Read previewBillie Eilish has gleefully joined the extended "Brat" universe with her featured spot on "Guess," a fan-favorite track from Charli XCX's latest album. Related storiesNow, with "Guess," Eilish enters as both a foil and hopeful love interest. She sing-raps as if she's responding to Charli's original lyrics, breaking the fourth wall with a seductive wink: "Charli likes boys, but she knows I'd hit it." In the "Guess" remix, Charli tweaks her own verse as a nod to Eilish's new era: "Wear 'em, post 'em, might remix it / Eat it up for lunch, yeah, it's so delicious." Each "Brat" remix is arguably as good as the original, yet distinct and unique in its own right.

Earth’s electric and magnetic fields and gravity cause charged particles in the ionosphere to flow away from Earth’s magnetic equator. Typically, plasma bubbles are long and straight because they form along Earth’s magnetic field lines. GOLD observations captured C-shaped and reverse C-shaped plasma bubbles close together in the ionosphere on October 12, 2020, and December 26, 2021. So far, GOLD has only observed two instances of the close pairings, but the C-shaped bubbles have the potential to disrupt communications. “Due to such wide view and continuous measurements, GOLD has allowed us to observe these mysteries within the ionosphere,” Karan said.

Meta is in discussions with Awkwafina, Judi Dench and other actors and influencers for the right to incorporate their voices into a digital assistant product called MetaAI, according to three people with knowledge of the talks, as the company pushes to build more products that feature artificial intelligence. Apart from Ms. Dench and Awkwafina, Meta is in talks with the comedian Keegan-Michael Key and other celebrities, said the people, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the discussions are private. The talks remain fluid, and it is unclear which actors and influencers, if any, may sign on to the project, the people said. If the parties come to an agreement, Meta could pay millions of dollars in fees to the actors. Meta, which owns Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, has invested heavily in artificial intelligence, which the biggest tech companies are racing to develop and lead.

Prickles have been around for at least 400 million years, dating back to when ferns and their relatives emerged with some bearing prickles on their stems. Lonely Guy genesBy removing prickles from various species, including roses and eggplants, the authors found that a LOG gene was responsible for the prickles in about 20 types of plants studied. LOG-related genes are found in all plants, even dating back to mosses, which are regarded as the first dry-land plant, Lippman said. “(LOG genes) have been repeatedly co-opted (a biological shift in a trait’s function) in different plant species for the formation of prickles, and also repeatedly lost in lineages where prickles are lost. For agricultural purposes, removing prickles could make harvesting easier and pave the way to get lesser-known produce into grocery stores.

The company's sales team has been struggling to adapt to a much different market, according to 14 current and former employees from Tesla's sales division in North America. The carmaker is also attempting to fix a spate of bad publicity surrounding its CEO, Elon Musk — all with little in the way of advertising initiatives or traditional sales strategies. The electric-car maker made its mark by breaking industry standards with its ad-free, direct-to-consumer sales model. Now, some of Tesla's sales staff believe it's time for the company to begin acting like a traditional automaker. Musk has been vague about when a new, more economically priced Tesla model would hit the market, saying only that it could happen in 2025.

Tom Daley unveils his latest Olympic knitting handiwork
  + stars: | 2024-08-01 | by ( Leah Dolan | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +3 min
CNN —While most Olympic divers sitting poolside at Paris’ Aquatic Center are anxiously twiddling their thumbs, one athlete has been twiddling a pair of knitting needles. Tom Daley, the 30-year-old Team GB diver who won his fifth Olympic medal earlier this week, has unveiled his latest achievement: a handknitted Paris Games themed sweater. Daley has been photographed knitting during every stolen moment while in Paris for the Olympic Games — whether he is watching his teammates compete or resting between his own events. “I don’t know how to just do nothing,” Daley said during an interview with CNN in Paris on Thursday. “So I sketched it out, made tension gauges and did the measurements and the maths to be able to figure out how to make it… You know (knitting) can be quite technical at times.

Families for some of the 346 people killed in two fatal Boeing 737 Max crashes said on Wednesday a U.S. judge should reject the planemaker's proposed plea deal with the Justice Department and the government should seek a much higher fine. Spokespeople for Boeing and the Justice Department did not immediately comment on the families' filings. The DOJ told Boeing earlier this month it could accept a settlement that branded the planemaker a felon or fight the charge in court. The Justice Department has a separate criminal probe ongoing into the Alaska Airlines jet that was missing four key bolts. Reuters —A Tesla Model S car was in “Full Self-Driving” mode when it hit and killed a 28-year-old motorcyclist in the Seattle area in April, police said, making it at least the second fatal accident involving the technology on which Tesla CEO Elon Musk is pinning his hopes. Tesla says its “Full Self-Driving (Supervised)” software requires active driver supervision and does not make vehicles autonomous. Previously, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said there was one fatal accident involving a Tesla vehicle using FSD software between August 2022 and August 2023. This year, Musk shelved Tesla’s all-new affordable cars and increased his bets on self-driving vehicles, saying he will be shocked if Tesla cannot achieve full self-driving capability next year. In December 2023, Tesla was forced to recall nearly all its vehicles on U.S. roads to add safeguards to the software.

Meta has agreed to pay $1.4 billion to settle a lawsuit by the state of Texas over the Facebook owner's unauthorized use of biometric data by users, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton said Tuesday. Meta will pay out the $1.4 billion to Texas over five years, the office said. "Any abuse of Texans' sensitive data will be met with the full force of the law," Paxton said.
