REUTERS/Brendan McDermid/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsNEW YORK, Nov 17 (Reuters) - Are U.S. stocks poised to continue their dramatic run, or is a pause ahead? The index is now up 17% for the year and about 6% from its record closing high from January 2022. Analysts at Ned Davis Research, which has been recommending an overweight to stocks, this week said investors should further shift into equities and away from bonds. One source of worry has been a renewed climb in stocks' valuations.

Stocks to outperform fixed income in 2024, says Barclays
  + stars: | 2023-11-16 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
REUTERS/Caitlin Ochs/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsNov 16 (Reuters) - Global equities are set to outperform core fixed-income assets next year, as threats of a global economic slowdown have declined, Barclays strategists said in a note on Thursday. We think stocks will benefit from a fairly benign bottom to this business cycle and look through near-term earnings disappointments," said Ajay Rajadhyaksha, global chairman of research at Barclays. "We now turn overweight (on) global equities over core fixed income." Barclays expects mid-to-high single-digit equity returns in both the U.S. and Europe next year, even as bond yields stay elevated. JP Morgan had recommended commodities over stocks and bonds.

Traders work on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in New York City, U.S., June 29, 2023. Retail traders, who used to band together on online platforms to chase highly shorted shares during the days of easy money, have been seeing a reversal of fortunes as rising rates diminish their holdings in high-risk, high-return assets. "Seasonality suggests that retail investors are unlikely to support any year-end rally, except for big-tech," Vanda's Mantle said. Despite their overall slow buying, there were spurts of activity where retail traders chased sharp rallies in some small cap names - a typical trading strategy. "If we don't get any follow through it would be hard to say we've got retail traders back in the game," said Paul Nolte, senior wealth advisor and market strategist at Murphy & Sylvest Wealth Management.

BlackRock files for spot ethereum ETF to further crypto push
  + stars: | 2023-11-16 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
BlackRock is proposing to convert the trust to a "spot" ETF, which means it will own ether instead of futures products tied to the crypto token. While futures-based crypto ETFs have previously been approved by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the regulator has long contended that the spot crypto market is prone to fraud and manipulation. BlackRock dipped its toes in the crypto space with its filing for a spot bitcoin ETF in June. Coinbase Custody, a unit of crypto exchange Coinbase (COIN.O), will hold the proposed ETF's ether in custody. The company is also the proposed custodian of BlackRock's bitcoin ETF.

While Fed officials haven't indicated how many months in a row it will take of easing inflation data to reach that conclusion, 12-month core CPI has fallen each month since April. The Fed prefers core inflation measures as a better gauge of long-run inflation trends. Traders appear to have more certainty than Fed officials at this point. If correct, that would take the benchmark rate down to a target range of 4.25%-4.5% and would be twice as aggressive as the pace Fed officials penciled in back in September. But pricing of Fed actions can be volatile, and there are two more inflation reports ahead before that meeting.
