That happened Sunday when Trump posted on social media, in capital letters, that Powell “was not my attorney, and never was." Smith's indictment notes Trump privately told others that he thought her election fraud ideas sounded “crazy." Campaigning in New Hampshire on Monday, Trump appeared to refer to Powell and Cheesbro as “good people” and said prosecutors worked to “hound” and “scare” them. Steve Sadow, Trump's lead attorney in the Georgia case, expressed confidence that Powell’s plea wouldn’t hurt Trump, saying last week that any truthful testimony offered would be "favorable to my overall defense strategy." The Georgia indictment accuses Powell in a plot to illegally access a county's voting equipment.

The uprising that began nearly three weeks ago with the toppling of Speaker Kevin McCarthy has now weakened three of the most powerful figures in the House GOP. Twisting colored squares together in the right order seems simple by comparison with attempts to unite a House Republican conference unable to comprehend how clownish it looks. “We need (a speaker) because the House can’t do anything without a speaker,” Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky said on CBS’ “Face the Nation” Sunday. “This is probably one of the most embarrassing things I’ve seen because if we don’t have a speaker of the House, we can’t govern. “This is embarrassing for the Republican Party.

Tuesday marks three full weeks without a House speaker and 24 days until the government runs out of money, to say nothing of aid packages many lawmakers want for Israel and Ukraine. Most Republicans voted for all three men as speaker, but the outside edges of the party were too big to get a majority. Only two of the current speaker candidates supported the 2020 election results: Emmer and Scott. Four of the current speaker candidates voted no, including Sessions. But Trump’s power within the House GOP is limited.

Interim House Speaker Patrick McHenry of North Carolina said he wants the nominee to face a House vote as soon as Tuesday. His failure came after the party's original nominee, House Majority Leader Steve Scalise of Louisiana, bowed out of the race because he could not secure enough GOP votes. "Other than that I haven't seen anyone that can guarantee it," Trump told reporters. If Jesus came down and said, 'I want to be Speaker,' he would do it," Trump told reporters in New Hampshire. House Majority Whip Tom Emmer is considered the leading candidate, but he has a complicated relationship with Trump. Trump's confidence in Christ belies some House Republicans who have lamented that if Jesus were to return, even he would struggle to unite their fractious group. Jesus is far from the only hypothetical religious figure that has been offered a lament to House Republicans' struggles.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Day 20 without a House speaker, and Republicans found themselves starting over on Monday — bumbling ahead with few ideas about who will lead, what they are fighting over and when they will get Congress working again. Nine lower-level Republican lawmakers are now running to be speaker, leader of the House and second in line to the presidency — none with any clear shot for the gavel. McCarthy himself calls the whole spectacle “embarrassing” for the House Republicans whose majority is being wasted away and for the U.S. government that cannot fully function. 2 House Republican Steve Scalise and prominent conservative Jim Jordan. The task of choosing a new Republican nominee for the job of House speaker begins again on Monday at 6:30 p.m. EST (2230 GMT), when nine declared candidates, including No. 3 House Republican Tom Emmer, will appear at a closed-door candidate forum. McCarthy has endorsed Emmer, stressing his experience in working to marshal party votes on major legislation since January, when Republicans became the majority party in the House. House Republicans have been embroiled in chaos all year.

CNN —As the House enters its third week without a speaker, nearly a dozen Republicans are vying to earn the support of their conference to wield the gavel, throwing the chamber into even more uncertainty. The chamber has been without a speaker since House Republicans ousted Rep. Kevin McCarthy earlier this month. Nine House Republicans are running for the position, announced House GOP conference chair Rep. Elise Stefanik, including GOP Whip Tom Emmer, who is endorsed by McCarthy. Emmer has moved to lock in support across the ideological and geographic spectrum in the conference, giving him what many House Republicans believe is an advantage, according to GOP sources. REUTERS/Blair Gable/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsOTTAWA, Oct 23 (Reuters) - The Bank of Canada (BoC) will leave interest rates on hold on Wednesday as the economy stalls, analysts said, though many see the central bank warning that future hikes are still possible with inflation hovering well above its 2% target. Weak growth and a modest easing of inflation "should keep the Bank of Canada on hold," he said. Earlier this month, BoC Governor Tiff Macklem said the economy was not heading for a "serious recession". Macklem "will need to sound sufficiently hawkish to retain current market pricing, which more or less has the Bank of Canada holding rates steady until 2025."

Up until a few weeks ago, no member of the House Freedom Caucus had ever gotten close to becoming House speaker. After Mr. Scalise withdrew, Mr. Jordan won 124 votes in the Republican House conference vote against Austin Scott, enough to earn his party’s nomination for speaker. In the public vote on the House floor, Mr. Jordan won 200 votes on the first ballot for speaker. That’s less than 40 percent of House Republicans. None of these votes offer a perfect measure of House Republicans.

GOP presidential candidate Chris Christie has a basic message for House Republicans: Get a speaker. AdvertisementAdvertisementNearly three weeks after Rep. Kevin McCarthy of California was ousted as House speaker, House Republicans have been unable to coalesce around a successor. For GOP presidential candidate Chris Christie, he's already seen enough. Once a Trump ally, Christie in recent years has become a major critic of the former president, which has both elevated his candidacy and turned off sizable numbers of GOP voters. However, of all of the early-voting states, Christie is best positioned in New Hampshire, where he's largely focused his campaign.

CNN —The high-stakes race for House speaker enters a new phase this week, with a slate of new candidates vying for the gavel following Rep. Jim Jordan’s exit from the race. The former National Republican Congressional Committee chairman was first elected to Congress in 2014 and became majority whip earlier this year. Bergman is a member of the House Armed Services Committee where he chairs the Intelligence and Special Operations Subcommittee. Scott, who represents Georgia’s 8th Congressional District, serves on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, the House Armed Services Committee and the House Agriculture Committee. Johnson sits on the House Judiciary Committee, Select Committee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government and on the House Armed Services Committee.

The instigator, Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz , thinks a better Speaker would be Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan. But on Friday Mr. Jordan lost another floor vote, making it three this week, first with 20 defections, then 22, and finally 25. Some of the Jordan dissenters are still angry about the shabby treatment of Mr. McCarthy and the conference’s No. Others seem to believe Mr. Jordan is too much of a firebrand to serve as the party’s frontman. Mr. Jordan lost ground despite some notable attempts at sausage-making.

And Kinzinger also blasted McCarthy for what he said was the California Republican's capitulation to the Trump wing of the party. Rep. Matt Gaetz on Friday expressed dismay at Jim Jordan's removal as the GOP speaker nominee. "It's as swampy as swamp gets, and Jim Jordan deserved better than that," Gaetz told reporters. The decision sank the House chamber into further disarray, more than weeks after Rep. Kevin McCarthy of California was ousted as speaker. "It's as swampy as swamp gets, and Jim Jordan deserved better than that." Democrats could potentially be in the mix to back a particular GOP speaker nominee if some sort of legislative deals are made, but it is unclear what those terms would look like or if it would actually happen.

Representative Jim Jordan was brought down by the revolt of the rule followers. They believed that installing Mr. Jordan, a hard-right Ohioan and political brawler, would reward colleagues who had played dirty in unseating Speaker Kevin McCarthy and undermining the candidacy of Representative Steve Scalise of Louisiana. It particularly galled them that Mr. Scalise, the No. 2 Republican, defeated Mr. Jordan, the chairman of the Judiciary Committee, in the initial party vote to choose a replacement for Mr. McCarthy only to then watch Mr. Jordan’s allies immediately pivot to denying Mr. Scalise the speakership on the floor. The anti-Jordan lawmakers then found themselves under a withering social media attack from the right and confronting violent threats against them and their families for balking at voting for Mr. Jordan.

The pleas are a stark display of the reality that the Georgia case against Trump and his co-defendants is getting stronger. For two prominent Trump co-defendants – Sidney Powell and Kenneth Chesebro – the looming five-month trial, potentially resulting in a yearslong prison sentence, appears to have spurred them into flipping. Chesebro directly implicated Trump in a criminal conspiracy, and his plea establishes for the first time that the fake electors plot was illegal. Trump is the only person charged thus far in the federal case, but both Chesebro and Powell are unindicted co-conspirators. Sadow brushed off the threat of possible testimony from Chesebro and Powell at Trump’s eventual trial on the Georgia election subversion charges.

CNN —There is still no end in sight for the high-stakes speakership battle after House Republicans ousted Kevin McCarthy more than two weeks ago. Frustrations and divisions have only intensified within the conference as Republicans search for a way to resolve the impasse. House Republicans are expected to hold a candidate forum Monday evening and more candidates are likely to throw their names into the running before then. Then, in the aftermath of McCarthy’s ouster, House Majority Leader Steve Scalise’s speakership nomination met a swift downfall when the conference failed to come together on his bid. The Ohio Republican fared worse in the vote than he had in previous failed rounds.

Aside from McCarthy and Jordan, Republicans have also rejected their No. That plan would give more authority to Republican Representative Patrick McHenry, who is filling the speaker's chair on a temporary basis. He helped to engineer government shutdowns in 2013 and 2018 and helped to push Republican Speaker John Boehner into retirement in 2015. Jordan's vote total of 194 was less than McCarthy netted in 15 grueling rounds of voting in January. Jordan's Republican opponents declined to celebrate in the wake of his defeat.

Jim Jordan again failed to win the speakership during the third round of voting. There were 25 House Republicans who voted for someone other than Jordan – a higher number of GOP votes against him than in the first two failed votes in a sign that opposition to his bid is growing. Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio was removed as GOP nominee for speaker in a secret ballot after he lost his third bid on Friday. Rep. Kevin McCarthy, the previous speaker, was ousted more than two weeks ago. Jim Jordan withdrew his bid to become House speaker after the fiery conservative lost both a public and private vote Friday, sending divided House Republicans back to the starting line in their weekslong quest to elect a leader and pass urgent legislation. Jordan’s defeat marked the latest fallout from the ouster earlier this month of Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R., Calif.), with House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R., La.) and now Jordan winning the party’s nod only to fall short of the gavel because of internal GOP opposition.

It comes one day after former Trump campaign lawyer Sidney Powell also pleaded guilty and agreed to cooperate with prosecutors. Fulton County prosecutors recommended that he serve 5 years of probation and pay $5,000 in restitution, and Fulton County Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee imposed that sentence at Friday’s hearing. Three defendants have now pleaded guilty in the sprawling racketeering case: Chesebro, Powell and Georgia-based bail bondsman Scott Hall. Powell and Hall both admitted their roles in the January 2021 breach of election systems in rural Coffee County, Georgia. At a hearing earlier this week, Fulton County prosecutors and attorneys for Chesebro haggled over how many politically charged questions should be included.

It’s no longer “higher for longer,” said Steve Sosnick, chief strategist at Interactive Brokers, it’s just “high for long.”What’s happening: 10-year Treasury yields are flirting with 5% for the first time since 2007, before the global financial crisis. It also means more expensive mortgage rates. Mortgage rates tend to track the yield on 10-year US Treasuries. When Treasury yields go up, so do mortgage rates; when they go down, mortgage rates tend to follow. Fed officials, including Powell, have indicated that rates could be high enough to help lower inflation towards their target goal of 2%.

Rep. Jim Jordan was again decisively defeated in his bid to become speaker on Friday, marking his third failed ballot this week and by the largest margin yet as his support continues to erode. Yet it remained unclear whether the divisive lawmaker would yield in his strong-armed bid for leadership amid a growing urgency for House Republicans to resolve the crisis they created. Twenty-five House Republicans voted against the Ohio Republican, growing by three votes since Wednesday and two in the first vote a day prior, as things are trending in the wrong direction for Jordan. Unlike McCarthy, Jordan has the backing of most House conservatives. Still, Jordan faces opposition from a number of sides – from moderates, from appropriators and from McCarthy and Majority Leader Steve Scalise allies, among others.

A former prosecutor saidTrump should be worried about his ex-attorneys' plea deals in Georgia. Sidney Powell and Kenneth Chesebro struck deals in the Georgia 2020 election interference case. He emphasized that it's "real bad with a capital B" for Trump. Additionally, Bederow said, the plea deals will likely bolster the public's perception in the legitimacy of the charges and could prompt other co-defendants in the case to turn on Trump. Trump's team downplayed the significance of the plea deals in a statement.
