Read previewThe Republican Party has politicized critical US aid to Ukraine, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says the radical rhetoric terrifies his people. "There are definitely some voices, radical voices from the Republican party, and they are straining Ukrainian society," Zelenskyy said during a group interview at Davos on Tuesday with outlets including Business Insider. Advertisement"Some radical voices are just stressing us out. AdvertisementThat type of inflammatory rhetoric, along with the current roadblock in Congress, has put Ukraine on edge. Out in the open, though, the rhetoric remains, and aid to Ukraine is still in danger.

Without continued Western support for Ukraine's war efforts, the consequences could be dire, according to Ukrainian President Zelenskyy, who warned of a "big crisis" not just for Ukraine but for other countries as well. Zelenskyy has been warning about that worst case scenario outcome for months, as have experts and top war watchers. The roughly $111 billion package, which includes aid to Ukraine and Israel, has been held up by Republicans since October 2023. Should US aid to Ukraine dry up, it'll be a test of how Ukraine's European allies can fill in the gaps. Reversal of the so-called Chevron deference approach was a priority for the judicial selection team that served Trump – on par with some right-wing activists’ quest for reversal of constitutional abortion rights. The reconstituted Supreme Court delivered on that agenda item in 2022 when it overturned Roe v. Wade. Former White House counsel Don McGahn, who controlled Trump’s judicial selections, regularly touted the administration’s anti-regulation agenda. He was especially drawn to the first two Trump appointees, Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh, for their records in that regard. In his written brief and during arguments, Martinez invoked an adage of Chief Justice Roberts from his 2005 confirmation hearings, that judges serve as umpires, just calling balls and strikes.

Why the controversial mullet is having a moment

Long hair, don’t careThe “modern day” mullet largely originates from David Bowie’s genre-defining and gender-norm defying persona, Ziggy Stardust, Glasscock said. “People from the Continental Congress wore what we would read as a full metal, 1992 mullet,” said Glasscock. (“Hockey hair” was, meanwhile, a popular synonym for mullet at the time, given its prominence among players and fans.) Devin Yalkin/Courtesy A24While playing Kerry Von Erich in “The Iron Claw,” White also wore his dynamic, sweeping mullet off-set — but not entirely by choice. “I was like, ‘I’m sorry, here’s a ponytail holder.”But that dedication may have played an integral part in a mullet revival kicking off 2024.

Her memoir was, appropriately, entitled: “Are You Tough Enough?”Her son Neil Gorsuch, a Supreme Court justice since 2017, has shown his own brand of defiance and anti-regulatory fervor. In recent years, Justice Gorsuch has voted against regulations that protect the environment, student-debt forgiveness and Covid-19 precautions. He has led calls on the court for reversal of a 1984 Supreme Court decision that gives federal agencies considerable regulatory latitude and that, coincidentally traces to his mother’s tenure. The lawyers who will argue on behalf of the challengers are seasoned appellate advocates who once served as Supreme Court law clerks, as did Solicitor General Prelogar. That argument has prevailed in courts for decades, but the Supreme Court has signaled that it is ready for a new era.

Fulton County DA Fani Willis was accused of having an "improper" relationship with a prosecutor. Willis appointed the prosecutor, Nathan Wade, to oversee the RICO case against Trump. The motion seeks to dismiss the indictment and disqualify Willis and Wade and their offices from further prosecuting the case. Willis said she hired three special prosecutors for the election case: a white man, a white woman, and a Black man. If Willis financially benefited from her relationship with Wade, that may be an ethics violation," he said.

The Nicaraguan authorities said on Sunday that they had released 19 clergymen who had been jailed and handed them over to the Vatican, the latest development in the autocratic government’s longstanding persecution of the Roman Catholic Church. Among those set free was Bishop Rolando Álvarez, one of the most prominent critics of the government left in Nicaragua, who had been convicted of treason and sentenced to 26 years in prison last February. Another bishop, Isidoro Mora, 15 priests and two seminarians were also released. Silvio Báez, a Nicaraguan bishop in exile in the United States, celebrated the news in a Sunday Mass in Miami on Sunday, saying that “the criminal Sandinista dictatorship” of President Daniel Ortega “has not been able to overcome the power of God.”The release came after Pope Francis drew attention to the attacks on the church in his New Year’s Day address, telling the faithful gathered in St. Peter’s Square that he was “following with concern what is happening in Nicaragua, where bishops and priests have been deprived of their freedom.”

ATLANTA (AP) — Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis on Sunday defended the qualifications of a special prosecutor she hired for her case against Donald Trump and others over efforts to overturn the 2020 election in Georgia after a defense lawyer accused Willis of professional impropriety. At the church, Willis did not address the allegations of an improper relationship. They are paid the same hourly rate and no one has questioned the qualifications of the two white lawyers, she said. Merchant's filing offered no proof of the alleged relationship or trips that she said that Willis and Wade had taken together. Pete Skandalakis, a former district attorney who is executive director of the Prosecuting Attorneys’ Council, said district attorneys do not have to seek permission before hiring a special prosecutor.

Hundreds of props used in the show "Succession" have been auctioned off. AdvertisementSomeday soon, someone will be walking down the street proudly carrying a ludicrously capacious bag, bought for a ludicrously capacious price. The voluminous Burberry tote is one of the most famous props used on "Succession," the famed HBO saga of the Roy family dynasty, and it sold at auction Saturday for $18,750. It often parodied the lives of the uber-wealthy, with Logan Roy being a nod to the former Chairman of Fox News, Rupert Murdoch. After all, there's no award for "best props" at awards shows like there is for costumes, notes "Succession" prop master Monica Jacobs, who joined the show after the pilot episode.

Robots of all kinds caused a stir on the show floor this week at the annual CES technology trade show in Las Vegas. The types of casino union jobs at risk could look drastically different five years from now, for example, when the Culinary Union's contract ends. We are filling the need in the market and we are bringing specialty coffee to more places.”But Werner said AI poses a real threat to casino union jobs that don’t require face-to-face interaction with customers — housekeeping, food preparation and cooks, for example. That's especially true for a people-pleasing tourist destination like the Las Vegas Strip, where customers expect top-notch service and experiences, including the latest trends in technology. That makes Las Vegas “a good place to test these things and see how customers react to it," he said.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Archeologists have uncovered a cluster of lost cities in the Amazon rainforest that was home to at least 10,000 farmers around 2,000 years ago. A series of earthen mounds and buried roads in Ecuador was first noticed more than two decades ago by archaeologist Stéphen Rostain. “It was a lost valley of cities," said Rostain, who directs investigations at France’s National Center for Scientific Research. The largest roads were 33 feet (10 meters) wide and stretched for 6 to 12 miles (10 to 20 kilometers). “There’s always been an incredible diversity of people and settlements in the Amazon, not only one way to live,” said Rostain.

Similar legal challenges have been filed in the five remaining states: California, Connecticut, Maine, New York and West Virginia. A few childhood vaccines, including those that protect against chickenpox and rubella, were developed with cells obtained from aborted fetuses in the early 1960s. The legal push comes as childhood vaccine exemptions have reached a new high in the United States, according to a report released last month by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Idaho had the highest rate of exemptions, at 12.1 percent, while West Virginia had the lowest, at less than one-tenth of 1 percent. A broad majority of Americans continue to believe in the value of childhood vaccines.
