I like to stock up on Red Isle potatoes. I like to roast Red Isle potatoes for breakfast. Rachel MacPhersonPotatoes are a family favorite and we eat them mashed, roasted, or baked or put them in soups or curries. They're a filling, nutrient-dense carbohydrate that keeps my family full and energized. The 15-pound bag of potatoes lasts us about a month and costs $6.50, or about $1.60 per week.

Some are sentenced to hard labor and forced to work – or face punishment – and are sometimes paid pennies an hour or nothing at all. While prison labor seeps into the supply chains of some companies through third-party suppliers without them knowing, others buy direct. The AP reached out for comment to the companies it identified as having connections to prison labor, but most did not respond. Corrections officials and other proponents note that not all work is forced and that prison jobs save taxpayers money. They also aren’t learning skills that will help them when they are released,” said law professor Andrea Armstrong, an expert on prison labor at Loyola University New Orleans.

It's ironic: We are at a moment where supply of money and demand for goods are intersecting. We have two markets: the Treasury market and the equity market, with the first more powerful than the second, even if we can't tell that in the scrum of earnings announcements. If the Fed signals more rate cuts, then we will be set up for higher stock prices if the companies deliver good earnings. The possibility of higher earnings so far has been controlled by supply and demand and the disinflation it is breeding, which may continue this week. Hence the power of their earnings to generate the mask of a higher market price-to-earnings ratio.

Among the most broadly played investment "factors" — including value, momentum, low volatility, dividend yield — quality has dominated the market, the representative iShares MSCI USA Quality ETF (QUAL) up 25% in the past year, compared to 13% for S & P 500 value and less than 5% for the equal-weighted S & P 500. Even within industry sectors, the stocks with higher quality scores have sped ahead ( Costco in retail, WW Grainger in industrials, etc.). The quality label is based on strong balance sheets, high and steady profit margins, consistency of earnings growth and the like. Sure, there are multi-year secular growth stories animating the AI innovators and weight-loss-drug developers, but most quality stocks stand out for steadiness. Any give-back of the leading quality growth names wouldn't be easily absorbed by the broader market.

Inflation is cooling overall, but food prices have been more stubborn. I went to three stores to see where I could find the best prices for my family of four. Walmart CEO Doug McMillon said food prices had not recovered in 2023 as much as other areas, during an interview with CNBC's "Squawk on the Street" on December 6. Meanwhile, HEB and Walmart were nearly identical, at about $73, and several items were priced precisely the same. AdvertisementHere's how some of the grocery prices compare at the three stores.

I'll describe how options traders will bet the bottom is in and the levels they may find attractive to do so. Tesla's margins of nearly 11% are twice those of the 2 biggest U.S. automakers, but a bear will point out that Porsche margins are 13%. Even still, it's not clear that the legacy automakers can compete long term with Tesla or China's BYD. Read previewSelf-checkout might make shoppers feel less loyal to a store, according to new research. One asked shoppers about their recent grocery-buying habits, including whether they used a self-checkout kiosk or were rung up by a human employee. In it, some shoppers read a short passage about how doing something themselves is rewarding before paying for groceries using self-checkout. But technology aimed at catching shoplifters using self-checkout has caused confrontations between Walmart employees and innocent customers, Business Insider reported. Do you work at a store with self-checkout and have a story idea to share?

Swedish fintech firm Klarna is launching a monthly subscription plan in the U.S. to lock in its heaviest users ahead of an expected initial public offering this year, the company told CNBC. Buy now, pay later services such as Klarna and Affirm have surged in popularity in recent years as more Americans rely on a new, fintech-enabled form of credit. When Klarna users shop outside the firm's network of 500,000 retailers — at places such as Walmart, Target, Amazon and Costco — they pay $1 to $2 in transaction fees. "The main proposition of Klarna Plus right now is that you don't pay any service fees," Sandstrom said. "So if you love Klarna and if you love shopping at Target and Walmart, it makes a ton of sense financially."

The study comes as some companies remove self-checkout machines and others adjust their self-checkout operations. Regular checkout also makes customers feel that they are receiving the service they are entitled to as customers of that store, the study found. “The saved effort during the checkout process and the customers’ sense of entitlement explain the effect of checkout type on customer loyalty,” the study said. Self-checkout, on the other hand, shifts the work to customers, making them feel less rewarded, the study found. At a handful of stores, Target has restricted self-checkout to customers buying 10 items or fewer.

As a food blogger, I love to make various Costco appetizers, sides, and entrées in the air fryer. I've found a myriad of ways to prepare easy and delicious Costco appetizers, sides, and entrées in the air fryer. But with the air fryer, they can be ready in less than 10 minutes with no additional bowls, pots, or pans to clean. I like to use the Giovanni Rana 3 Cheese Ravioli to make a similar version in the air fryer. Heat the spring rolls in the air fryer at 390 degrees Fahrenheit for 10 minutes and flip halfway through.

The promise of 2% cash back with Costco's Executive membership can be tempting, but it might not be worth the upcharge. They take a look at your profile and tell you that you're a good candidate for the Costco Executive membership. On paper, the $120 Executive Membership sounds like a great deal. Calculating if the $120 Executive Membership is worth the upcharge is simple. But if your annual spend regularly tops $3,000, you're better off with the Executive Membership.

CNN —As cases of salmonella infections linked to recalled charcuterie meats double, the US Centers of Disease Control and Prevention expanded its warning in a new food safety alert on Thursday. That’s almost double the cases from the last update on January 5th where 24 illnesses and five hospitalizations had been reported in 14 states. The CDC cautions that the true number of illnesses is most likely higher and could also be in present in other states. The warning is now also being expanded beyond one specific lot number of Busseto brand Charcuterie Sampler. Fratelli Beretta recalled more than 11,000 pounds of the charcuterie meat products earlier this month, but only one specific lot code.
