Twitter is reportedly planning to require users to pay $20 a month to keep their verification. CNN is unlikely to pay for everyone, while Puck said doing so for its dozen writers was a no brainer. One media company, however, would certainly cover the cost of Twitter verification: Puck. "It's a negligible amount of money for most media companies, even the largest that employ thousands of journalists," Kelly said. Long considered Twitter power users, journalists make up a large contingent of verified users on the platform, along with celebrities, organizations, and brands.
But inside the walls at Ware, one of the state’s largest juvenile detention facilities, children have been trying to kill themselves with stunning regularity. In Louisiana, where brutal conditions prompted juvenile justice reform two decades ago, the system is again in crisis. Most Ware guards are Black, as well, though nearly all of its leaders are white, as are the local judge, sheriff and district attorney. “Of course, they still do.” In reports to the state, Ware’s nurses described carpet burns on children’s faces and head-to-toe bruises from restraints. In fact, of the four guards convicted of sexually assaulting children at Ware, Mr. Peace would be the only one imprisoned.
Mike Schenk, chief economist of Credit Union National Association, said in a statement that the "healthy economic growth will not last." CEOs are pessimistic about the future and the hot labor market is coolingCEOs, for one, aren't feeling too good about the economy. "The labor market continues to be hot, even if it's cooled a little bit since the beginning of this year," Bunker told Insider. "Where we're seeing it does signal that it is sectors normalizing, rather than dramatically pulling back postings because they are concerned about short term economic growth." He noted that excess labor demand "gives you a lot of running room here before the labor market actually gets soft."

That beats the 2.4% growth estimate. The advance estimate suggests the US economy is growing again after shrinking in the first two quarters of 2022. That comes after the US economy shrank by 0.6% and 1.6% in the second quarter and first quarter of the year respectively. We also should see a modest positive growth rate after two quarters of negative growth." Kelly said in a note that "this week's GDP report could show surprising strength, especially following two negative quarters and numerous predictions of imminent recession."

Rents are rising all over NYC so I knew my time was coming, but I didn't expect a $200 increase. I'm now sharing groceries with friends, doing zero-spend days, and going to mostly free events. I found four ways to switch up our spending to be able to afford our New York City rent increase. In an effort to cut back on mindless spending, I marked two days on my calendar, every month, that are my zero-dollar days. Finding free eventsOne of the reasons I enjoy living in New York City is because there's always something exciting going on.
LONDON, Oct 25 (Reuters) - In Russia's latest advocacy campaign over its invasion of Ukraine, Moscow has focused on accusations that Kyiv might be planning to use a so-called "dirty bomb" - a conventional explosive device laced with toxic nuclear material. They say Moscow could be making the allegation to justify an escalation of its own. Following is a look at dirty bombs and how they might be used in Ukraine, either as a real threat or as the basis of propaganda:HOW MUCH DAMAGE CAN THEY DO? Dirty bombs do not create city-flattening atomic explosion but are designed to spread toxic waste. A bomb using radioactive caesium from a misplaced or stolen medical device might require the evacuation of an area of several city blocks, making it unsafe for decades.
Companies have paid out eye-popping sums in recent years to settle claims they violated Illinois’s biometric privacy law. Last week, a historic legal judgment against BNSF Railway Co. highlighted that data lapses by third-party contractors also don’t come cheap. A jury’s award of $228 million to truck drivers whose fingerprints were scanned without proper consent signaled that businesses can’t blame data violations on vendors, privacy lawyers say. Illinois’s Biometric Information Privacy Act provides little distinction between companies and contractors that process data on their behalf, upping the ante for firms as they vet potential vendors’ data practices and structure contracts. There is no comprehensive federal privacy law.
Tim Michels, the Republican nominee in Wisconsin’s race for governor, can’t keep his messaging straight on abortion rights — a top issue in the state and nationally. But in recent days, he has done just that — offering support for policies less hard-line than the 1849 law, while continuing to insist his position hadn't changed. The remark stands in stark contrast to comments Michels made during the primary, too, when he called the law an “exact mirror" of his own personal position on abortion rights. While Michels’ latest comment appears to further soften his position on abortion, the governor doesn’t actually have the power to arrest or charge anyone under the 1849 or any other law. In September, just days after pledging to not soften his position, Michels said he would support an abortion ban that includes exceptions for pregnancies resulting from rape or incest.
The widespread voter fraud in the 2020 election as alleged by Trump and his supporters was never proven. Election officials in three other states -- North Carolina, Arizona and Nevada -- reported similar incidents. In 16 North Carolina counties alone, officials noted unusually aggressive observers during May's primary elections, according to a state election board survey. When told to stop, they said they were following guidance from a Republican Party lawyer, said Henderson County Election Director Karen Hebb. As head of the Election Integrity Network, Mitchell is training election observers and is trying to build grassroots networks of conservatives ahead of the midterms.

TripActions, which was last valued at $7.25 billion, aims to modernize business travel. Founded in 2015 by Ariel Cohen and Ilan Twig, the Palo Alto-based company helps businesses manage travel, company cards and expenses for employees. At the time, Cohen said TripActions had originally planned to go public this year but delayed those plans when the market went south. NEW YORK, Sept 28 (Reuters) - R. Kelly, the multiplatinum R&B singer convicted twice this year of sex crimes, will be required to pay at least $300,000 in restitution to some of his victims, a federal judge said on Wednesday. Donnelly sentenced Kelly in June to 30 years in prison, after a jury convicted him of racketeering and other charges. The monthlong trial amplified accusations that had dogged the singer of the Grammy-winning hit "I Believe I Can Fly." Kelly was also convicted last month in Chicago on separate charges of child pornography and luring underage girls for sex. Kelly, whose full name is Robert Sylvester Kelly, is among the most prominent people convicted of sexual misbehavior during the #MeToo movement against such conduct by prominent men.
Laura Kelly, a Democrat, is fighting a tough re-election battle— the issue is almost nowhere to be seen. “What Kelly is doing makes perfect sense," said Bob Beatty, a political science professor at Washburn University in Topeka. “I think the abortion vote is possibly very instructive nationally, and for other states, but not for Kansas,” Beatty said. Doing so also allows Kelly and her campaign to avoid wading into the violent history surrounding abortion rights activism in the state. Still, at a debate between the two candidates at the Kansas State Fair earlier this month, Schmidt accused Kelly of supporting abortion “up until the moment of birth,” which is not accurate.
China's air force has rapidly grown in size and capability, adding advanced jets like the J-20. The J-20 isn't "anything to lose a lot of sleep over," the head of US Pacific Air Forces said this week. But US Air Force leaders do say the US needs to work to stay head of the progress China is making. "We can take a look at it today and say we're not going to lose a lot of sleep. I'll lose sleep if we don't continue to modernize our Air Force to ensure that we stay ahead of where they are."
COLUMBIA, S.C. — A 63-year-old worker died in the public bathroom of a South Carolina department store, but her body was not discovered for four days, authorities said. Bessie Durham, who worked for an outside company that cleans the Belk store at Columbiana Centre, was found dead Monday, investigators said. The Lexington County Coroner’s Office said there are no signs someone killed Durham or that she was using drugs. The store was open regularly over those four days and Kelly said police are investigating to see if anyone was negligent. “We’re still working with the store to find out what their process is to closing down the store, inspecting the store and things of that nature,” Kelly said.
Syed was convicted of killing 18-year-old ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee, whose body was found buried in Baltimore’s Leakin Park in 1999. Family attorney Steve Kelly said Lee's survivors do not believe Baltimore prosecutors will opt for another trial. “The family has very little hope at this point, they are not hopeful that anybody will ever face justice for Hae’s murder,” Kelly said Tuesday. Mosby's hedged comments belie court action moments earlier when her own prosecutor eviscerated the state's successful murder case against Syed. In her arguments in court Monday, prosecutor Becky Feldman attacked virtually every crucial point of the state's case against Syed.
The IPO filing gave the public its best view yet at the company's money-losing financials: notably, $1.6 billion in losses on $1.8 billion in revenue in 2018. The following year that loss increased to $890 million on $886 million in revenue. And for the full year 2018, WeWork lost $1.6 billion on $1.8 billion in revenue. For the first six months of 2019, the firm posted a loss of $690 million on $1.5 billion in revenue. We Co. will be the most highly valued startup to go public since Uber in May."
New autism numbers released Thursday suggest more U.S. children are being diagnosed with the developmental condition and at younger ages. In an analysis of 2018 data from nearly a dozen states, researchers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that among 8-year-olds, 1 in 44 had been diagnosed with autism. As such, she said it may be closer to reflecting the true state of autism in U.S. children than earlier estimates. Autism rates varied widely — from 1 in 26 in California, where services are plentiful, to 1 in 60 in Missouri. Bakian said that likely reflects more coverage for autism services by Medicaid and private health insurers.

Robert and Rebekah Mercer ranked among President Donald Trump's most influential backers in 2016. A representative for Priorities USA Action, a leading pro-Biden super PAC, said the organization wasn't underestimating Trump's reelection forces, Mercers or no Mercers. (Bossie, like former Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski and many others, has recently found himself back in Trump's favor.) The Cambridge Analytica data that the Trump campaign paid for was "so stupidly wrong" and a "complete joke," Spicer added. But sources familiar with the Mercers' political spending said they have no evidence that the Mercers are doing so.
