala Harris, Trump will return to the White House after voters ousted him from office in the 2020 election. CNN —Republicans will win the US Senate majority, CNN projects, shifting the balance of power in Washington. Should Harris prevail, she would face problems in confirming members of her Cabinet and judicial nominees, and the GOP Senate could thwart her domestic plans. Jim Justice was projected to pick up the Senate seat vacated by retiring Democrat-turned-independent Sen. Joe Manchin. And in Nebraska, CNN projects that Republican Sen. Deb Fischer will defeat a stronger-than-expected challenge from independent Dan Osborn, who, along with his allies, outspent Republican forces in the state. Alsobrooks will become just the fourth Black woman elected to the Senate after Democrat Lisa Blunt Rochester, the third, was projected to win Delaware’s open Senate seat earlier in the night.

WASHINGTON — Americans are poised to elect a new Congress, with control of both chambers at stake as every seat in the House of Representatives and one-third of the Senate is up before voters on Election Day. Republicans favored to win the SenateIn the Senate, Democrats currently have a 51-49 edge, but Republicans are favored to capture the majority. They’re all but guaranteed to win an open seat in ruby-red West Virginia, with Democrat-turned-independent Sen. Joe Manchin retiring. If Harris wins, Republicans will need one more seat in addition to West Virginia to capture the Senate. In New York, Republicans are defending four seats they flipped in 2022, propelling them to win the House majority.

In the top-of-the-ticket presidential race, Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump entered the day virtually deadlocked in national polling and surveys of the pivotal battleground states. Senate Democrats and House Republicans were hoping to hang on to thin majorities amid fierce competition. Trump planned to gather family, friends and staff at Mar-a-Lago, his resort in West Palm Beach, Florida, to monitor returns. Along with the rest of the country, Trump and Harris must now await the judgment of voters in the seven swing states — Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Georgia, North Carolina, Arizona and Nevada — to find out who is right. Senate Democrats are also playing defense in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Nevada, Michigan, Wisconsin, Nevada and Maryland.

Rudy Giuliani has yet to surrender any of the valuables he was ordered to turn over to the two election workers he defamed, their lawyers say — including the Mercedes he was spotted riding around in Tuesday in Palm Beach, Florida. That includes some of Giuliani's prized Yankees memorabilia, including a signed Joe DiMaggio jersey and an autographed Reggie Jackson picture. Citing Nathan's allegations, Liman on Tuesday ordered Giuliani to appear before him in New York on Thursday, and rejected a request from Giuliani's lawyer that the hearing be held remotely or in-person next week. He also said that Freeman and Moss were trying to leave the former New York City mayor "penniless and homeless," and that Giuliani wasn't being evasive. "Mayor Giuliani has made available his property and possessions as ordered.

And although Republicans are well positioned to win the majority, Democrats cannot be counted out entirely. Senate seats in the three states that Donald Trump won twice (West Virginia, Montana and Ohio) have always been the most likely to flip. Democrats aren’t trying to defend West Virginia. The three “blue wall” states of Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin – which are also crucial presidential battlegrounds – started the cycle looking more comfortable for Senate Democrats. Keep reading here about the Senate seats that are expected to flip.

Pursuant to a 2013 Supreme Court decision, DOJ monitors only go inside polling places with the agreement of local officials, unless they have a court order. In their federal lawsuits, Missouri and Texas officials argued that their state laws did not permit federal officials to be present at polling places. Florida did not file a lawsuit, but Secretary of State Cord Byrd told the Justice Department in a letter Friday that state law does not allow DOJ officials in polling places. The DOJ was allowed to monitor polling places, he wrote, but was not allowed to send observers inside without a federal court order. Armed federal law enforcement officers are generally prohibited from entering polling places, which are secured by local law enforcement agencies.

Tech billionaire Elon Musk and his business empire stand to reap massive rewards if former President Donald Trump returns to the White House. Elon Musk joins former US President Donald Trump during a campaign event in Butler, Pa., on Oct. 5, 2024. “I love Elon Musk,” Trump said at a rally in July. It’s not clear how Musk and Trump would navigate the ethical questions around a possible government role for the tech billionaire. “He would be in much less trouble in a Trump administration because Trump shares his hostility to regulation and regulators,” Richard Pierce, a law professor at George Washington University specializing in government regulation, told NBC News in an interview earlier this year.

As Election Day finally arrives, election officials, legal experts and researchers are bracing for a flood of disinformation and legal claims as vote counting begins. The final week of the campaign featured three dynamics that could lead to a protracted legal dispute if the results are close, legal experts said. Election experts say that if a clear winner emerges quickly and voting proceeds without major disruptions, large numbers of Americans may have faith in the results. A misleading advertisement from the Election Integrity Network says “The Glitch Is In” alongside a carousel of news coverage of such procedural Election Day issues. The Election Integrity Network’s founder, Cleta Mitchell, promotes her thousand-strong group as a kind of “national neighborhood watch.”Researchers also point to a new kind of infrastructure around documenting and sharing such rumors on Election Day.

Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Arizona, Nevada, Georgia and North Carolina ended up consuming the campaign’s most precious resources: time and money. Hundreds of millions of dollars’ worth of ads blanketed the airwaves in the battlegrounds as Harris and Trump held large-scale, competing rallies. On the eve of the election, Harris and Trump raced to those swing states making their final pitches, each focusing heavily on Pennsylvania, the biggest electoral prize of those states. The Harris campaign, flush with money, has deployed a massive ground game in the battleground states that aims to deliver its voters to the polls. “President Donald J. Trump is going into Election Day stronger than he has in any previous election and if patriots across the country keep the momentum and turn out as expected on Election Day, we will be swearing in President Trump in January,” Tim Saler, a data consultant for Trump and the Republican National Committee, said in a statement.

Body camera video of altercations between officers and fans at the weekend's University of Florida vs. University of Georgia football game proves the officers did no wrong, Jacksonville Sheriff T.K. A sheriff's incident report identified them as father-and-son duo Michael Wayne Long, 58, and Alexander Michael Long, 27, both of Orange Park, Florida. The officers wrestled with Brown before they got him into custody, body camera video shows. Waters said six officers assigned to the game were injured, eight people were arrested, and 35 fans were ejected. In sheriff's body camera video of the first incident, the suspect used the same word, Vorpahl said at the news conference.

ProPublica reported last week that two Texas women died after they faced delays in getting miscarriage care because of the state’s abortion ban. ProPublica’s coverage in September linked two deaths to Georgia’s abortion ban. “The nature of the strict abortion ban in Texas does not allow us as medical professionals to do our jobs,” they wrote. But reproductive rights advocates said stories about the consequences of abortion bans resonate with voters in any part of the country. Their children now are growing up without their mothers because of our state’s abortion ban,” Black said.

CNN —While Tropical Storm Rafael winds remained consistent Monday night, the storm is forecast to strengthen Tuesday and become a hurricane Wednesday, bringing destructive winds and heavy rainfall to the western Caribbean and southern Florida by midweek. Tropical storm watch alerts were issued for the Florida Keys on Monday, joining the existing warnings for Cuba, Jamaica and the Cayman Islands. The Cuban provinces of Cienfuegos, Villa Clara, Sancti Spiritus, and Ciego de Avila, are under Tropical Storm Warnings after being upgraded from Tropical Storm Watch. Ilda Gallardo and her daughter Marley Millian watch a local TV news program as Tropical Storm Rafael approaches, in Playa Baracoa, Cuba, November 4, 2024. Tropical Storm Rafael will also create rough seas and significant storm surges, with expected inundation of up to 3 feet in the Cayman Islands and as much as 9 feet in western Cuba above normal tide levels.

CNN —While Florida generally makes it challenging for people in the state with felony convictions to regain their voting rights, former President Donald Trump will have no issue casting a ballot for himself today in Palm Beach. The first former US president convicted of a felony, Trump is scheduled to be sentenced on November 26. Under Florida law, if a voter has an out-of-state conviction, Florida will defer to that state’s laws for how a felon can regain his or her voting rights. For other Floridians with felony convictions, the rules are not so simple. A successful 2018 ballot initiative restoring voting rights to those who had completed the terms of their sentence was gutted by state Republican lawmakers.
