NEW YORK, July 11 (Reuters) - Exchange operator Cboe Global Markets (CBOE.Z) on Tuesday filed amended applications to list and trade shares of three spot bitcoin exchange-traded funds, including one by Fidelity, to add surveillance-sharing agreements with crypto-trading platform Coinbase (COIN.O). Shares of Coinbase closed up 9.8% at $89.15 on Tuesday and hit their highest level since Aug. 16 of last year. To meet the standards, an exchange could show it "has a comprehensive surveillance-sharing agreement with a regulated market of significant size related to the underlying or reference bitcoin assets," the SEC said. Nasdaq (NDAQ.O) on June 29 refiled an application with the SEC to list a spot bitcoin ETF by BlackRock (BLK.N), the world's largest asset manager, which also included a surveillance-sharing agreement with Coinbase. Cboe had earlier said it expected to reach such an agreement with Coinbase, which attracted roughly half of U.S. dollar-bitcoin trading in May on its platform.

Rudy Giuliani should be disbarred, a DC legal ethics panel says. The Washington DC Board on Professional Responsibility slammed his efforts to overturn the 2020 election. Ted Goodman, a spokesperson for Giuliani, attacked the DC Bar Association in response to the board's recommendation. "The decision-makers at the DC Bar Association are nothing more than an arm of the permanent regime in Washington," Goodman said. "His hyperbolic claims of election fraud and the core thesis of the Pennsylvania litigation were utterly false, and recklessly so," the board wrote.

A look at the day ahead in European and global markets from Kevin BucklandU.S. policymakers are stealing the spotlight in the markets today, after the Fed cemented its hawkish credentials overnight and Janet Yellen started a trip to China just as Beijing restricts chip-making metal exports. APAC investors clearly took notice, sending stocks sliding and bond yields higher in a signal that Europe should brace for the same. The key takeaway from minutes of the Fed's June meeting overnight is that the unanimous decision to hold wasn't so unanimous after all, with the hawks just biding their time. Traders see a July hike as pretty much assured, but it's still a coin toss whether there will be another after that. Britain will report construction PMIs for June later in the day, as will Germany, which also has factory order figures for May on the release schedule.

So the BoC will press ahead and hike the overnight rate by 25 basis points to 5.00% on July 12, according to 20 of 24 economists in the June 28-July 6 Reuters poll. That would amount to 475 basis points in total since March 2022, taking the overnight rate to a new 22-year high. Inflation is not expected to fall to the central bank's 2% target at least until 2025, according to the poll. The central bank was predicted to keep rates on hold at 5.00% until Q2 2024, said a majority of economists. Rates staying high for longer is expected to boost the Canadian dollar, one of the best performers among G10 currencies this year.

The Fed's own economists aren't sure if the US economy will suffer a recession or not. They believe it's a virtual coin toss whether there's a mild downturn or none at all. Even the Federal Reserve's own economists say it's basically a coin toss, the minutes from the Fed's June meeting show. The central bank's staff predicted that banks would keep pulling back on lending, tightening financial conditions and causing real gross domestic product (GDP) to decline modestly for the next two quarters. They also tend to damp demand, lift unemployment, and pull down asset prices, increasing the risk of a recession.

Nasdaq refiles BlackRock's bitcoin ETF application with SEC

July 3 (Reuters) - Nasdaq (NDAQ.O) refiled an application with the U.S. securities regulator to list an exchange-traded fund by BlackRock Inc (BLK.N) that will reflect the price of bitcoin to add additional details, according to a filing made public on Monday. The move comes after the regulator reportedly had concerns over the initial filings by Nasdaq as being unclear and incomplete. According to Cboe's Fidelity bitcoin ETF filing, the company's platform represented roughly half of U.S. dollar-bitcoin trading in May. The SEC has rejected dozens of spot bitcoin ETF applications in recent years, including one from Fidelity in January 2022. Scientists observed sleeping octopuses and saw their brains enter a deep sleep like ours. This deep sleep is similar to a dream state in mammals, so octopuses may also dream. For the study, scientists spied on multiple sleeping octopuses. By studying the octopus's brain activity, the team found that these cephalopods have similar active and quiet sleep cycles to us mammals and that certain periods of their active stage resembles rapid eye movement sleep. REM sleep is often when humans dream, leading scientists to wonder if octopuses may dream like us.

A drone strike triggered a blast so large it swallowed a Russian tank, suggesting it was laden with explosives. It was so powerful that the explosives hidden inside were likely to be measured in tons. Russian troops are experimenting with repurposing their aging vehicles as rolling bombs. This triggered an explosion and fireball so massive that experts immediately saw it as confirmation of the latest brute force tactic by Russia troops: exploding tanks. The tank exploded in Marinka, a front line in Ukraine's east where the Russians have tried kamikaze tanks recently.

NEW YORK, June 27 (Reuters) - A U.S. judge on Tuesday denied Sam Bankman-Fried's bid to have criminal charges against him thrown out, paving the way for the founder of now-bankrupt cryptocurrency exchange FTX to face trial starting Oct. 2. June 21 (Reuters) - Law firm Fenwick & West has hired its own outside legal team as it faces scrutiny over its role advising now-bankrupt cryptocurrency exchange FTX, including from the company's indicted founder Sam Bankman-Fried. Silicon Valley-founded Fenwick has turned to Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher as its advice becomes a focus of Bankman-Fried’s criminal defense, according to court documents and sources familiar with the situation. Nancy Hart and Kevin Rosen, leaders in Gibson Dunn's prominent law firm defense practice, are representing Fenwick on issues related to FTX, including in the Bankman-Fried criminal case and a federal class action lawsuit, sources said. The firm also counseled Bankman-Fried’s hedge fund Alameda Research, which is at the center of the criminal case against him. Fenwick, one of at least four major law firms to advise FTX, is not the only firm to be targeted by Bankman-Fried.

That threw a new curveball at UK markets, as just last week economists polled by Reuters had unanimously expected the BoE to raise by 25 basis points. I would not be surprised if we see a 50-bp rate rise from the Bank of England tomorrow." Other analysts said delivering a larger rate rise on Thursday risked further undermining the BoE's messaging. The 8-1 ruling, written by liberal Justice Elena Kagan, upheld a lower court's decision to allow the Justice Department to toss a lawsuit against a UnitedHealth Group Inc (UNH.N) unit by a former employee named Jesse Polansky who accused it of wrongdoing. Polansky had sought to bar the department from dismissing whistleblower lawsuits filed under the False Claims Act in instances in which the government initially declined to exercise its right to take over the cases. Whistleblower cases brought under the False Claims Act resulted in $48.2 billion in recoveries from 1987 to 2021, according to Justice Department data. The Justice Department sought dismissal of Polansky's lawsuit in 2019, citing concerns including the "tremendous" burden of requests for the government to produce documents. June 16 (Reuters) - The Bank of England is facing a stormy gilts market while Turkey's new governor is expected to ramp up rates sharply at central bank meetings in the week to come. Markets show traders are placing an almost one-in-five chance the BoE will raise rates by half a point next week, up from near zero at the start of June. Reuters Graphics2/ECONOMIC CHECK UPA raft of decidedly hawkish noises from big central banks - including the Fed - has once again raised questions about how much central bank tightening is accelerating a global slowdown. U.S. manufacturing contracted for a seventh straight month, as new orders continued to plummet amid higher interest rates. May's blockbuster employment report could also provide more leeway for the RBA to tighten rates further.
