Often it is unclear exactly which acts violate public order and morality, according to the U.S. State Department’s most recent report on human rights, as well as a report by Human Rights Watch and other free speech and human rights organizations. Um Fahad, the social media influencer who was dancing on her son’s birthday, said she still did not understand why she was arrested and imprisoned. In 2021, the federal court stripped commissioners of their immunity, making them vulnerable to financially crippling lawsuits from any politician, government ministry or party. That curbed the commission’s efforts to hold to account Iraqi government officials or institutions for human rights violations under Iraqi and international law. Officials note accurately that when government critics are pursued in court, in the majority of cases they eventually prevail.

July 16 (Reuters) - Alzheimer's disease experts are revamping the way doctors diagnose patients with the progressive brain disorder - the most common type of dementia - adopting a seven-point rating scale based on cognitive and biological changes in the patient. "Stage 1a is really the beginning of evidence that someone has the disease," Jack said. The new scale also includes a Stage 0 for people who carry genes that guarantee they will develop Alzheimer's. Noting the new system's similarity to cancer stages, Jack said, "There's no such thing as mild breast cancer. Jack also noted that many other conditions can cause dementia but not all dementia is Alzheimer's disease.

A new study shows human and dog cancers share a high degree of genetic overlap. The study comes from a company that uses genetic information and AI to find biologic cancer treatments. A massive new database of genetic information from dog tumors aims to use what we know about dog cancer to better treat it in humans. She wants to use AI to analyze the database's genetic information to match a dog's tumor to the type of treatment that's most effective. Using FidoCure, they selected dogs with a type of cancer that genetically mirrored human breast cancer.

July 13 (Reuters) - The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Thursday approved the first over-the-counter contraceptive pill, paving the way for millions of women in the country to purchase birth control without prescription. Perrigo will next week share its pricing plan for the pill, which will be available in stores and online in the first quarter of next year. Women should take a progestin-only pill within the same three hours every day to avoid pregnancy. The National Catholic Bioethics Center and other groups have opposed making Opill available without prescription, saying physicians should be involved in health decisions, especially for teenagers, along with parental supervision, to avoid harm. Perrigo gained the daily-use pill first through its $2.13 billion acquisition of Paris-based HRA Pharma in 2021.

CNN —The US Food and Drug Administration on Thursday approved the birth control pill Opill to be available over-the-counter — the first nonprescription birth control pill in the United States. Opill is expected to be available over-the-counter in stores by the end of March 2024. The FDA has faced pressure to allow Opill to go over-the-counter from lawmakers as well as health care providers. A recent study showed that it has become harder for women to access reproductive health care services more broadly — such as routine screenings and birth control — in recent years. About 45% of women experienced at least one barrier to reproductive health care services in 2021, up 10% from 2017.

The FDA approved the first over-the-counter birth control pill. Advocates pushed for expanding birth control access, especially with more restrictions on abortion. U.S. officials have approved the first over-the-counter birth control pill, which will let American women and girls buy contraceptive medication from a retail store without a prescription. But women's health advocates hope the decision will pave the way for more over-the-counter birth control options and, eventually, for abortion pills to do the same. Newer birth control pills typically combine two hormones, estrogen and progestin, which can help make periods lighter and more regular.

CNN —Clinical overuse of marijuana is linked to a variety of complications after major elective surgery, including blood clots, stroke, breathing difficulties, kidney issues and even death, a new study found. Compared with people who were not overly dependent or addicted to marijuana, those with cannabis use disorder were more likely to suffer complications from those surgeries. The most significant associations were for blockages of coronary arteries, stroke, injury to the kidneys, blood clots, breathing complications, infection and in-hospital death, the study found. People with cannabis use disorder also stayed in the hospital longer and had higher hospital bills than people without the disorder. “In the context of increasing cannabis use rates, our findings support preoperative screening for cannabis use disorder,” the authors wrote.

Families can expect to pay $67.73 for a party of 10, down 3% from last year’s record high, according to a survey from the American Farm Bureau Federation. Families are still feeling the pinch of high inflation along with other factors keeping prices high,” said Roger Cryan, chief economist at the American Farm Bureau Federation. This year’s cookout cost is the second highest on record, following last year’s record setting number — $69.68 for a party of 10. The American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF), has been conducting the survey since 2013. Potato prices also rose because of poor growing weather, the Farm Bureau said.

The nation’s monthslong shortage of highly potent cancer drugs is grinding on, forcing patients and their doctors to face even grimmer realities than those cancer typically presents. Thousands of patients like Mr. Shepard have been confronting gut-wrenching options, delays in treatment and potentially bleaker futures. Oncologists are concerned that the alternatives to two crucial chemotherapy drugs are far less effective in treating certain cancers, and are sometimes more toxic. Some companies that sell the medications are projecting that the shortage will last through the fall or later. So far, neither a group of experts organized by the Biden administration nor prominent medical organizations have found a way to avoid rationing the crucial chemo drugs.

New rules imposed in February force infant formula makers to invest heavily to re-make, test, certify and re-register their products for China, before potentially conducting new marketing campaigns. “The new standard requires higher product quality as well as stronger manufacturing techniques which are expected to eliminate many small-to-medium-size players,” said Quinn Mai, analyst at Euromonitor International, which estimates China’s infant formula market will fall 12.5% to $21 billion by 2025 due to shrinking demand. China's National Health Commission (NHC) cited infant safety when announcing the latest rules. Celia Ning, director at the nutrition research institute of formula maker Junlebao, said the registration process could "easily" take a year. Another, Fonterra (FCG.NZ), said it was progressing through the re-registration process but that infant formula made up a relatively small part of its China business, with declining birth rates and regulation driving industry consolidation.
