Scientists are very confident that climate change is increasing rainfall rates – how hard the rain is falling – and the amount of rain a storm can produce. Floodwaters have washed out roads and several state road closures are in effect. A team was heading out to survey the damage, which included “quite a bit” of structural and road damage, National Weather Service meteorologist Seth Kutikoff told the Associated Press. Northeast Vermont and other portions of the state are also still recovering from more extensive flooding just over a year ago. Last year’s flooding caused numerous road and bridge washouts, land and mudslides resulting in significant property damage and loss.

It is this lack of exploration and appreciation — particularly of the layer of cold, dark water that begins where light fades, known as the ocean’s twilight zone — that has led us to a very precarious place. Just as we are learning to appreciate the extraordinary service of creatures in the twilight zone, companies that manufacture feed for industrial fish farms, fertilizer and omega-3 supplements are preparing to exploit it. Right now nations are considering authorizing commercial fishing fleets to grind life in the twilight zone into fish meal, fertilizer and plant food. Before they move forward with these plans, it would be wise to hit pause so we can understand how that decision will affect our planet.

Trees are sucking up just as much, if not more, methane than soil does — the only other known natural sink on Earth. "We've been undervaluing trees for their climate benefits," Vincent Gauci, a professor at the University of Birmingham and the lead author of the study, told Business Insider. Both natural and human-made methane emissions from wetlands, cows, landfills, and burning fossil fuels are on the rise. In a 2017 study, they found that trees in Amazon floodplains emitted more methane than they absorbed. Satellites detect lower methane emissions than what scientists have found on the ground, implying that such "bottom-up" studies either overestimated methane emissions or missed a sink.

Although researchers weren’t able to explain the mechanism by which hens blush in this study, they concluded that the cheeks and ear lobes were more revealing of the birds’ emotions than their comb or wattles. Building on the results of this study, Bertin hopes to investigate whether these displays of emotion are linked to the hens’ social interactions, as well the implications for animal welfare.
