Opinion: ‘Boysober’ comes with some baggage
  + stars: | 2024-02-08 | by ( Opinion Holly Thomas | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +7 min
Are you sure you’re doing the right thing? Whereas “self-partnered’ connotes a vague but cheerful sense of romantic self-care, “boysober” very obviously comes with baggage. To get painfully literal about it: The existence of “boysober” implies the existence of “boydrunk.” Going boysober, one can therefore assume, isn’t just about celibacy or a break from dating. Woodard gets into this in a YouTube video she’s posted ahead of a podcast series on her boysober project. Even if you’re not wholly sure what you’re doing, claiming some agency over that process is reassuring.

"The goal isn't to demonize screens entirely, but to create a healthy balance in your family's life," Ganjian told Business Insider. Make other options more appealingSince we live in a digital world, kids will have more and more access to screens as they grow. Setting up healthy habits means not just restricting screen time but also teaching kids how to manage the pull of digital distractions. Keep all devices in another room during family mealtimes, and consider barring kids from taking their devices into their bedrooms. Decide what must happen before screen timeHermans emphasizes screen time should be in addition to downtime, not in place of it.

U.S. import and export data shows that the majority of the country's trade is on foreign-flagged vessels. The Congressional calls to consider prioritizing U.S.-flagged vessels come at a time when the Iranian-backed Houthis continue to attack shipping in the Red Sea. Other nations, including U.S. ally France, have already declared their priority is to escort French-linked vessels after facing nationalistic pressure. "It could also be argued that directing military action to defend U.S. commercial shipping is within this power. However, most vessels transiting through the Red Sea are not U.S. ships, which raises questions about the extent to which these authorities can be exercised," they wrote.

Japanese students don't always go to school based on where they lived. AbiJapan has an efficient public-transportation system, so yellow school buses were nonexistent. Instead, in the rural area I lived, students commuted to school by public bus, train, bicycle, or some combination of the three. School districts also weren't based on students' addresses, which is generally the case for public schools in the US. Japanese students take a countrywide entrance exam and attend a school based on several aspects, such as price, location, affiliation, and education quality.

It found that 60% of American millennials would take a 20% salary cut for better work-life balance. Just 33% of Baby Boomers were willing to take that salary cut, while 43% of Gen X and 56% of Gen Z agreed. The only countries with more millennials willing to take a near-quarter pay cut to prioritize their quality of life were Thailand at 70% and India at 69%. In September 2023, King's College London published a study that found millennials care more about work-life balance than any other generation. 60% of American millennials would take a 20% salary cut for a better work-life balance.

Lamborghini sold more than 10,000 vehicles last year for the first time ever and Ferrari had a more than 17% increase in revenue. But customers purchasing Lamborghinis, Rolls-Royces and Bentleys have an even wider array of infinitely customizable paint colors and interior materials, to start with, than carmakers offer for less expensive brands. If the customer has a favorite shirt, for example, the car paint could be matched to the fabric color. At Dixon’s Rolls-Royce dealership three quarters of the roughly 90 cars sold each year include some degree of custom options, she said. While she and Rolls-Royce’s design team can provide guidance, in the end, the choices have to be the customer’s.

Even Whistler Blackcomb ski resort was only a two-hour drive from home — where the diverse terrain and charming village are world-famous and Winter Olympics-worthy for good reason. The ride in a private taxi to Niseko, Hokkaido took around two hours. Here are five reasons Niseko offered a better experience than Whistler, but why I would still choose the North American ski resort over the Japanese ski destination. Even if the snow in Whistler isn't as consistent, it surpasses the Japanese ski town for many reasons. We will probably make our way back to a different ski resort in Japan while living in Asia.

Officials cautioned that there is no sense that Tehran’s growing wariness is likely to change its broader strategy of supporting proxy attacks on US and Western targets — although it could signal adjustments around the margins. But officials do believe that Iran is pursuing a calibrated approach to the conflict that is designed to avoid sparking all-out war. But some current and former US officials are skeptical that Iran will substantively change its tactics. ‘Varying degress of loyalty’The escalations also underscore the varying degrees of control that Iran actually has over its proxy groups. Among the groups, Iran has the least amount of operational control over the Houthis in Yemen, multiple officials told CNN.

AI talent is very much in demand, with some staffers from the likes of Stripe, Amazon, and Google making the switch to smaller upstarts. AI companies are using some of those funds to shell out on sizable salary packages to attract talent, according to data obtained by Business Insider. While salary transparency remains a problem in both Europe and the US, the latter has taken more steps to make salary data visible to employees and candidates. With considerable research prowess, Europe has become a hotbed for producing AI talent. Business Insider has pulled together salary data from some of the most in-demand AI companies that have published H1B salary data, including OpenAI, Anthropic, and Midjourney.

Despite calls by some legal experts to recuse herself from the case to protect its integrity, she is not expected to do so, the sources told CNN. Still, a source familiar with the thinking inside the DA’s office told CNN they would be “mystified” if it succeeds in removing her. “I think a lot of what I’ve read is more of a distraction and not legally substantive,” James told CNN in a sit-down interview. I think it’s very unlikely that we’ll see any criminal action come out of that,” Kreis told CNN. If Willis ultimately survives the current push to disqualify her, the case would effectively be back on track, sources told CNN.

By Sakura Murakami and Tom BatemanSUZU, Japan (Reuters) - A month on from a huge earthquake that struck Japan's west coast, survivors are battling freezing and unsanitary conditions while tens of thousands of homes remain without running water. More than 230 people died in the magnitude 7.6 quake, Japan's deadliest in eight years, which also left 44,000 homes fully or partially destroyed while 40,000 have no running water. More than 13,000 residents are living in evacuation centres, according to the Ishikawa government. Bitter cold is also posing a challenge, especially for scores of residents who are sleeping in their cars after their homes were wrecked. Over 900 deaths from the devastating Kobe earthquake of 1995 happened after the quake, due in part to the spread of flu and lack of medical care at evacuation centres, according to public health experts.

It's ironic: We are at a moment where supply of money and demand for goods are intersecting. We have two markets: the Treasury market and the equity market, with the first more powerful than the second, even if we can't tell that in the scrum of earnings announcements. If the Fed signals more rate cuts, then we will be set up for higher stock prices if the companies deliver good earnings. The possibility of higher earnings so far has been controlled by supply and demand and the disinflation it is breeding, which may continue this week. Hence the power of their earnings to generate the mask of a higher market price-to-earnings ratio.

Read previewWhen Rigel Robinson was elected to the Berkeley City Council in 2018 — just months after graduating from UC Berkeley — he was determined to tackle the city's housing crisis as its youngest-ever council member. As an undergrad serving on Berkeley's student government, Robinson grew passionate about building more affordable student housing in the notoriously expensive city. Meanwhile, the university is facing a severe student housing shortage amid a broader affordability crisis. But Robinson's advocacy for housing in People's Park was met with a wave of harassment from residents who wanted to keep the park as is. Earlier this month, the conflict escalated as hundreds of police officers arrested dozens of protesters and cleared tents at People's Park.

Josh Shapiro has a new slogan for how he wants to run Pennsylvania — and it's not fit for kids' ears. “There’s children here, so we’ll just say ‘stuff.’”That was the G-rated version of the line he’s been delivering in recent months. His social media team also has used the phrase online in videos. One of Shapiro's fellow Pennsylvania Democrats, U.S. Sen. John Fetterman, cussed routinely on social media while on his way to winning the Senate seat in 2022. Still, Fetterman — known for his blunt and irreverent talk — generally confined his profanities to his writings on social media when describing his disdain for, say, Pennsylvania's relatively low minimum wage.
