“When you bring an act into this town, you want to bring it in heavy. Don’t waste any time with cheap shucks and misdemeanors. Get right into felonies.”It’s been more than a half-century since Hunter S. Thompson went in search of the American dream on his drug-addled, off-the-rails road trip to Las Vegas. His 1971 book, “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas,” became an essential read for generations of teenagers who were just starting to question the world and came to define the desert gambling mecca. The book also gave birth to a new literary form, gonzo journalism, in which the reporter was a leading character — in this case a pill-popping, pot-smoking, tequila-swilling, acid-dropping “dope fiend” plunging headlong into the story.

Once known mainly for gambling and debauchery, Las Vegas has gained professional sports teams with the National Football League, the National Hockey League, Women's National Basketball Association and the United Soccer League in under a decade. The $2 billion venue was built for the NFL's Las Vegas Raiders and opened in 2020. "It's not just that the NFL's here, which is fantastic and a recognition of the maturity of Las Vegas," said Hill. Allegiant Stadium brought 1.52 million incremental visitors to the area, according to the 2023 impact report by the Las Vegas Raiders, with 88% of those visitors saying it was "the primary reason for their visit." In 2023, 40.8 million visitors flocked to Las Vegas, up 5.2% from the prior year, though still not as high as pre-pandemic levels.

Ramped-up domestic production of lithium is a key part of President Joe Biden's blueprint for a greener future less dependent on fossil fuels. NEW YORK (AP) — There was nary a sandworm in sight Thursday night on the runway of Christian Siriano, but he definitely had “Dune” on his mind as he kicked off New York Fashion Week. The glam squad of the sand had places to go and people to see in their earth tones and orange shimmer worthy of a Sahara sunset. “I was like, what if we lived in this world that was kind of apocalyptic, but in the sand in the desert. Nothing about Las Vegas is measured in moderation. The fluorescent buildings are towering and intentionally bright. Around casino floors, at pool parties and on the Vegas Strip, throngs of tourists daily play chicken with their alcohol tolerance levels and credit card limits. With the Super Bowl, the country’s biggest annual sporting event, happening in the desert city on Sunday, the crowds (an estimated 450,000 visitors) and parties are expected to get even bigger and livelier. But it’s not just the hotels and casinos that’ll be bustling in the days leading up to the big game, between the San Francisco 49ers and the defending champion Kansas City Chiefs: Around 1,000 private planes are expected at Las Vegas area airports.

To many Americans, Las Vegas is a burst of glittering hotels and seedy wedding chapels, a mirage-like city rising improbably from the Mojave Desert. The Americans who live in Las Vegas know the city as a destination for the middle class: Valets and cocktail waitresses become homeowners. Lately though, Las Vegas — like much of the United States — has become more expensive. People from California and other expensive states are moving to Nevada, driving up home prices even further. Though they have dipped slightly over the past year, rents in Las Vegas are still roughly 35 percent higher than in December 2019, before the pandemic, according to data from Zillow.

British startup carrier Global Airlines said on Friday that it had fully acquired an Airbus A380 jet previously owned by China Southern Airlines. MSN 120, however, is not the same plane that Global said it acquired back in May 2023. Following the purchase of MSN 120, Global expects to acquire three more A380s and hopefully launch commercial flights "later this year," it said. "The renaissance of the A380 is really the focus of Global Airlines," HiFly CCO Richard Stephenson said in a December video posted by Global. BEIRUT (AP) — A drone attack on a base housing U.S. troops in eastern Syria killed six allied Kurdish fighters late Sunday, in the first significant attack in Syria or Iraq since the U.S. launched retaliatory strikes over the weekend against Iran-backed militias that have been targeting its forces in the region. The U.S.-backed, Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces said Monday the attack hit a training ground at al-Omar base in Syria’s eastern province of Deir el-Zour and accused “Syrian regime-backed mercenaries” of carrying out the attack. In late January, a drone attack by the same group killed three U.S. troops and wounded dozens more at a desert base in Jordan. The U.S. military launched dozens of retaliatory strikes targeting Iran-backed militant groups in western Iraq and eastern Syria and also struck the Houthis in Yemen. The attack late Sunday came two days after the U.S. military carried out strikes against militant targets linked to Iran in Syria and Iraq.

Before the pandemic brought everyday life to a halt, Joe Kiele supported himself through the industry that dominates Nevada’s economy. Four years later, Mr. Kiele, 49, remains in Reno, yet he now spends his workday inside a factory. In place of worrying about the doneness of a customer’s rib-eye, he trains people on the proper handling of industrial chemicals. It extracts critical minerals like nickel, lithium, copper and cobalt, and uses them to manufacture components for electric vehicle batteries. In recent years, they have tried to secure investment from companies engaged in the transition toward green energy.

Houthi leaders dismissed the U.S. and U.K. strikes on Saturday and vowed to continue their Red Sea attacks until Israel ends its military operations in Gaza. Remember I used to say: ‘Don’t do it, but if you do it, keep the oil.’”Facts First: Trump’s claim that he said “Don’t do it” is false; the claim was debunked eight years ago. In reality, Trump did not publicly express opposition to the March 2003 invasion of Iraq before it occurred. In his 2000 book, “The America We Deserve,” Trump argued a military strike on Iraq might be necessary; when radio host Howard Stern asked Trump in September 2002 whether he is “for invading Iraq,” Trump responded, “Yeah, I guess so. Trump claimed on Fox, as he has before, that Iran “called me” to let him know of its plan to deliberately miss. Trump has provided no substantiation for the claim that Iran called him to telegraph the strike and offer reassurance.

BEIRUT (AP) — The U.S. military has launched strikes on dozens of sites manned by Iran-backed fighters in western Iraq and eastern Syria in retaliation for a drone strike in Jordan in late January that killed three U.S. service members and wounded dozens. Now I know the winter season is the best time to visit, mostly because of the pleasant weather. Summer in Dubai is supposedly brutal so visiting during the winter season is the move. When I went in January 2022, the temperature ranged from 75 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit without any humidity. The temperature was also perfect when I stayed in the city and went to the desert. There was a slight breeze by the sea and marina, but nothing that required a jacket during the day.
