This summer, I found myself drawn to Senegal. I had recently relocated from the Bahamas to Brooklyn and was yearning for community. The way they talked about the place, the food, the drink, captivated me. I was especially intrigued by descriptions of poulet yassa, a Senegalese meal that reminded me of steamed chicken, a soul-warming Bahamian dish that my mom would make. I wondered, Would yassa taste like home?

Corcoran's mother, Florence, was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in her late 60s. About eight months ago, Corcoran finally saw a doctor to evaluate her own risk for dementia. There, Corcoran loved watching the systems at Florence created to keep the home and the children organized. Advertisement"I was admiring her with the systems," Corcoran said. Corcoran paid one of her sisters — who lived nearest Florence — to quit her job and become their mother's caretaker.

While parents have used location-tracking apps to keep an eye on their kids since the tech was invented, millennials and Gen Zers are now turning the all-seeing eye onto their parents. The kids who grew up with extra watchful parents are now carefully eyeing their parents' every move. While phones lacked tracking technology when Shafer was younger, her parents set hard limits on which hours she could use her first cellphone and whom she could contact. She described her mom and dad's parenting style as "very typical of overbearing parents, especially immigrant parents." And more parents are tracking their kids in college to help quell their anxiety about the separation.

CNN —Riley Keough completed her late mother Lisa Marie Presley’s memoir, but it didn’t come without a cost. The actress spoke with People about “From Here to the Great Unknown,” which tells the story of the life of her mom, who died in January 2023 of complications from a prior weight loss surgery. “Because my mother was Elvis Presley’s daughter, she was constantly talked about, argued over and dissected,” Riley, 35, told the publication via email. “The tapes are an incredible portrait of the force of nature that she was,” Keough said. “I want to give voice to my mother in a way that eluded her while she was alive.”“From Here to the Great Unknown” publishes on October 8.

Political organizations supporting Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump are touting both campaigns' messages of “freedom” as they woo Latinas, a key voting bloc. Against Hillary Clinton in 2016, Trump won just 28% of Hispanic women voters compared to Clinton’s 67%, according to Pew. Also, at least 13 states saw increases in Latina voter registrations when Biden left the race and endorsed Harris, according to TargetSmart CEO Tom Bonier. Republican Mercedes Schlapp, one of the “Latinas for Freedom” organizers, said the issue of abortion is one for states to decide. The group is defining freedom for Latinas as freedom from economic policies they say are "socialist."

Few address child care, for infants or beyond. Since Dobbs, seven states have had ballot initiatives on the topic, with the abortion rights position winning in each state. In November, at least 10 more initiatives aimed at restoring or protecting abortion rights will be in front of voters across the country. But Brahm has also rallied an array of political, faith, academic, medical and advocacy leaders into a coalition called “Building a Post-Roe Future” that calls for more affordable health care and child care, expanded child tax credits, paid parental leave, flexible work hours and enforced pre-natal support. Though paid parental leave has been a big topic of discussion around the country, the only states to enact such measures since Dobbs are those where abortion rights are protected.
