CNN —Visitors to New York City’s famed Flatiron Building may have noticed the landmark’s lesser-known neighbor — a narrow high-rise that would be modest if not for its extravagant gold dome. Now, the 5,777-square-foot penthouse that occupies the shimmering dome (and the two-story octagonal cupola it crowns) is on sale for $25 million. The five-bedroom, five-bathroom property sits atop 170 Fifth Avenue, which was built in 1898 and predates the Flatiron Building by four years. The building has been standing four years longer than its famous neighbor, the Flatiron Building. Alexander Alland, Jr. /Corbis Historical/Getty ImagesHaving once contained various businesses, including a publishing house, 170 Fifth Avenue was converted into a condominium at the turn of the millennium.

"We are seeing [deflation] to some extent," said Stephen Brown, deputy chief North America economist at Capital Economics. Energy prices and electronicsGasoline prices are also "way down," Zandi said. Consumers "could get more relief there because global oil prices are soft," Zandi said. Food prices are also generally underpinned by their own unique supply-and-demand dynamics, economists said. Lower energy prices can also take pressure off food prices, as it costs less to transport and distribute food to grocery store shelves.

Fed’s Powell: Rate cuts are still underway

Powell said more rate cuts are likely underway because the economy’s current trends and dynamics are expected to remain in place, at least in the short run. “We are moving policy over time to a more neutral setting,” Powell said in prepared remarks for an event in Dallas. It’s also too soon for Fed officials to conclude that October data is indicative of any new trend. While additional hot inflation reports could be factored in to the Fed’s decisions, officials are also looking at the US labor market closely. There’s also been tension between Trump and Powell, whom the president-elect first nominated in 2017 to steer the central bank.

A man whose 2016 hack of Bitfinex drained nearly 120,000 bitcoin from that cryptocurrency exchange was sentenced Thursday to five years in prison for a money laundering scheme that he and his wife pulled off to hide the swiped crypto. The value of that bitcoin at the time of the Bitfinex cyberattack was just $70 million when it was stolen by Ilya Lichtenstein. Lichtenstein, 35, and his wife, Heather Rhiannon Morgan, pleaded guilty to money laundering conspiracy in federal court in Washington, D.C., in August 2023, about 18 months after their arrest. It was at that plea hearing that Lichtenstein first publicly admitted that he had been the hacker of Bitfinex. With credit for good behavior, which is standard in the federal penal system, Lichtenstein could be released from prison in less than two years.

First, let's recognize the strength of the uptrend in gold leading into November 2024. While the two trends were both higher in October, a post-election surge in the US Dollar appeared to signal the end of the golden era of gold in 2024. And while the long-term chart of gold remains in decent shape, the short-term reversal in recent weeks has pushed gold stocks down to key price support. Now the GDX is testing its 200-day moving average, which also represents a 50% retracement of the 2024 bull phase. In terms of a longer-term inflection point for gold, it's all about finding signs of accumulation.

Gold prices extended their decline to a near two-month low Thursday amid risk-on sentiment and as the dollar continues to strengthen following Donald Trump's election victory last week. He elaborated that gold prices are likely to trade lower as U.S. equities rally on prospects of lower tax and regulations. In spite of the slide in gold prices, market watchers are still optimistic on the fundamentals of the bullion. The underlying drivers of the gold market are still in place, Layton said. A mix of rising debt, geopolitical tensions and central bank demand are expected to support higher gold prices, said Canaccord Genuity.

"A Kamala presidency would have meant the same exact things for crypto and digital assets in four years' time as a Trump presidency," Brokate says. Part of crypto's upward price momentum stems from investor optimism in what a Republican-controlled government could mean for digital assets, Brokate says. But forward-looking investors say that the current market for crypto is barely scratching the surface of potential investor demand. That is, crypto advocates say, if the U.S. government provides a clearer regulatory framework for financial institutions to market and sell crypto and other digital assets to customers. Ideally, crypto enthusiasts say, the U.S. would eventually establish regulatory frameworks similar to the one that exists in Europe known as MiCA — Markets in Crypto Assets.

CNN —When Elisa Smithers was deployed to Iraq in 2005, there was a ban on women serving in ground combat operations. But she returned home to find she wasn’t offered the same support by the US Department of Veterans Affairs that male combat veterans were offered, Smithers said. Women account for roughly 17.5% of the Defense Department’s active-duty force, according to 2022 data from the agency. Hegseth has specifically criticized having women in roles where strength “is the differentiator,” he said on the podcast last week. She also worries any course reversal on women serving in combat will have a sweeping impact on women serving in other government jobs.
