The Federal Trade Commission on Wednesday announced a crackdown on what the regulator called "deceptive AI claims and schemes" by three business opportunity ventures and two companies, including the legal services firm DoNotPay. "Using AI tools to trick, mislead, or defraud people is illegal," FTC Chair Lina Khan said in a statement. "The FTC's enforcement actions make clear that there is no AI exemption from the laws on the book," Khan said. In a complaint, the FTC said that DoNotPay, which touted its AI service as "the world's first robot lawyer," failed to live up to that claim. "Since about 2023, Defendants' deceptive sales pitch has said their business model is powered by artificial intelligence ("AI")," the suit says.

Privacy policies say the customer is responsibleExperts agree that car rental companies need to start implementing best practices to better protect customers. Despite this, many rental companies lag in applying adequate protections. When you read those car rental agreements, they say you leave the data in the car, it's your problem.

Read previewThere's a 70% chance the US economy is either in a recession or headed toward one in the months ahead, according to Bloomberg Economics Chief US Economist Anna Wong. The one that stands out most to Wong is the much-talked-about sustained rise in the unemployment rate. "Initially, in all the recessions, this is how the unemployment rate tends to rise," she said. Another key metric economists watch to judge whether the economy is in recession is consumer spending, which makes up around two-thirds of GDP in the US. LendingTreeWong believes wealthier Americans are spending due to the wealth effect, where high asset prices boost consumer confidence and fuel spending.

The antitrust suit is one of several major actions taken by the Justice Department recently. It also comes just three years after the Justice Department sued to block Visa from merging with financial technology startup Plaid. According to the new complaint against Visa, which was filed in federal court in New York, more than 60% of debit transactions in the country take place on Visa’s debit network. Fed rates not only set short-term borrowing costs for banks, but they also help determine mortgage, auto loan and credit card rates. According to the firm, shares of a few major discount retailers should outperform if middle-income consumers see higher levels of disposable income. Shares of Home Depot and Lowe's are up roughly 12.9% and 17.2% this year, respectively, as the prospect of lower interest rates boosts consumer sentiment. Tech products seller Best Buy could also get a boost from improved middle-income consumer sentiment, Telsey forecasts. If the rate-cutting cycle boosts sentiment among higher-end consumers, Telsey expects consumer retail names such as Williams-Sonoma and German sandal company Birkenstock to outperform.

New York CNN —In 2017, adult party game Cards Against Humanity bought land on the US-Mexico border to meddle with former President Donald Trump’s border wall. Now it’s suing over that land after another controversial billionaire has allegedly moved in without permission. Chicago-based Cards Against Humanity LLC, the publisher of the popular card game, filed a $15 million civil lawsuit Thursday against Elon Musk’s SpaceX over alleged trespassing on its lot in Cameron County, Texas. While the Cards Against Humanity’s land was vacant when purchased, the lawsuit claimed SpaceX began encroaching on its property, which is located just three miles away from SpaceX’s Starbase launch facility. The lawsuit claimed by allowing Musk’s company “to essentially steal the Property from CAH without remorse or even explanation,” CAH’s reputation with its supporters would be damaged.
