CNN —A group of Russian Navy ships, including a nuclear-powered submarine, arrived in Cuba on Wednesday morning in a sign of strengthening ties between the two Cold War allies. The four Russian ships are now docked in berths usually occupied by cruise ships. The US has also deployed air assets, including a P-8 Poseidon reconnaissance plane, to circle overhead the Russian vessels. The rescue and tugboat Nicolay Chiker, part of the Russian naval detachment visiting Cuba, arrives at Havana's harbour, June 12, 2024. According to a Cuban Armed Forces Ministry statement, none of the Russian ships are armed with nuclear weapons.

Read previewThis as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with a Chicago-area Costco forklift driver who requested anonymity as they are not authorized to speak with the media. I was a supervisor in the warehouse and then ultimately settled down as a forklift driver. Typically, Costco forklift drivers are seen kind of like supervisors, because you designate the flow of the building. I also make more as a forklift driver now than I did ten years ago as a supervisor. You can't keep it on the floor, so you're gonna have to rack it on tall steel shelves, and you're gonna eventually have to bring that stuff down.

Davidson's Gil Luria to upgrade shares to a buy. Apple shares have lagged major technology peers this year due in part to its failure to share a clear-cut AI plan. "We're incredibly sorry that we're only changing this language now," an OpenAI spokesperson told CNBC after the company changed course. In at least two tender offers, the sales limit for former employees was $2 million, compared to $10 million for current employees. Can Apple Rescue the Vision Pro?
  + stars: | 2024-06-11 | by ( Kevin Roose | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
When I first got my hands on an Apple Vision Pro early this year, it felt like magic. I even used the Vision Pro in the back seat of a self-driving Waymo car, which I believe qualifies me for some kind of “Mr. But novelty fades, and today I barely use the Vision Pro at all. Some early adopters returned their Vision Pros for refunds, and lightly used headsets are selling for as little as $2,500 on resale websites. When I took a casual poll of other Vision Pro owners I know — mostly journalists and tech workers — I learned that few of them were using theirs, either.

DETROIT – General Motors is trimming its expected sales and production of all-electric vehicles this year, as U.S. adoption of EVs occurs slower than expected. GM Chief Financial Officer Paul Jacobson said the company now expects production of 200,000 to 250,000 EVs this year, down from a previously announced range of 200,000 to 300,000. Jacobson said GM expects EVs to make up 8% of U.S. sales industrywide this year. GM expects its EVs to be profitable on a production, or contribution-margin basis, once it reaches production of 200,000 units. EV sales totaled 16,425 units, or 2.8% of the automaker's overall sales during the period.

According to one estimate, the world will build the equivalent of a New York City every month from 2020 to 2060. The United Nations estimates 96,000 affordable units should be built a day to house the three billion people who will need them by 2030. Egypt is constructing a capital east of Cairo for 6.5 million residents featuring Africa’s tallest skyscraper. To take the pressure off Greater Jakarta’s 30 million residents squeezed by rising seas, Indonesia is building a new capital on the island of Borneo. Though the government recently scaled back the first phase of construction, it has allocated billions of dollars for the project, which could one day house some nine million people.

The stock's rise has been a boon to employees and insiders at the chip company who own shares. So-called RSUs provide workers with shares at a future date following a vesting period of typically three to five years. Employers can also offer incentive stock options, which allow employees to buy a specified number of shares at a stated – or strike – price. Workers who exercise their ISOs are also subject to capital gains taxes when they sell the stock they've purchased. Nonqualified stock options are another form of equity compensation.

Everybody, including Costco, is chasing Amazon, which accounts for 45% of all U.S. e-commerce sales, according to JPMorgan in a research note Monday. While unlikely to compete at the level of Amazon or Walmart online in the near future, Costco could carve out a lucrative e-commerce lane with its loyal, value-orientated customers. Engaged members want to spend more online at Costco "given the value/quality and cash back," the analysts added. Costco has an "incredible opportunity to better target customers and leverage its rich database of perfect data and is still in its early innings" of e-commerce, JPMorgan said. Adding to the e-commerce story, JPMorgan cited the Costco Logistics network, which has amped up "e-commerce fulfillment of bulky items."

Rodrigo Garrido | ReutersThe euphoria over nuclear energy as a power source for data centers is "overblown," the CEO of a major power provider for large tech companies told CNBC in an interview Monday. Nuclear power, on the other hand, faces challenges in meeting the growing power demand from data centers, Gluski said. Gluski said the "euphoria" over nuclear power is a "little overblown." There is only so much existing nuclear energy that merchant power providers can re-contract to sites such as data centers, the CEO said. "The Street got ahead of it saying you're not going to build renewables, it's all going be nuclear," Gluski said.

The Israeli military denied using civilian vehicles, but declined to say whether the officers conducting the rescue were disguised as militants or dressed as Palestinian civilians. The Israeli military had previously used civilian clothing as a tactic in its operations. But soon after the mission got underway, Israeli soldiers and militants began to exchange fire, according to eyewitness accounts and statements from the Israeli military. A senior Biden administration official tells CNN that Israeli forces did not use an aid truck in the operation.

The timeline between filing the form and the actual IPO ranges, but it usually happens between several months and a year. If the float represents a very low share of total shares outstanding, it means more potential volatility in the stock. The smaller the IPO, or lower the float, the stronger the likelihood of a big swing post-lockup. If we are seeking to determine intrinsic value, the lockup period shouldn't impact our decision on whether the stock is a buy or not. But the way homes are built in the United States makes speed impossible. Years ago, Rupnik’s Croatian grandmother, an architect herself, pointed him to an intriguing answer to this conundrum: modular housing projects built in Europe in the 1950s and ’60s. Sure, prefab complexes, and especially Soviet bloc housing, could be ugly and too homogenous, but the process created millions of housing units in a flash. Hooked, Rupnik started researching modular housing for his doctoral dissertation. Unable to find much more information, Rupnik turned to the Department of Housing and Urban Development, which created the program.

First of all, their main job was to get false information to Adolf Hitler — rather than to steal Nazi secrets. And, secondly, some of these spies didn’t actually exist — they were completely made-up creations of British intelligence. But World War II would see a dramatic expansion of the offensive use of counterspies — not simply to prevent the enemy from knowing things but to actively deceive the enemy by planting disinformation. I also met the man who came up with the D-Day deception, Roger Fleetwood Hesketh, who was a trained architect. He told me that for the D-Day deception, codenamed Fortitude South, he had drawn on different talents.
