The Teamsters on Wednesday declined to endorse a candidate for president, the first time in decades that the union hasn't backed a candidate in the presidential election. It found that almost 60% of rank-and-file union members preferred to endorse Trump, while 34% backed Harris, according to an electronic member poll. The law forced union workers to accept a union contract that had been brokered by the Biden administration. The union endorsed Biden in 2020. The AFL-CIO, which represents dozens of unions and millions of workers, and the United Auto Workers union have each endorsed Harris.

“There’s no one that can organize quite like labor,” Harris campaign manager Julie Chavez Rodriguez said. Andy Beshear signed an executive order Wednesday banning the scientifically discredited practice of so-called conversion therapy on minors in the state. “Conversion therapy has no basis in medicine or science, and it can cause significant long-term harm to our kids, including increased rates of suicide and depression. The same survey — which the governor's office cited in its statement — found that 54% of the LGBTQ youths who attempted suicide in the year prior were threatened with or subjected to conversion therapy. Advocates from The Trevor Project praised the governor's signing of the measure. Beshear's executive order comes amid the introduction of a historic number of anti-LGBTQ bills in state legislatures across the country this year.

Follow her on Instagram, Facebook and X.CNN —It’s a familiar struggle in many households: trying to pry kids’ phones away before bedtime. But the research indicates that kids using their phones once they are under the covers is a bad idea. Using phones in interactive ways under the covers — for things such as gaming and multitasking — was worse for kids’ sleep than using it more passively, for things such as watching movies. Instead, parents might consider taking kids’ phones away before bed and returning them in the morning. This new research is a reminder that there are commonsense ways to help kids avoid the major dangers of using their phones.

Ben Higgins tried to parlay his Bachelor success into a political career, but the campaign didn't last long. The focus on Bachelor Nation also makes sense given the franchise's viewership is dominated by one of the most crucial swing votes of recent elections: white women. In the past two presidential elections, white women were the most closely split demographic subgroup tracked by major exit polls. In 2016, Donald Trump won over 52% of white women against Hillary Clinton's 43%, exit polls found, while Trump bested Joe Biden in 2020 among white women 55% to 44%. The overlap between the swingiest demographic and the "Bachelor" audience suggests Bachelor Nation has value to those who seek to lead our nation.

CNN —Following the MIND diet for 10 years produced a small but significant decrease in the risk of developing thinking, concentration and memory problems, a new study found. The MIND diet was specifically designed to combat cognitive decline, said lead study author Dr. Russell Sawyer, an assistant professor of clinical neurology and rehabilitation medicine at the University of Cincinnati Gardner Neuroscience Institute. People who followed the MIND diet more closely were 4% less likely to develop memory and thinking problems than those who did not adhere to the diet, the study found. “The benefits of the MIND diet may have a differential impact in women and Blacks and this is an area for future research.”Leafy green vegetables, berries, whole grains, seeds, and a bit of fish and poultry are staples of the MIND diet. jenifoto/iStockphoto/Getty ImagesMore research neededA 2023 randomized controlled clinical trial found the MIND diet no better than the control diet in reducing signs of cognitive decline in the brain.

Oil prices steady, with investors focusing on Fed decision
  + stars: | 2024-09-18 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
Oil prices steadied on Wednesday, after rising in the previous two sessions, as investors await the U.S. Federal Reserve's anticipated interest rate cut, with the potential for more violence in the Middle East supporting the market. "Markets have calmed down as concerns over hurricane damage and escalating tensions in the Middle East have been factored in," said Mitsuru Muraishi, an analyst at Fujitomi Securities. "Now, investors are focusing on the Fed's rate cuts which could revitalize U.S. fuel demand and weaken the dollar," he said, predicting that oil prices are likely to maintain a bullish tone after Brent hit its lowest since 2021 last week. Traders kept bets the Fed will start an expected series of interest rate cuts with a half-percentage-point move downward on Wednesday, an expectation that may itself put pressure on central bankers to deliver just that. Oil stockpiles rose by 1.96 million barrels in the week ended Sept. 13, according to market sources citing the API figures, but gasoline and distillate stocks both rose by about 2.3 million barrels.

A view of the Dali cargo vessel which crashed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge causing it to collapse in Baltimore, Maryland, U.S., March 26, 2024. The U.S. Justice Department on Wednesday sued the owner and manager of the cargo ship that caused the Baltimore bridge collapse, seeking to recover more than $100 million that the government spent to clear the underwater debris and reopen the city's port. The collapse snarled commercial shipping traffic through the Port of Baltimore for months before the channel was fully opened in June. The case was filed against Dali owner Grace Ocean Private Ltd. and manager Synergy Marine Group, both of Singapore. The companies filed a court petition days after the collapse seeking to limit their legal liability in what could become the most expensive marine casualty case in history.

One, he told BI, "is training Taiwanese forces in reconnaissance and perhaps direct attack, focusing on missions that might be required to defeat a Chinese invasion." U.S. crude oil fell Wednesday ahead of the Federal Reserve's pivotal decision on interest rates later this afternoon. The oil market has been rattled this month by worries about a growing imbalance between supply and demand. Bulls are hoping that a decision by the Fed to cut interest rates for the first time in years could put a bid into the market. Andy Lipow, president of Lipow Oil Associates, said a 25 basis point cut is probably already priced into the oil market. CNN —The International Brotherhood of Teamsters declined to endorse a presidential candidate on Wednesday after releasing internal polling that showed a majority of its members supported former President Donald Trump over Vice President Kamala Harris. The Trump campaign highlighted that support from “rank-and-file” Teamsters members following the union’s announcement that it would not be endorsing. CNN previously reported that rank-and-file union membership had large pockets of Trump support, even as major labor leaders endorsed Harris. That survey also included Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who garnered about 6% of members’ support. While union members are thought of as a traditionally Democratic voting bloc, Trump has been working to make inroads among rank-and-file members.

It's the first time the Federal Reserve has cut rates since March 2020. The unemployment rate also ticked down in August, giving the Fed the data it needed to cut rates. AdvertisementAccording to CME FedWatch, which estimates interest-rate changes based on market predictions, a rate cut was all but certain; the question was how big of a cut the Fed would implement. Additionally, some economists and Democratic lawmakers had for months been calling for a rate cut of at least 50 basis points. A majority of cervical cancers, as well as some genital and oral cancers, are caused by a virus. And certain chronic viral infections can lead to liver cancer. Infections like these account for an estimated 13 percent of all cancer cases globally, according to a new report published Wednesday by the American Association for Cancer Research. Hezbollah hand-held radios detonate across Lebanon, sources say

The hand-held radios were purchased by Hezbollah five months ago, around the same time that the pagers were bought, said a security source. The two sides have been engaged in cross-border warfare since the Gaza conflict erupted last October, fuelling fears of a wider Middle East conflict that could drag in the United States and Iran. But given the scale, the impact on families, on civilians, there will be pressure for a stronger response," said Mohanad Hage Ali of the Carnegie Middle East Center. One Hezbollah official said the detonation was the group's "biggest security breach" in its history. It followed a series of assassinations of Hezbollah and Hamas commanders and leaders blamed on Israel since the start of the Gaza war.
