"This also puts an added burden on Israel while they go after Hamas, but that does not lessen the need for – to operate in line with the laws of war," Biden said. In his first press conference since Hamas attacked Israel Oct, 7, Biden also said he was alarmed by reports that Israeli settlers were attacking Palestinians in the West Bank. But the West Bank is a major point of contention between Palestinians and Israel, whose prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, has encouraged Israeli settlements there. … I'm sure innocents have been killed, and it is the price of waging war," Biden said. President Biden and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese of Australia expressed their shared condemnation of the Hamas attack this month on Israeli civilians and soldiers, saying during a state visit on Wednesday that they would stand with Israel. In recent months, the Australians have accelerated efforts to supply missiles for the United States and expand joint military cooperation and training between the two countries. At one point, Mr. Albanese invoked the words of Mr. Biden’s late son, Beau, to emphasize the strength of their partnership: “When there’s an Australian with you, they’ll always have your back.” Mr. Biden bowed his head. The Biden administration is relying on Congress to pass legislation that would allow for the shipment of nuclear-powered submarines to Australia, as part of an agreement called AUKUS among the United States, Britain and Australia. U.S. officials said before the visit that Mr. Biden would tell the prime minister that the United States would fulfill that promise.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden on Wednesday spoke out against retaliatory attacks by Israeli settlers against Palestinians in the West Bank in the aftermath of the Oct. 7 Hamas attacks on Israel. Settler violence against Palestinians has intensified since the Hamas attack, and Palestinians have been killed by settlers, according to Palestinian authorities. The West Bank Protection Consortium, a coalition of nongovernmental organizations and donor countries, including the European Union, says hundreds of Palestinians have been forcibly displaced in the West Bank due to settler violence since Oct. 7. The president also said that after the Israel-Hamas conflict comes to an end, Israeli, Palestinians and their partners must work toward a two-state solution. “Israel should be incredibly careful to be sure that they’re focusing on going after the folks that are propagating this war,” Biden said.

She has served at the National Security Council, at the State Department as a negotiator for the Bosnia Peace Accords, and as Deputy US Trade Representative. A similarly firm hand — and robust US leadership — will also be necessary for any peace deal to be forged in the Middle East. Similarly, Hamas’ current leadership would certainly not be welcome at the table should Mideast peace talks resume. That should compel them to help increase isolation of Hamas as well as play an active and useful role in future peace talks. With the key players thinking strategically and acting tactically — as eventually happened in Bosnia — peace in the Middle East may have a chance.

U.S. President Joe Biden, in remarks looking beyond the war that began with an Oct. 7 attack on Israel by Palestinian Hamas militants, said on Wednesday that the future should include Israeli and Palestinian states side by side. Israel has resisted both, arguing that Hamas would only take advantage and create new threats to Gaza civilians. "We will keep striking in Gaza in order to achieve the goals of the war," Israeli military spokesman Daniel Hagari said. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a televised statement that Israel was "preparing for a ground invasion. Opinion | Why Jews Cannot Stop Shaking Right Now

There is a reason so many Jews cannot stop shaking right now. The concept of intergenerational trauma doesn’t begin to describe the dark place into which this month’s attack plunged Jewish communities around the world. Many American Jews, like Jews around the world, are descendants of those who survived. As was true in ancient times, the ties between global Jewish communities and Israel are concrete, specific, intimate and personal. Millions of American Jews, not to mention Jews in Britain, France, Australia and elsewhere, have friends and relatives in Israel.

Ricardo Pires, a spokesman for UNICEF, says his organization urgently needs access to Gaza to facilitate the movement of supplies and relief workers. In response, Israel sealed border crossings with Gaza as it began targeting Hamas positions. Pires says UNICEF currently has amassed supplies in Egypt that are ready for delivery into Gaza once the Rafah crossing – the sole border crossing with Egypt – reopens. Biden told reporters the U.S. plans to coordinate with the Egyptian government to repair the roads into Gaza. “Water supplies are reaching a life-threatening low across Gaza amidst the sustained blockade,” Slater says.

In Los Angeles, Rabbi Sharon Brous, a well-known progressive activist who regularly criticizes the Israeli government, described from the pulpit her horror and feelings of “existential loneliness,” her voice breaking. From email listservs of progressive Jewish groups to protests on university campuses to social-media campaigns by prominent liberal Jewish celebrities like Sarah Silverman, the war is bringing to a head more than a decade of tensions about Israel on the American left. Interviews with dozens of liberal Jewish leaders and voters, and a review of social media posts, private emails and text chains of liberal Jewish groups, reveal a politically engaged swath of American Jewry who are reaching a breaking point. He sent hundreds of letters to Los Angeles city officials urging them to denounce the organization and label it a “hate group.” The D.S.A. Biden Urges Unity Behind Aid to U.S. Allies

He said he would ask Congress on Friday for a combined security funding package – described at being around $100 billion for Ukraine, Israel, Taiwan and the U.S.-Mexico border – to help Ukraine and Israel defend themselves. Biden warned that Putin would not stop there, perhaps moving to Poland or another NATO nation and escalating the conflict. NATO's charter says that if one member nation is attacked, all of NATO will come to that member's aid. Biden called for unity in the United States, including an intolerance for both antisemitism and Islamophobia in the wake of the Hamas attack. But he said it was imperative that the United States take the lead during the separate crises he said were related by the common theme of defending democracy and the dignity of people.

Israel and the U.S. said the cause was a failed rocket launch by anti-Israeli Palestinian militants in Gaza who denied responsibility. Amid fears the conflict could spread beyond Gaza, Biden had planned to meet Arab leaders. But Jordan called off his planned summit there with Egypt and the Palestinian Authority after the hospital blast. During Biden's visit, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office said Israel would let food, water and medicines reach southern Gaza via Egypt. En route to Washington, Biden told reporters he was blunt with Israel about the need to facilitate aid to Gaza.

President Biden will meet with Egyptian and Palestinian leaders at a summit in the Jordanian capital on Wednesday to discuss the crisis in Gaza, Jordan's royal court said. The leaders will discuss the war's "dangerous" repercussions for the region and how to find a political resolution to the crisis, Jordan said. Biden will "reiterate that Hamas does not stand for the Palestinian people's right to dignity and self-determination, and he'll discuss again the humanitarian needs of all civilians in Gaza," National Security Council spokesman John Kirby told reporters late Monday.

President Joe Biden said in an interview aired on Sunday that he believes Hamas, the Palestinian militant group, must be fully eliminated and that it is necessary to establish a Palestinian state. There needs to be a path to a Palestinian state," Biden said in an interview filmed Thursday for CBS' "60 Minutes," which aired Sunday evening. In the interview, Biden said that while Hamas needs to be neutralized, the group does not "represent all the Palestinian people. Earlier Sunday, White House national security advisor Jake Sullivan similarly called for the protection of innocent civilians. Still in Sunday's interview, Biden said he does not think it is necessary to send in U.S. military troops to bolster Israel's counteroffensive.

CNN —US leaders are mounting an urgent effort to prevent Israel’s war against Hamas and a resulting civilian catastrophe in Gaza from escalating into a widening regional conflict that could snowball into an even greater geopolitical crisis after this month’s horrific attacks. Hamas has urged civilians to ignore Israeli warnings to evacuate the northern part of Gaza.
