Morning Bid: China surprise lifts mood before US payrolls
  + stars: | 2023-09-01 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +3 min
Meanwhile, a pleasant surprise emerged from China, where a private-sector survey showed factory activity in the world's second-largest economy ticked back into expansive territory. It's a little too early to celebrate a major shift in recent trends, though, with the property sector and weak household consumption still weighing heavily. China's stock market shook off its recent gloom in the Asian morning, with the blue-chip index's (.CSI300) real estate (.CSI000) and financial (.CSIFN) sub-indexes leading the charge. The parade of PMI data marches on, with surveys due from a host of countries in the euro bloc on Friday. The euro zone final PMI will be in focus after the survey last month showed manufacturing activity slowing at the fastest pace since the start of the pandemic.

Shares of Disney dropped 2.65% to a three-year low while Charter lost 3.4%. Warner Brothers Discovery Inc (WBD.O) fell 10%, Fox Corp (FOXA.O) shed 6%, Paramount Global (PARA.O) dropped 8%, while Comcast Corp (CMCSA.O), the largest U.S. cable provider, was down nearly 3%. Charter said Disney rejected its proposal for a new distribution deal that takes into account the rise of competing low-cost streaming services, which has fueled cord-cutting among its customers. The cable provider said it pays Disney $2.2 billion in annual programming costs, excluding advertising.

An explosion on a plane believed to be carrying the Russian mercenary leader Yevgeny V. Prigozhin likely brought down the aircraft on Wednesday, killing all the passengers aboard, according to U.S. and other Western officials citing preliminary intelligence. A definitive conclusion has not yet been reached, but a blast is the leading theory of what caused a private plane to crash in a field between Moscow and St. Petersburg. The explosion could have been caused by a bomb or other device planted on the aircraft, though other theories, like adulterated fuel, were also being explored, the officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the matter, said. U.S. officials sounded increasingly certain, both publicly and privately, that Mr. Prigozhin was dead, and that President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia had ordered the killing, intent on removing a figure who had led a short-lived mutiny in June that was seen as the gravest challenge to Mr. Putin’s rule in decades. Gen. Patrick Ryder, the Pentagon press secretary, said the initial U.S. assessment, based on a “variety of factors,” was that Mr. Prigozhin had likely been killed in the crash.

She Got Her Dream House With a Promise: No Renovation

If you don’t try, you’ll never know what’s possible. That’s the philosophy Tracy Crawford adopted when she set out to buy and renovate her dream home. For seven years, Ms. Crawford had lived in an adequate house in Pittsfield, Mass., with her husband, Craig Crawford, and children, Riley, now 18, and Maggie, 14. But whenever they drove into the city center, they passed a 1938 house that was impressively large — 5,500 square feet, it turned out — on a bucolic six-acre property with a barn. “I was always like, ‘Oh, there’s my dream house,’” said Ms. Crawford, 54, the owner of Evergreen Home Real Estate.
