A company flag flies outside the offices of Thermo Fisher Scientific offices in Waltham, Massachusetts, U.S., August 2, 2023. The deal lifted Olink's U.S.-listed shares nearly 67% in early trading, while shares of Thermo Fisher were down over 1%. Olink's acquisition will help Thermo Fisher's customers in the biotech industry "to meaningfully accelerate discovery and scientific breakthroughs," Thermo Fisher CEO Marc Casper said. Thermo Fisher said it would pay Olink shareholders $26 per share, an about 74% premium to the U.S.-listed stock's closing price on Monday. The deal is a good fit for Thermo Fisher and "checks the box strategically," Evercore ISI analyst Vijay Kumar wrote in a note.

Describing that anticipated outcome while keeping open the possibility of future rate increases will be one challenge Powell faces. Another will be discounting speculation about the prospect of rate cuts or changes to other aspects of Fed policy, such as the ongoing reduction of the central bank's balance sheet. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note is just about six-tenths of a percentage point below the Fed's policy rate; when the gap between the two shifts from negative to positive is when monetary policy gets perhaps its truest test. Recent data on balance don't fully back the Fed's view of a gently slowing economy and steadily easing inflation. "Assuming the economy keeps growing ... the Fed will get back to hiking," Blitz said.

A newly remodeled Ford F250 Super Duty truck is displayed at the new Louisville Ford truck plant in Louisville, Kentucky, U.S. September 30, 2016. Analysts at Wells Fargo estimated that Ford will lose about $150 million per week in core profit from the Kentucky plant strike. Even with 8,700 workers at Ford's Kentucky Truck plant now on strike, less than a quarter of the 150,000 UAW workers at the Detroit Three automakers are now on strike. Ford warned on Wednesday that workers at a dozen other factories could be sent home because of the truck plant walkout. Its Kentucky truck plant, the company's most profitable operation, generates $25 billion in annual sales, about a sixth of Ford's global automotive revenue.

[1/3] Traders work on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in New York City, U.S., January 10, 2022. Atlanta Fed Bank President Raphael Bostic on Tuesday said the U.S. central bank does not need to raise rates any further, and sees no recession ahead. Late on Monday, top-ranking Fed officials indicated that rising yields on long-term U.S. Treasury bonds, which directly influence financing costs for households and businesses, could keep the Fed from further increases in its short-term policy rate. U.S. Treasury yields fell on the comments but also partly in reaction to continuing violence in the Middle East. In late morning trading, U.S. 10-year yields were last down 10.6 basis points (bps) at 4.676%.

"If long-term interest rates remain elevated because of higher term premiums, there may be less need to raise the fed funds rate," Logan said. The Dallas Fed president said the economy has been stronger than she had expected, as has been the labor market, and that inflation was still too high despite progress in lowering it. But because Logan ran the New York Fed's bond portfolio for years before she took the top job at the Dallas Fed, her views on what's driving long-term rates higher could carry considerable weight as policymakers weigh their next moves. "The expectation of lower Federal Reserve asset holdings over time implies that other investors will need to hold more long-duration securities, which appears to be one factor among the many contributing to higher term premiums," Logan said. Figuring out how much of the higher long-term rates is due to higher term premiums is complex, she added.
