Could they have funded them and given them additional capital, provided loans that would have gotten them through this hard time?" The World Economic Forum's Chief Economists Outlook, published Monday, showed chief economists by and large do not currently see large-scale systemic risk from the recent banking chaos, but they do think it will have some economic impact. "Although the chief economists are broadly sanguine about the systemic implications of the recent financial disruption – 69% characterize it as isolated episodes rather than signs of systemic vulnerability – they point to potentially damaging knock-on effects," the report said.

The Federal Aviation Administration has launched nearly 170 new flight routes that are shorter and faster, aiming to cut down on congestion in the eastern U.S. It's part of a seven-year effort from the FAA and airlines to redraw high-altitude route maps for planes, the agency said Monday. The FAA launched the 169 new routes last week, and is abandoning older ones, which were longer and zigzagged more. Those longer routes were designed for planes relying on ground-based radar and not the GPS that modern aircraft use. The FAA estimated that the new routes would reduce about 6,000 minutes of travel time a year.
Heinz appealed to the internet to find a fisherman who survived 24 days at sea on ketchup. Heinz said the "ketchup boat guy" preferred cash so he could get a new boat more quickly. The company offered to give fisherman Elvis Francois a new boat complete with a navigation system after learning he'd survived 24 days lost at sea on just ketchup and seasonings. Francois told Insider he could only afford to buy a small used boat and engines as the money Heinz gave him "wasn't enough" for a sailboat. He spent EC$18,000 on a small boat and EC$20,000 on two motors.
Gap will cut 1,800 corporate jobs

New York CNN —Gap said Thursday that it will lay off 1,800 employees as the struggling retailer looks to cut costs. As of January, Gap had around 95,000 employees globally, and 9% of them were corporate staff. In September, Gap slashed roughly 500 corporate jobs. Dozens of major companies have cut jobs in recent months, including Tyson Foods (TSN), 3M (MMM) and Lyft (LYFT) in April. The slew of widely publicized layoffs comes as the job market begins to slow, following months of historic post-pandemic growth.

April 27 (Reuters) - Gap Inc (GPS.N) said on Thursday it would cut about 1,800 jobs in a second round of layoffs, joining a set of big U.S. companies that are downsizing in earnest as high inflation eats into consumer wallets. In September, Gap eliminated about 500 corporate workers across a range of departments as it struggled to protect margins and battled weak sales. As of Jan. 28, the apparel chain had about 95,000 employees, according to a regulatory filing. The Wall Street Journal first reported on the new round of job cuts earlier this week. Counter-drone training has also become common throughout the Russian military. Having used drones and seen drones used with increasing frequency, the Russian military has also expanded its counter-drone training. The threat is now considered so widespread that most Russian troops, regardless of military specialty, are getting instruction in spotting and dealing with drones. Ukraine's military has been bolstering its drone defenses throughout the war, as shown in the Western military aid being sent to Kyiv. Despite having kinetic and electronic-warfare countermeasures to take out Russian drones, Ukraine still faces a difficult challenge.
CNN —An accused MS-13 gang member has been arrested in Holiday, Florida, and charged in what the sheriff described as a “demonic” murder of an Uber Eats delivery driver whose remains were found dismembered at the suspect’s home last week, according to investigators. Investigators believe Solis tried to rob the driver and ultimately killed him, the sheriff’s office said in a news release. The sheriff said Solis is affiliated with MS-13, a violent criminal gang with international ties to drug and human trafficking. When investigators opened the trash bags at the home on Friday, they found what appeared to be human remains in two of the bags, the complaint said. There is no known connection between the suspect and victim, Nocco said.

Chance Saltzman took the stage for his keynote at the Space Symposium in Colorado Springs, Colorado, this week, his message was simple: The U.S. is in a new era of space activity. "The threats that we face to our on-orbit capabilities from our strategic competitors has grown substantially," Saltzman, the U.S. Space Force's second-ever chief of space operations, said in a CNBC interview after the speech. Case in point: the Space Force's recently announced procurement strategy for more launch services. With business to be awarded next year, the National Security Space Launch Phase 3 is estimated to run into the billions of dollars and is expected to draw bids from the likes of Rocket Lab , Relativity Space and Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin, among others. While still just a fraction of the country's overall defense budget, the Space Force's $30 billion request for fiscal 2024 represents a 15% increase from this year's enacted levels.
NEW YORK, April 20 (Reuters) - An exiled Chinese businessman charged by U.S. prosecutors with leading a more than $1 billion fraud will remain in jail after a federal judge in Manhattan on Thursday rejected a proposed $25 million bail package. Guo had also proposed 24-hour guard, and being subjected to detention with GPS monitoring at his wife's Connecticut home. He had also been a business associate of former Donald Trump adviser Steve Bannon, who was arrested in a 2020 fraud case while aboard Guo's yacht. In seeking bail, Guo's lawyer Stephen Cook said Guo would remain in the United States if released on bond "because the risk to his life is simply too great for him to leave." The defendant has pleaded not guilty to 11 charges including securities fraud, wire fraud and concealing money laundering.
WASHINGTON, April 15 (Reuters) - U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said banks are likely to become more cautious and may tighten lending further in the wake of recent bank failures, possibly negating the need for further Federal Reserve interest rate hikes. "Banks are likely to become somewhat more cautious in this environment," Yellen said in the interview, which is scheduled to air on Sunday. But Yellen said she was not yet seeing anything "dramatic enough or significant enough" in this area to alter her economic outlook. Some Fed officials have said the U.S. central bank should adopt a more cautious footing as they expect banks to restrict lending in the months ahead. Asked whether sanctions could erode the dollar's role as the world's reserve currency, Yellen acknowledged potential risks.

WASHINGTON, April 15 (Reuters) - U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said banks are likely to tighten lending further in the wake of recent bank failures, possibly negating the need for further Federal Reserve rate hikes, according to a CNN interview transcript released on Saturday. "Banks are likely to become somewhat more cautious in this environment," Yellen said in the interview scheduled to air on Sunday. "We already saw some tightening of lending standards in the banking system prior to that episode, and there may be some more to come." She said that would lead to a restriction in credit in the economy that "could be a substitute for further interest rate hikes that the Fed needs to make." His proposals include investing in American industry, teaching students workplace skills, and expanding the Earned Income Tax Credit. Forecasting "storm clouds ahead," Dimon wants the government to drive economic growth by subsidizing industry, investing in the workforce, and reducing income inequality. Following in Buffett's footsteps, Dimon said JPMorgan owes its business success to the "extraordinary conditions our country creates" for economic growth. Akin to Musk, Dimon said he didn't want the government to micromanage industry, believing "Adam Smith's invisible hand still prevails." He suggested expanding the Earned Income Tax Credit, a tax refund that allows lower-income working individuals and families to keep more of their earned income.
The US has supplied Ukraine with more than 3,000 of the advanced shells, according to a report. In the video, which was posted to Zaluzhny's Facebook page, a Ukrainian soldier praised the high-precision Excalibur shells, saying they were extremely important for accurately striking Russian forces' equipment. The GPS-guided 155 mm shells offer an accurate, longer-range alternative to conventional artillery shell, capable of hitting within seven feet of their target. The Excalibur has a range of 25 miles, according to Pentagon budget documents from last year that first confirmed the shells had been sent to Ukraine. It is thought that the US has sent around 3,000 Excalibur rounds to Ukraine since Russia invaded last year, Forces.net reported in January.
“I do think there’s a path to bring down inflation while maintaining what I think all of us would regard is a strong labor market,” Yellen said. Yellen said she is seeing some easing of stress in the labor market, including increases in unemployment claims, declines in job openings, and upticks in labor force participation. The labor market gaining more slack will help bring inflation down, but it doesn’t mean there needs to be a significant jump in unemployment, she said. “I think the strong labor market and bringing down inflation are compatible goals,” she said. “Americans should note that America has a safe, strong banking system,” she said.
