The mood in Kyiv is somber and defiant as Ukraine marks one year since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion. A year on, thousands of soldiers and civilians have been killed in the conflict, while millions of Ukrainians have become refugees. Ukraine's gross domestic product shrank by as much as 35% in the last year, the World Bank estimates. But what Russia expected to accomplish in a few days turned into an open-ended quagmire for the major military power. The one-year anniversary of the largest military conflict Europe has seen since World War II comes against the backdrop of increased geopolitical tensions.
There have been major moments — some of which were symbolic — that saw the country take steps to harness crucial Western military support and also boost its own morale. While Zelenskyy's presence helped to gain Western support, several other moments helped to sustain it and also boost the country's morale. And in October, Ukraine bombed a crucial bridge connecting Crimea with mainland Russia that Putin's troops used to transport equipment. Ukraine has also attacked several Russian bases in mainland Russia and in Crimea, bringing the war closer to the Russian people. "But these things built — brick by brick — this Western support that has been crucial to them."

WARSAW, Poland— President Biden struck a defiant tone in an address rallying allies and declaring that Russia would never prevail in its war with Ukraine, which is now entering its second year. “Appetites of the autocrat cannot be appeased. They must be opposed,” Mr. Biden said before hundreds of flag-waving Poles and an array of diplomats gathered at the Royal Castle complex here. “Ukraine will never be a victory for Russia. Never,” Mr. Biden said, hours after Russian President Vladimir Putin said Russia would never be defeated on the battlefield.

It added that campaigns are required to appoint a new treasurer within 10 days of the previous treasurer's resignation. That same day, the campaign filed an amended form listing Thomas Datwyler as its new treasurer. In a year-end report filed Jan. 31, the Santos campaign listed as its treasurer a person named Andrew Olson. Currently, the FEC lists Santos as his campaign's own treasurer. The FEC's latest notice adds to the pile of questions surrounding Santos' campaign conduct — including whether he plans to seek reelection.

Defiant Man City see off Villa to close gap on Arsenal
  + stars: | 2023-02-12 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +3 min
MANCHESTER, England, Feb 12 (Reuters) - Manchester City produced a defiant response to the Premier League's charge sheet as they comfortably beat Aston Villa 3-1 to close to within three points of leaders Arsenal on Sunday. Goals by Rodri, Ilkay Gundogan and Riyad Mahrez put the result beyond doubt by halftime as City got back on track following last weekend's loss at Tottenham Hotspur. Villa were left with mission impossible when Mahrez tucked away a penalty in first-half stoppage time after Jacob Ramsey was adjudged to have tripped former Villa player Jack Grealish. Champions City have 48 points from 22 games to Arsenal's 51 from 21 and can go top if they win at Arsenal on Wednesday. "It was a bad result, but we have to learn and use it in the next matches."
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Green called Biden a "liar" after he accused the GOP of wanting to cut Medicare and Social Security. But McCarthy said cuts to Medicare and Social Security are "off the table." She was far from the only House Republican who was outraged at Biden's suggestion that the GOP would end Medicare or Social Security, massively popular federal programs. "Instead of making the wealthy pay their fair share, some Republicans, some Republicans, want Medicare and Social Security to sunset — I'm not saying it's a majority," Biden said before the boos grew louder. Potential cuts to Medicare and Social Security have surrounded negotiations to raise the debt ceiling.
Regional politicians, officials and military officers gathered in the Morelos state capital of Cuernavaca for breakfast in February 2022 to mark Mexico’s annual Army day. Mexican drug lords have a long tradition of buying off politicians in exchange for government protection of their illicit trade. Attempts to reach two of the alleged drug traffickers in the photo – Figueroa and Irving Solano Vera – were unsuccessful. Prosecutors in April asked the Morelos state congress to impeach Blanco so that he could be stripped of that shield. “He likes me very much because I’m not a politician,” Blanco told Reuters, in reference to the president.
WASHINGTON, Feb 2 (Reuters) - U.S. House of Representatives Republicans on Thursday ousted Democrat Ilhan Omar from a high-profile committee over remarks widely condemned as antisemitic, two years after Democrats removed two Republicans from committee assignments. The deeply divided House voted 218-211 along party lines to remove Omar from the Foreign Affairs Committee with Republicans citing the 2019 remarks for which she later apologized. She was in line to be the top Democrat on the foreign affairs panel's Africa subcommittee. [1/6] U.S. Rep. Metaverse spending will continue, although "we're constantly shifting how we execute," he said. The Reality Labs division, tasked with building the metaverse, lost $13.7 billion this year, according to Wednesday's disclosure. Still, Reality Labs would be subject to the same push for efficiency as other parts of the company, Zuckerberg said. David Wehner, the then-CFO who is now chief strategy officer, said spending on the Reality Labs division would increase "significantly" in 2023. Such boasting of the metaverse and the Reality Labs division was nowhere to be found during Wednesday's discussion of the year ahead.
McCarthy said he and Biden did not discuss any details of their next meeting, such as whether White House aides or members of McCarthy's leadership team would participate. Both Biden and McCarthy say passing a debt limit bill is absolutely essential. "I believe you have to lift the debt ceiling, but you do not lift the debt ceiling without changing your behavior. Biden and the White House have so far refused to "negotiate" on a debt limit hike, however. "We will not pass a clean debt ceiling here without some form of spending reform.
House Republicans on Thursday voted to oust Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., from the Foreign Affairs Committee — the latest skirmish in a long-running partisan battle over committee assignments. One Republican, Rep. Dave Joyce, R-Ohio, a senior member of the Ethics Committee, voted present. All 211 Democrats unified behind Omar, who gave an emotional and defiant floor speech before the vote that left many of her colleagues in tears. Last week, several Republicans voiced opposition to the GOP taking action against Omar, threatening to derail the vote given their new, razor-thin majority. Moments before the vote, Rep. Nancy Mace of South Carolina, the lone GOP holdout, emerged from McCarthy's office and announced she would also vote yes.
The House voted on Thursday to remove Ilhan Omar from the House Foreign Affairs Committee. The measure passed on party lines after McCarthy made promises to GOP holdouts. Republican Rep. Dave Joyce of Ohio was the one lawmaker who voted present on what was otherwise a party-line vote. The resolution to remove Omar, sponsored by freshman Republican Rep. Max Miller of Ohio, lists a variety of comments that have "disqualified" the third-term congresswoman from serving on the foreign affairs panel. Republicans also argued that Democrats set a precedent by initiating bipartisan votes during the previous Congress to remove Republican Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia and Paul Gosar of Arizona from committees over their violent rhetoric.
So will Fed Chair Jerome Powell dampen expectations and reiterate that the fight against inflation still has a way to go, or will the Fed show signs that they’re ready to ease up on rate hikes? Jesus Crispin Remulla said the ICC should not impose on the Philippines, which is no longer a signatory to the international tribunal. The ICC, which had suspended the investigation in November 2021 at Manila's request, said in a statement it was "not satisfied that the Philippines is undertaking relevant investigations that would warrant a deferral of the investigation." Current Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr and the vice president, who is Duterte's daughter, did not comment on the latest ICC decision. Human Rights Watch said the ICC investigation was the only credible path to justice for victims and their families. Families of many drug war victims are still seeking justice in long, drawn-out cases.

Morning Bid: BOJ goes for broke
  + stars: | 2023-01-18 | by ( Wayne Cole | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +3 min
SYDNEY, Jan 18 (Reuters) - A look at the day ahead in European and global markets from Wayne Cole. Global bond markets breathed a sigh of relief and U.S. 10-year yields eased 8 basis points to 3.48%. The BOJ will continue to buy bonds in whatever amount necessary to maintain its target for 10-year JGB yields at zero. It was unclear how meaningful this change would be, but the BOJ's defiant stance did see 10-year JGB yields backtrack to 0.36% from an early high of 0.51%. Analysts still suspect the BOJ will again have to buy a record amount of JGBs this month to maintain the ceiling.
Why Egypt is asking its people to eat chicken feet
  + stars: | 2023-01-18 | by ( Nadeen Ebrahim | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +17 min
Abu Dhabi CNN —Egypt’s economic situation is so dire that the government is asking people to eat chicken feet. In Egypt, chicken feet are seen as the cheapest of meat items, considered by most as animal waste rather than food. After the recommendation to switch to chicken feet, the price of one kilogram of the product reportedly doubled to 20 Egyptian pounds ($0.67). But those firms don’t operate like private companies, enjoying special privileges without disclosing their financial data to the public. Experts have questioned why international creditors had not leveraged their loans to drive Egypt’s military out of the economy.
When it comes to queer books, the loudest headlines may be about bans and censorship, but a quieter truth about the state of LGBTQ books reveals the resilience of their authors and commitment of their readers. The queer titles debuting in 2023 are as full of joy as they are examples of resistance, and those in the industry say LGBTQ writers are only getting more ambitious. And while queer young adult books are often the target of book-banning efforts, these titles drove the highest gains in the category, the report found. When it comes to considering a queer future, and what’s next for queer books, that’s something that’s been on the mind of Suzi F. Garcia, the editor of Lambda Literary, a nonprofit that advocates for LGBTQ books and authors. She described the book as having a “queer core” and a sense of hope while discussing issues critical to LGBTQ and Black communities.
