Clyde Taylor, a scholar who in the 1970s and ’80s played a leading role in identifying, defining and elevating Black cinema as an art form, died on Jan. 24 at his home in Los Angeles. His daughter, Rahdi Taylor, a filmmaker, said the cause was chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. As a young professor in the Los Angeles area in the late 1960s — first at California State University, Long Beach, and then at the University of California, Los Angeles — Dr. Taylor was at the epicenter of a push to bring the study of Black culture into academia. Black culture was not merely an appendage to white culture, he argued, but had its own logic, history and dynamics that grew out of the Black Power and Pan-African movements. And filmmaking, he said, was just as important to Black culture as literature and art.

But it also sets the stage for additional appeals from the Republican ex-president that could reach the U.S. Supreme Court and result in further delays. The judges gave Trump until February 12 to ask the Supreme Court to pause the ruling. The appeals court took center stage in the immunity dispute after the Supreme Court in December said it was at least temporarily staying out of it, rejecting a request from Smith's team to take up the matter quickly and issue a speedy ruling. But the court could yet still decide to act on a Trump team appeal, adding to the uncertainty of a trial date. The high court declined the request, leaving the matter with the appeals court.

Los Angeles Works to Build Its Dance Muscles

Los Angeles may not be thought of as a dance town, but it has a rich legacy. It was here, in 1915, that the modern dance pioneers Ruth St. Denis and her husband Ted Shawn, established the Denishawn school and company, shaping and showcasing the first generation of American modern dancers, including Martha Graham, Doris Humphrey and Charles Weidman. Lester Horton, one of the first choreographers to insist on a racially integrated company, established the Lester Horton Dance Theater here in 1946, a pioneering stage dedicated to modern dance. But for all the talent Los Angeles has attracted over the years, and its success in founding other performing arts institutions, the city has struggled to establish lasting dance companies able to attract and maintain audiences and patronage. It has also just entered an agreement with the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts in Beverly Hills, a larger theater, to perform there.

Gavin Newsom defended Taylor Swift after some Republicans made the 34-year-old singer their new political target. During an appearance on MSNBC's "The Sunday Show," Newsom was asked about conspiracy theories aimed at the star by right-wing Donald Trump supporters. She wants more people to vote," Newsom said." To be clear, Swift has not endorsed Biden for the 2024 election, though she threw her support behind the president in 2020. Sometimes a pine cone is just a pine cone. “Growing up, I had some challenges,” Ms. Oppenheimer said, referring to her prickly teenage past, “some struggles with managing my emotions.”But her grandmother, who died four years ago, was soft like the feather, and gave her unconditional love that reminded Ms. Oppenheimer how important it was to treat herself with “soothing tenderness,” especially when she became self-critical. Ms. Oppenheimer and her clinical supervisor, Heidi Schreiber-Pan, were visiting Talmar, a nonprofit farm that offers therapeutic programs and vocational training — a short drive from the busy road and nondescript strip malls near their office. At the farm, the only sounds were a burbling stream, trilling birds and several inches of snow crunching beneath their feet. It was the perfect location to teach Ms. Oppenheimer therapeutic techniques that make use of the natural world.

We here at New York Times Cooking love a good cry, whether we’re attending a wedding, watching that one episode of “The Last of Us” or chopping three pounds of onions for French onion soup. As Sara Bonisteel notes in her recipe, which has five stars and over 5,000 reviews, you’ll spend a good bit of time caramelizing all those onions, but it’s always worth the wait (and tears). A deeply flavored, savory-sweet bowl of sable-brown French onion soup on a cold winter weekend? Featured RecipeView Recipe →Considerably quicker to make is Lidey Heuck’s sheet-pan chicken and potatoes with feta, lemon and dill, which comes together in weeknight time (45 minutes, plus whatever marinating time you can manage) but looks and feels weekend-fancy. The feta and lemon provide necessary acidity to level out the luscious potatoes and crisp-skinned chicken thighs; all you need to add is a simple green salad.

LONDON — European markets are set for a higher open on Friday to close out a busy week of corporate earnings and major central bank decisions. On Wednesday, the U.S. Federal Reserve also left policy unchanged and Chair Jerome Powell poured cold water on speculation about a potential first interest rate cut in March. Preliminary inflation data for the euro zone on Thursday revealed the annual increase in the headline consumer price index eased slightly in January, while core figures declined less than expected and services inflation held steady. Friday is set to be quieter on the earnings front, with Spain's CaixaBank among the biggest names reporting. No major corporate earnings or economic data releases are due from Europe.

Market hopes for big cuts this year are unlikely to pan out, Deutsche Bank wrote. AdvertisementMarkets may find that the anticipated rate-cutting cycle falls short of expectations, Deutsche Bank's George Saravelos wrote on Friday. Futures markets forecast five to six cuts this year, slashing the fed fund rate by over 100 basis points by the year's end. That year, the central bank cut rates by 75 basis points, below hopes for a 200 basis point reduction. We have also written about the US economy's dramatically reduced interest rate sensitivity," Saravelos wrote.

For Orban, Ukraine Is a Pawn in a Longer Game

After months of bluster against financial aid for Ukraine, Prime Minister Viktor Orban of Hungary on Thursday yielded to intense pressure from fellow European leaders, but not before he tried to change the topic in Brussels by meeting with angry Belgian farmers beside a convoy of tractors and voicing support for the protests roiling Europe. In what amounted to a campaign stop ahead of European elections in June that he hopes will shift Europe’s balance of power in his direction, Mr. Orban skipped a dinner with European leaders on Wednesday evening and went to talk to the farmers who had gathered outside the Brussels venue for Thursday’s make-or-break summit meeting on Ukraine. “We need to find new leaders who truly represent the interests of the people,” Mr. Orban told the farmers, leaving little doubt that he includes himself in what he sees as an inevitable changing of the guard in Brussels, the headquarters of the European Union. For Mr. Orban, whether to send billions of dollars to Ukraine has never been a question of immovable principle, and he folded Thursday when told that some member states were serious about isolating him, even stripping him of his vote, if he continued to block the aid. Rather, it is just one of many issues on which he has sought to establish himself as the leader of a pan-European movement in defense of national sovereignty and traditional values against what he scorns as out-of-touch urban elites.

CNN —After a trio of “Kingsman” movies, director Matthew Vaughn essentially hits the reset button with “Argylle,” another fun, highly stylized and less violent spy movie. Cast to the hilt, the film proves inventively twisty if a little convoluted, with the modest disclaimer that it’s not as good as the trailer makes it look. Bryce Dallas Howard and Sam Rockwell as an author and spy, respectively, in "Argylle." As Elly’s guide on this overwhelming journey, Rockwell steals the show, presenting a more human-scale spy who still does amazing things with smart-alecky wit and bravado. As noted, Vaughn’s work stands out for its energetic and playful approach to action, which is very much in evidence here.

Getting chicken breasts right is a flex, but a tricky one. The delicate white meat, so low in fat, can go from supple to chalky in only one distracted, phone-checking, heartbreaking minute. Pierre Franey’s five-star recipe for chicken breasts with lemon solves this problem by searing the chicken quickly on both sides until golden brown and then building a sauce in the same skillet. The pan sauce is rich and tangy, filled with shallots, thyme, two full teaspoons of grated lemon zest and, of course, butter (a French cook’s answer to most things). And the chicken emerges tender and redolent of citrus and herbs.

But it wasn't until the team reviewed sonar data in December that they saw the fuzzy yellow outline of what resembles a plane. “In the end, we came out with an image of a target that we believe very strongly is Amelia’s aircraft," Romeo told The Associated Press. But he said that Romeo’s team must provide “a forensic level of documentation” to prove it’s Earhart’s Lockheed. He would have expected to see straight wings and not swept wings, like the new sonar suggests, as well as engines.

ABUJA, Nigeria (AP) — Three West African nations of Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger have withdrawn from the regional economic bloc known as ECOWAS, their respective juntas announced Sunday, accusing the bloc of “inhumane” sanctions to reverse the coups in their nations. The juntas said in a joint statement read on state television that they have “decided in complete sovereignty on the immediate withdrawal of Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), alleging that the bloc has “moved away from the ideals of its founding fathers and pan-Africanism” after nearly 50 years of its establishment. “Furthermore, ECOWAS, under the influence of foreign powers, betraying its founding principles, has become a threat to its member states and its populations whose happiness it is supposed to ensure,” their statements read. It is the latest twist in a series of events that have deepened political tension in West Africa since it experienced its latest of a string of coups — in Niger — last year. A tablespoon of cooking oil contains around 140 calories, but using a smaller amount, about five milliliters, you can still lubricate your pan for around 45 calories, Tomlinson said. High-fat meat"The cuts of meat you regularly consume can also have a huge say on your fat loss progress," Tomlinson said. Hong Kong CNN —It’s been a rollercoaster week for stocks trading in mainland China and Hong Kong. “For a sustained rally in China stocks, we think China will need to address the core of these concerns (predominantly property sector issues and US-China tensions),” the analysts added. In the 7 days to January 24, exchange-traded funds (ETFs) tracking Chinese stocks recorded large inflows of $12.6 billion, according to a Citi survey of global fund managers. Still, investors have been fleeing Chinese stocks over a much longer period because they are worried about the country’s economic prospects. The country is facing the prospect of a vicious cycle whereby lower demand leads to lower investment, lower production and lower income, thus causing even lower demand.

BANGKOK (AP) — China’s leaders launched a barrage of new policies this week to prop up languishing financial markets and rekindle growth in the world’s second-largest economy. The moves to support lending and spending with billions of dollars of fresh cash gathered pace when the central bank cut bank reserve requirements and issued new rules to encourage banks to lend more to property companies. HOW IS THE CHINESE ECONOMY DOING? The Chinese economy grew at a 5.2% annual pace in 2023, exceeding the government's target, and many indicators including factory output and retail sales show signs of improvement. The moves to put more money into the economy and encourage bank lending might not go far enough, many analysts said.
