The health commissioner chosen by Mayor Eric Adams to lead New York City out of the Covid-19 pandemic resigned on Monday, the third top administration official this month to leave, or announce plans to, amid multiple federal investigations of the mayor’s inner circle. The commissioner, Dr. Ashwin Vasan, a mental health expert, cited a desire to spend more time with his family in his decision to step down, which will take effect early next year. “As anyone with a family — or a chosen family — knows, you are never alone in service, Dr. Vasan said in a statement. “My wife and three young children have served alongside me, bearing the brunt of my absence and shouldering so much. South Carolina state Rep. Seth Rose, a Democrat in Columbia and one of Marsh’s attorneys, called it a “really tragic” case. But at the hospital, Marsh learned that her infant, a girl, had not survived. Historically, birth outcomes for Black women in Orangeburg County, where Marsh lost her pregnancy, have ranked among the worst in South Carolina. She is taking classes at a local community college and hopes to reenroll at South Carolina State University to earn a four-year degree.

President Joe Biden's student debt forgiveness plan faces another setback as a federal judge extended the temporary restraining order against it on Wednesday. U.S. District Judge Randal Hall, who was appointed by former Republican President George W. Bush, said that Biden's plan would remain blocked for an additional 14 days. The ruling came as the Biden administration was expected to publish its final rule on a revised student loan forgiveness plan in October. The judge first issued a temporary restraining order on Sept. 5 shortly after the lawsuit was filed. Those enrolled in the plan, around 8 million people, do not have to make payments at this time.
