But not all unionized workers have equal access to their employer’s DB plan. One sticking point in the UAW negotiations is to restore access to company pension plans that had been closed to anyone hired after the union accepted deep concessions in its 2007 contract. Why employers moved away from traditional pensionsMany employers started making the shift to 401(k) plans and other DC plans in the 1980s. The PBGC protects pension benefits and continues to pay retirees should their employer or its DB plan become insolvent. Retirement readiness at risk for millionsSimply having access to a workplace retirement plan isn’t enough to guarantee a secure retirement.

Decarbonisation in mining still a long way off

Engineering student Mark Peirce from the School of Mines poses for a portrait in the college's experimental mine in Idaho Springs, Colorado, U.S., December 9, 2021. As metals are used across many different industries that serve customers across various geographies, it is difficult for mining companies to account for the whole supply chain. The International Council on Mining and Metals , whose members include around 25 mining companies, on Thursday published guidance for all mining companies on how to account and report their Scope 3 - or indirect - emissions "to try and answer the problem of patchy data to make companies report consistently," its CEO Rohitesh Dhawan said at the conference. Scope 1 refers to a company's direct emissions, Scope 2 to indirect emissions from purchased energy while Scope 3 refers to all other indirect emissions, for example from a company's third-party suppliers. Mining companies have set targets to decarbonise and mostly aim to reach net zero by 2040 and 2050, but some are struggling to keep up.

Last week, Ford said it had offered a 9% wage increase through 2027, much less than the 46% wage hike being sought by the union. Stellantis said Wednesday it intends to give the UAW a counter offer on the union's economic demands by the end of the week. The UAW declined to comment on its proposal it made to Ford. Ford said Wednesday it continues to negotiate with the UAW but declined to comment on the details of the talks. Ford said it would boost starting pay for temporary workers to $20 an hour, up 20%, and offer permanent employees $12,000 in cost-of-living adjustments over the contract.

DETROIT (AP) — The head of the United Auto Workers warned Wednesday that the union plans to go on strike against any Detroit automaker that hasn't reached a new agreement by the time contracts expire next week. “That’s the plan,” President Shawn Fain responded when asked if the union would strike any of the companies that haven’t reached a tentative deal by the time their national contracts end. In an interview with The Associated Press, Fain left open the possibility of avoiding a strike. He acknowledged, more explicitly than he has before, that the union will have to give up some of its demands to reach agreements. Last week, the union filed charges of unfair labor practices against Stellantis and GM, and it said Ford's economic offer fell far short of its demands.

Both GM and Stellantis denied the unfair labor charges. Fain said the Detroit automakers want the ability to close U.S. auto plants and move them to low-wage countries, adding that threats by the automakers to close U.S. plants are "economic terrorism." The current four-year labor agreements covering 146,000 workers at the Detroit Three automakers expire on Sept. 14. Stellantis said it was shocked by the UAW claims "that we have not bargained in good faith. DETROIT — United Auto Workers has filed unfair labor practice charges against automakers General Motors and Stellantis to the National Labor Relations Board for not bargaining with the union in good faith or a timely manner, UAW President Shawn Fain said Thursday night. The union did not file a complaint against Ford Motor , as Fain said the company responded to the UAW's demands with a counterproposal he heavily criticized. "GM and Stellantis' willful refusal to bargain in good faith is not only insulting and counterproductive, it's also illegal," Fain said during a Facebook Live. "That's why today, our union filed unfair labor practice charges, or ULPs, against both GM and Stellantis with the National Labor Relations Board." Regarding Ford's recent proposal, Fain called it "concessionary."

Nearly 40 U.S. states have legalized marijuana use in some form, but it remains completely illegal in some states and at the federal level. The scheduling recommendation for marijuana was provided to the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) on Tuesday as part of President Biden's directive to HHS, the spokesperson said. "As part of this process, HHS conducted a scientific and medical evaluation for consideration by DEA. DEA will now initiate its review," a DEA spokesperson said.

Since 2007, worldwide public debt has ballooned from 40% to 60% of GDP, on average, with debt-to-GDP ratios even higher in the advanced countries. That includes the United States, the world's biggest economy, where government debt is now more than double the nation's yearly economic output. Reuters GraphicsDespite mounting worries about the growth-crimping implications of high debt, "debt reduction, while desirable in principle, is unlikely in practice," Serkan Arslanalp, an economist at the International Monetary Fund, and Barry Eichengreen, an economics professor at the University of California, Berkeley, wrote in a paper. Inflation, unless it surprises to the upside over an extended period, does little to reduce debt ratios, and debt restructuring for developing countries has become more elusive as the pool of creditors has broadened, Arslanalp and Eichengreen wrote. "High public debts are here to stay," they wrote.

Aug 25 (Reuters) - The United Auto Workers (UAW) union on Friday said members voted overwhelmingly in favor of authorizing a strike at the Detroit Three automakers if agreement is not reached before the current four-year contract expires on Sept. 14. Fain reiterated that the union did not plan to extend the deadline to get a new labor contract. We have a lot of options that we are looking at but extension on the contract is not one of them." Fain said he expected the Detroit Three to come to the bargaining table next week with counter proposals to the UAW demands. Yao was unswayed and would prefer consumer vouchers, which some local governments in China have issued, but in amounts too small to matter at a macro level. Local governments, while cash poor, are asset rich. AEG estimates the total economic loss by calculating potential losses to UAW workers, the manufacturers and to the auto industry more broadly if the sides cannot reach tentative agreements before the current contracts expire. $825 millionThe UAW has more than $825 million in its strike fund, which it uses to pay eligible members who are on strike. The strike pay is $500 per week for each member – up from $275 in 2022. Assuming 150,000 or so eligible workers, that's all-in weekly strike pay of about $75 million. CNBC's Jim Cramer on Wednesday examined the ramifications a strike by the United Auto Workers union would have on the big three U.S. automakers. The union will vote on whether to strike next week, and if they decide to do so it could cost automakers billions. But Cramer said he doesn't think investors should rush to sell off their auto shares, saying he feels the strike is a one-time cost that these companies can bounce back from. Cramer noted that auto stocks are already down from their highs in a short period of time. Cramer also said he doubts the agreement UAW would eventually reach with automakers will be at the level of Fain's current demands.
