Instead, it will explore the technology developed by Dual Fluid Energy Inc. to address the need for cleaner sources of energy. Much of the country's electricity comes from hydropower and diesel plants, according to the Rwanda Energy Group, and only about 68% of people have access to electricity. The CEO of the Rwanda Atomic Energy Board, Fidel Ndahayo, said the deal is part of a strategy of partnerships with startup companies developing small modular nuclear reactor technologies. “The Dual Fluid technology has nuclear safety design features that make it accident-free," Ndahayo asserted in the statement. “Living near a nuclear energy plant is like living near a nuclear bomb which can explode and cause more damages," The New Times reported.

HOUSTON, Sept 12 (Reuters) - U.S. oil major Chevron Corp (CVX.N) on Tuesday said it has acquired a majority stake in the world's largest proposed storage facility for hydrogen from renewable energy. U.S. majors Chevron and Exxon Mobil (XOM.N) are rushing to lower production costs and bring scale to the technology as part of their lower carbon fuel strategy. Chevron wants to develop "a large-scale, hydrogen platform that provides affordable, reliable, ever-cleaner energy,” said Austin Knight, vice president of hydrogen, Chevron New Energies. Hydrogen can also be used to store energy and used to adjust seasonal supply and demand needs in power grids. It is spending an average of $1.25 billion per year through 2028 to reduce its own emissions and expand lower carbon fuels including hydrogen.

Artificial intelligence can help tackle climate change, but to fulfill that promise companies need to find a way to limit AI’s own climate impact. Alphabet’s Google and American Airlines used AI to help planes create fewer vapor trails, which contribute to global warming. For many companies using AI there are both positive and negative effects on their carbon emissions and water use. In the U.S., where there is no central electric grid, training models in one state versus another can have a significant impact on carbon emissions. A Google data center in Oregon.

"Once the missing information is supplied by the parties, the clock is re-started and the deadline for the Commission's decision is then adjusted accordingly." The EU competition watchdog's previous deadline for its decision on the deal was Dec. 13. It has warned Amazon that the deal may reduce competition in robot vacuum cleaners and also reinforce the U.S. company's dominant position as an online marketplace provider.

UK commits $2 billion to UN-backed climate fund

Sept 9 (Reuters) - Britain will commit to provide $2 billion to the Green Climate Fund (GCF) to help developing countries cope with climate change, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said on Sunday at the G20 Leaders Summit in New Delhi. The pledge would be the biggest single funding commitment the UK has made to date to help the world tackle climate change, a government statement said. Britain has committed to spend 11.6 billion pounds ($14.46 billion) on international climate finance between 2021 and 2026. Government officials calculated it would have to spend 83% of the total aid budget on the international climate fund to meet the 11.6 billion pound target by 2026. It said $5.8-5.9 trillion is required by developing countries before 2030, in particular for their needs to implement their emission targets.

Q: I’ve lived in a rent-stabilized apartment in Hudson Heights for almost seven years and have no real complaints except for one thing: The windows are absolutely filthy! I called the management company to see if it has a preferred window-cleaning service, to no avail. I am on the third floor and cannot clean the windows, because they are old and do not open into the apartment. A: There is nothing explicit in the law that requires the landlord to clean your windows. But that doesn’t mean the dirty windows aren’t posing health hazards that the city must take seriously.

At the IAA motor show in Munich this week, there were a handful of small vehicles on display. They resembled the so-called microcars or "bubble cars" from several decades ago — like the Italian-designed Isetta, which was first produced in the mid-1950s. Another car on display at IAA was the Yoyo, a car from Italian-Chinese start-up XEV.

The 57-year-old's death in hospital was announced in late August - just as his trade union was ratifying a deal with UPS on improved heat protections. In a statement to local media, UPS (UPS.N) said it was cooperating with the authorities as they investigated the cause of death. "We train our people to recognize the symptoms of heat stress, and we respond immediately to any request for help," it said. Many European and other usually temperate countries still have no laws establishing maximum work temperatures. "Climate change is such a paradigm shift that all of us need to rethink these legacy economic assumptions," said NELP's Christman.

The adherents of the "Yes In My Backyard," or YIMBY, movement believe that America's housing crisis comes down to the fundamental tension between supply and demand. Today, nearly 75% of residentially-zoned land in the US is restricted to single-family housing — detached homes designed for one family. Folks are like, 'Oh, we're in a housing crisis for the very first time. Ground zero for the modern YIMBY movement was California, where sky-high home prices forced people to reconsider their attitudes toward development. The city didn't allow new multiunit buildings to be taller or wider than the single-family homes they replaced, making construction less financially attractive to developers.

Renewable energy is more reliable but its promise for the region still remains largely unmet. Most households have depended on gasoline generators for power, but recently the government removed a gasoline subsidy, prompting increased interest in solar power, according to dealers. The Nigerian government has not announced incentives to promote solar energy, such as reducing import taxes on solar equipment as demanded by dealers. “The problem was affordability, but now customers can pay installments over a period of 18 months,” said Tunde Oladipupo, an agent for Sun King, a solar power company. Another example of this shift is the Ford vehicle assembly plant in Silverton, Pretoria, which currently sources over 35% of its electricity from solar power.

Biodiversity credits could be key to funding the conservation of the Earth’s ecosystems, but setting up a functioning market to buy and sell these payment tokens won’t be easy. The World Economic Forum is working on bringing together stakeholders, but admits that a scaled-up market is still some way in the future. It follows the lead of so-called voluntary carbon credits that allow firms to buy credits to offset their own emissions. Those global carbon credit markets are now worth some $2 billion, up from $200 million five years ago, according to environmental-finance data provider Ecosystem Marketplace. “I feel a bit of ‘carbon envy’ when I look at the carbon markets,” Cornell’s Tobin said, noting that biodiversity markets lack a universal metric that can apply to every project, unlike carbon markets where each credit represents one metric ton of carbon dioxide.

Sand dredging is 'sterilising' ocean floor, UN warns

REUTERS/Ann Wang/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsGENEVA, Sept 5 (Reuters) - Around 6 billion tons of marine sand is being dug up each year in a growing practice that a U.N. agency said is unsustainable and can wipe out local marine life irreversibly. The findings from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) coincide with the launch of a new platform 'Marine Sand Watch' backed by funding from the Swiss government that monitors dredging activities using marine tracking and artificial intelligence. "The amount of sand we are withdrawing from the environment is considerable and has a large impact," UNEP's Pascal Peduzzi told a Geneva press briefing. In some cases, companies remove all the sand to the bedrock, meaning that "life may never recover", Peduzzi added. China, the Netherlands, the United States and Belgium are among the countries most active in the sector, he said.

Last summer, two data centers in London experienced heatwave-linked failures, with the incident affecting clinical IT systems at a number of hospitals. Data centers have become "a very important aspect of running entire business models, and even our day-to-day lives. Losing the information processed by data centers would be detrimental not only to companies and individuals, but also governments and society as a whole. This puts the firms that develop and operate data centers in a tricky position, not least because today's facilities are resource hungry. Companies can deploy a range of innovations to put these metrics at the core of tomorrow's data centers.

The first time Mike Parr, president of the American Bird Conservancy, saw one, it was feeding on blossoms of a lemon tree in California. These tiny creatures are one of 70 bird species on the “Tipping Point” list that will lose another fifty percent of their populations in the same time frame if conservation doesn’t improve. You can create more habitat for birds by planting native species and not overly tidying your yard. They kill an estimated 2.4 billion birds every year in the US alone, according to the American Bird Conservancy. You can also help fight for the survival of bird species by donating to these groups: American Bird Conservancy, National Audubon Society and International Bird Rescue.

If oil vanished today, these and many other vital products and services that use oil or its derivatives would vanish too. The World Energy Report for 2022, published by the UK-based Energy Institute and consulting firms KPMG and Kearney, noted that fossil fuels constituted 82% of global energy in 2022. This is comparable to OPEC's latest world oil outlook and represents a similar level to 30 years ago. The bottom line is that it is possible to invest heavily in renewables while continuing to produce the oil the world needs today and in the coming decades. Similarly, in the EU, vehicles using petrol or diesel still accounted for around half of all car sales in 2022.
