Samsung, as the world's biggest maker of memory chips, smartphones and TVs, is a bellwether for global consumption trends. That would be Samsung's lowest quarterly profit since the third quarter of 2016 and compares with an operating profit of 13.87 trillion won a year earlier. Operating profit for Samsung's chip business likely tumbled by 78% to 1.9 trillion won, an average of seven analyst estimates showed. It had about 128.82 trillion won ($100.83 billion) in cash as of end-September. Samsung's mobile business is also expected to see profits shrink, with forecasts calling for a 14% fall to 2.3 trillion won for the quarter.
Samsung has faced pressure from plunging memory prices which has impacted its key profit driving DRAM and NAND business. Samsung's profit could nosedive when it reports fourth-quarter earnings guidance this week as prices for key memory chips continue to plunge amid weak demand. That would be a near 50% fall versus the fourth quarter of 2021. The pessimism stems from a rapid fall in memory prices. NAND and DRAM prices fell sharply in the fourth quarter due to a lack of demand for the products they eventually go into, such a PCs.

The PHLX Semiconductor Sector Index is down nearly 37% year to date. Producing electric vehicles, for instance, involves using a lot more semiconductors, Gleeson noted. Another semiconductor firm he likes is U.S.-based Lattice Semiconductor , which is focusing more on the autos industry. Gleeson isn't the only one who's optimistic on the chip sector. Several Wall Street pros are also urging investors to take a longer-term view on the sector , given the importance of the semiconductor chip in several key secular trends.

Once high-flying semiconductor stocks suffered in 2022, but UBS is betting on these names in the new year. The chip sector suffered as demand for consumer products like PCs and smartphones dwindled, and supply constraints weighed on production. Those issues are far from over, but UBS views some stocks as better positioned to ride out the new year. "Nonetheless, we are bullish on semiconductor stocks for 2023 — expecting stock momentum to really build into CQ2 and 2H:23 before the ISM likely bottoms late in the year." The chip stock, commonly known for its PC and server chips, made history this year as it surpassed its rival Intel in market capitalization .
2022 brought an end to an impressive bull run for technology — and the worst year for the Nasdaq Composite since 2008. Energy stocks, meanwhile, found favor in investors' portfolios, as did healthcare and financials. Given this outlook, CNBC examined some of the worst and best-performing stocks in the Nasdaq 100 this year. Energy stocks Energy won 2022, benefitting from volatile oil prices triggered by the war in Ukraine. Meta Platforms was the worst-performing FAANG name, and one of the poorest-performing Nasdaq stocks.
But based on what Micron had to say, we're not expecting to see shares of Nvidia, AMD and Qualcomm take off yet. Micron's PC forecast is in line with those from Intel (INTC) and other third-party estimates, Wells Fargo said in a note to clients. Data center/cloud In general, data center chips have been relatively resilient compared with the weakness in consumer-focused areas like PCs and mobile phones. But as concerns mount about a potential recession, there's been concerns that data center could be the next shoe to drop. As mentioned, our investment thesis in Nvidia and AMD rests largely on the long-term growth of their data center businesses.

Taiwan-based TSMC, the world's biggest chipmaker, announced a $40 billion investment in Arizona last week. That's despite TSMC's founder previously calling US chip production an "expensive exercise in futility." In the event China — which claims the island as its own — invades the island and chip production screeches to a halt, there could be trillions of dollars in economic losses. First, the cost of chip production in the US might not ultimately be "50% more expensive." The factories will be partially subsidized by the US government through the CHIPS and Science Act, a package passed in August that provided $52 billion to boost US semiconductor chip production.

Experts disagree on how much this will protect the US economy in the event of a Chinese invasion of Taiwan. "These investments are helping us build and strengthen the supply chain here in America," Biden said, adding that "American manufacturing is back." "That's the definition of supply chain resilience. "Ultimately, creating a more resilient supply chain for semiconductors involves more than fab plants." To truly achieve supply chain resilience, Rasser says, the US must only boost production further, but needs similar investments in all areas of the chips supply chain, from raw materials to packaging.

The PCS trade union said staff employed by Britain's interior ministry in passport booths would take action at London's Heathrow and Gatwick airports and a handful of regional ones, plus the Port of Newhaven. The union's General Secretary Mark Serwotka said around 2,000-3,000 staff would be involved in the walkouts on ever day but one between Dec 23-31. A Heathrow spokesperson said the airport was working with airlines and Border Force on plans to mitigate disruption. Gatwick said it expected flights to operate as normal and it would also make extra airport staff available to help passengers on strike days.
