Years of work on Wall Street to pick up the pace of trading will be put to the test this week. Starting Tuesday, trades of stocks and several other securities will need to be settled by the end of the next business day. This so-called "T+1 settlement" is an acceleration of the previous process, which allowed for two business days. The latest change comes after the GameStop mania in 2021 put the settlement process under closer scrutiny. There was also increased instances of "failure to deliver," or trades where settlement did not occur, during that period.

I.E.D.”When I served in Iraq, I’d hear those words on the radio, and my heart would freeze. It meant death. In the civilian world, death interrupts our lives — we drop everything to rush to the side of a dying relative or friend. In war, death interrupts nothing. Sales of newly built homes dropped 4.7% in April compared with March, and dropped a larger 7.7% from the prior year, the U.S. Census said Thursday. Higher mortgage rates are clearly hampering sales. Some of that is due to the mix of homes selling, which is mostly on the higher end of the market. Those buyers are not as influenced by mortgage rates, as they often use all cash. The big production builders have been buying down mortgage rates to help boost sales, but they are able to do that because of their size.

Opinion | What Does Hollywood Owe Its Jewish Founders?
  + stars: | 2024-05-23 | by ( Pamela Paul | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
The Jews who founded Hollywood — and make no mistake, the big studio heads were overwhelmingly Jewish — shared several things: ambition, creative vision and killer business instincts. But more than anything else, the men who were the driving forces behind Paramount, 20th Century Fox, Warner Brothers, Universal, Columbia and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer shared a very 20th-century sense of being Jewish in America. They were assimilationists who considered themselves American above all else and who molded Hollywood to reflect and shape their American ideals. Beyond a few brief mentions, including Billy Wilder fleeing Nazi Germany, a photo of the MGM mogul and academy founder Louis B. Mayer looming over Judy Garland, and a few scoundrels in an exhibit on #MeToo, Jews were absent. Jewish studio heads, business leaders and actors were almost entirely shut out, an oversight that led to much outcry.
