Any nation (including the United States) would react if attacked by a neighboring entity, especially one aiming to destroy it. In attacking Gaza, however, Israel most likely will lose in the American and world court of public opinion — and ultimately could lose United States backing, a disaster for Israel. The substantial increase in antisemitic acts being committed in the United States and other countries contributes to this worrisome dynamic. I care about the innocent lives being lost on both sides. The road to their salvation lies not with reproof of Israel; Israel’s first responsibility is to her citizens.

Despite the early exit of starter Max Scherzer, the Rangers grabbed a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven series. Scherzer, facing his former team, had been struck by a ball hit up the middle by the Diamondbacks' Alek Thomas in the second inning. Jon Gray, who had been considered by Rangers manager Bruce Bochy to start Game 4, entered Game 3 in relief and earned the win. The Diamondbacks had the first real scoring opportunity of the game in the bottom of the second inning, when Christian Walker led off with a double. Jose Leclerc pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning to earn his fourth save of the postseason for the Rangers, who finished with five hits.

There was Chase Elliott, one of his best friends, who won the 2020 Cup title and is NASCAR’s five-time reigning most popular driver. It's one, he argues, where finally finding agreement on a long-sought two-state solution to the Israel-Palestinian conflict should be a priority. The White House says Biden conveyed the same message directly to Netanyahu during a telephone call this past week. “It also means that when this crisis is over, there has to be a vision of what comes next, and in our view it has to be a two-state solution,” Biden said. The D-backs and Texas Rangers have been great with the leather all season long. So far in the World Series, that trend is continuing. The D-backs and Rangers combined for zero errors over the first two games of the Fall Classic, which is the first time that's happened since 2018. Needing 19 runs off Mitchell Starc's final over, New Zealand milked 13 runs off the first four legitimate deliveries to keep the heat on Australia. "That was awesome," Australia captain Pat Cummins said after their fourth win in six matches. Glenn Phillips broke the burgeoning stand by taking a return catch to dismiss Warner, but Head raced to a 59-ball century. New Zealand were uncharacteristically sloppy in the field, dropping five catches, with Head the beneficiary on two occasions. That left Ferguson with the job of hitting the final delivery for six, but he drilled it straight to the cover fielder instead.

Opinion | A Plan to Defeat Hamas and Avoid a Bloodbath

Hamas’s master plan, as Bennett sees it, is roughly as follows: Provoke, via its gruesome massacres on Oct. 7, a massive Israeli ground invasion. Already, nearly 800,000 Gazans have fled from north to south, despite efforts by Hamas to keep them in place. “They’re asking for fuel not for their citizens but for their tunnels,” which are used exclusively by Hamas fighters and their allies. “I don’t want to get into a Viet Cong-type war of tunnels,” Bennett says. But the question isn’t whether Bennett’s plan is perfect or if there are gaps to fill.

New York CNN —Best Buy is recalling nearly a million pressure cookers because they pose burn risks. About 930,000 Insignia Multi-Function pressure cookers sold between October 2017 and June 2023 have inaccurate volume markings, meaning that some users may fill them beyond their intended capacity, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission said in a post Thursday. In the United States, Best Buy has received 17 complaints of burn injuries from these appliances, some of which were second-degree and other severe burns, according to the CPSC. “Nothing is more important to us than our customers’ safety,” Best Buy told CNN in a statement. Affected customer should contact Best Buy for a free replacement of the inner pot, as well as a new valve that signals when the pot is locked and pressurized.

NEW YORK (AP) — Best Buy is recalling nearly 1 million pressure cookers and separate inner pots due to a defect that can cause hot foods to spew out, posing burn hazards. The recalled pressure cookers, sold under the brand Insignia, have incorrect volume markings on their inner pots that can cause consumers to overfill them. To date, Best Buy has received 31 incident reports of the cookers' contents being expelled under pressure, including 17 reports of burn injuries — some of which were second-degree and severe burns. Consumers can identify the recalled pressure cookers and inner pots, with six- and eight-quart capacity, by their model numbers. Best Buy, which is based in Richfield, Minnesota, will not provide refunds or replacements for pressure cookers returned in stores, according to a notice on the company's website.

NEW YORK (AP) — FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried testified at his New York trial on Friday, denying that he defrauded anyone but acknowledging that the innovative business he had hoped would move the cryptocurrency ecosystem forward ended up hurting customers instead. “It turned out basically the opposite of that,” and a lot of customers and others got hurt, Bankman-Fried said. After the jury was sent home Thursday, Bankman-Fried testified in front of the judge about his communications with lawyers as he built his cryptocurrency empire. The executives testified that Bankman-Fried directed them to spend billions of dollars taken from the accounts of FTX customers and funneled through Alameda Research, a hedge fund he started in 2017, two years before he created the FTX cryptocurrency exchange. ___For more AP coverage of Sam Bankman-Fried and FTX: https://apnews.com/hub/sam-bankman-fried

Lab models of human embryos raise hopes and concerns
  + stars: | 2023-10-26 | by ( Katie Hunt | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +14 min
From the moment sperm fuses with an egg, human embryo development involves a string of complex and little understood processes. What happens during human embryo development, particularly in the crucial first month, remains largely unknown. However, 14 days is an important milestone because it is when permitted lab research on cultured human embryos routinely ends. He said, in the future, it might be possible to go as far as 40 days with human embryo models. Some in the field envision a “tipping point” wherein human embryo models might be afforded some protection like those surrounding human embryos, as scientific advances diminish the differences between the embryo models and their real-life counterparts.

“Five Nights at Freddy’s” wants to do for animatronic arcade characters what “It” did for clowns. Fleshing that out, the movie begins by quickly indicating why Freddy’s might need a new employee, and why Mike desperately needs a new job. "Five Nights at Freddy's" turns the game into a horror movie. Even so, the net result is another slice of horror that at best feels a little half-baked. “Five Nights at Freddy’s” premieres October 27 in US theaters and on Peacock.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Trea Turner had the moment that could have pushed the Phillies toward the World Series waiting for him. Harper, though, lined a 2-1 fastball to center to end the scoring threat, the inning — and Philadelphia's last, best chance to return to the World Series. The Diamondbacks used a walk-off Game 3 single and a tying two-run homer late in a Game 4 win that wiped out an 0-2 NLCS hole. Castellanos struck out — one of 11 in the NLCS — and, after a walk to Brandon Marsh, Thomson let the light-hitting Rojas take his cuts. The Phillies have not won a World Series since 2008.

Some hospitality businesses are becoming more inclusive with accessible tech for disabled travelers. Digital and physical tech has helped improve accessible travel experiences, but more can be done. Lawrence Sumulong/Lincoln CenterImproving accessible tech for the future of travelThe hospitality industry has a long way to go when it comes to accessibility. Two of the biggest issues with increasing accessible tech in this field are documentation of its benefits and the price of acquiring and integrating the tech. Many hotels and destinations either have trouble notating, or simply do not document, how much revenue they've made because of the accessible tech and services they provide.

On Tuesday night, the Diamondbacks won their ninth game of October -- and became one of the most unlikely World Series teams of all-time. The Diamondbacks, who overcame two-games-to-none and three-games-to-two deficits in the NLCS, will visit the American League champion Texas Rangers in Game 1 of the World Series on Friday night. The Phillies, with five players on $100 million deals on their roster, fell one win shy of their second straight NL pennant. The Phillies scored 15 runs in the final five games.

Children need to do more physical and practical work at school, and schools need to integrate more movement into students’ routines. Attending Back to School Night at my son’s middle school, I was saddened to see that instruction is done mostly via large screens and that the students have no recess. My grandchildren would love the opportunity to experience the life skills that I was lucky enough to enjoy. And of course she taught sewing and cooking. Today’s students could surely benefit by learning practical life skills like home ec and shop.
