CNN —Kamala Harris has the support of enough Democratic delegates to win the party’s nomination for president, according to CNN’s delegate estimate. Harris crossed the threshold amid a wave of endorsements from state delegations Monday evening. CNN’s count comes from public statements of support from delegates and state delegations, CNN reporting and conversations with delegates. Endorsements from state delegations are counted as unanimous support for Harris absent other information. I look forward to formally accepting the nomination soon,” Harris said in a statement from her campaign late Monday.

Gavin Newsom of California, had previously said he would not challenge Ms. Harris. He often rambles incoherently in interviews and at campaign rallies and has confused names, dates and facts just as Mr. Biden has. Mr. Biden consistently maintained that his experience was an advantage, enabling him to pass landmark legislation and manage foreign policy crises. He maintained that he was the Democrat best equipped to defeat Mr. Trump given that he did so in 2020. On the international front, Mr. Biden revitalized international alliances that frayed under Mr. Trump, rallying much of the world to stand against Russia’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine.

A spokesperson for the Biden campaign declined to comment on this story, and a Democratic National Committee spokesperson did not respond to a request for comment. Two wealthy donors told BI that they've lost faith in the Biden campaign just in the past month and that a new, younger Democratic nominee is needed to energize the base. Venezuela could be on the cusp of a historic return to democracy, a shift that would reshape Latin America and pave the way for millions of Venezuelans who have fled repression and economic collapse to return home. But the same roadblock stands in the way of a free and fair election that has been there for the past decade: President Nicolás Maduro. The nation’s democracy has withered on his watch, along with its economy. It is an opportunity that won’t come around again anytime soon, and the window to seize it is rapidly closing. Without it, the likely outcome of this month’s vote will be more repression, more forced migration and more suffering.

By the time that former President Donald J. Trump joined TikTok in June, conservative content was flourishing on the social media platform, known for its grip on young people. That environment has had an effect on many voters, particularly members of Generation Z, for whom Mr. Trump has been a consistent presence on presidential ballots since they became eligible to vote. The appetite for conservative-leaning content online inspired CJ Pearson, 21 and a chairman of the Republican National Committee’s Youth Advisory Council, to develop a digital initiative called Influence America. “People follow people,” said Mr. Pearson, a veteran of the youth-focused conservative platform PragerU. “They don’t follow organizations; they don’t follow parties.”

US President Joe Biden steps off Air Force One as he arrives at Hagerstown Regional Airport in Hagerstown, Maryland, June 20, 2024, on his way to Camp David. Those delegates are set to vote for their presidential nominee in a virtual roll call in early August, before the Democratic National Convention. If Biden ends his campaign before voting begins, the pledged delegates could cast their ballots for a new candidate. According to the DNC rules, If no candidate won a majority on that first ballot, then the more than 700 "superdelegates" could join in subsequent votes. The voting would then continue until one candidate won a simple majority of delegates.

There have been no celebrations of Jan. 6 rioters and no talk of election “mules” smuggling ballots. There, in so-called media row, the hive of right-wing activists galvanized by former President Donald J. Trump’s lies about the 2020 election was buzzing. Mike Lindell, the pillow company founder who is one of the most prominent promoters of conspiracy theories about election fraud, gave interviews about rigged voting machines. Rudolph W. Giuliani, Mr. Trump’s leading lawyer in the effort to subvert the 2020 election, held court nearby. Elon Musk is going all-in on Donald Trump

New York CNN —At first glance Elon Musk and Donald Trump wouldn’t seem to be natural allies. Musk has given money to candidates from both parties in the past, including $5,000 to Barack Obama in April of 2011. Musk quit two White House business councils he served on early in 2017 after Trump announced America would withdraw from Paris climate accord. But for the last several years Musk has repeatedly shown support for Trump – or opposition to President Joe Biden. Musk recently tweeted the EV subsidies passed under Biden actually helped its rivals more than Tesla.

Americans received a sobering reminder on Saturday of the threat that political violence poses to our democracy. There is much we don’t know yet about the gunman and the shooting, which is being investigated as an attempted assassination. Violence is antithetical to democracy. Ballots, not bullets, should always be the means by which Americans work through their differences. Saturday’s attack should not be taken as a provocation or a justification.

Most people don’t use mail the way they used to – if they send out mail at all. And, most of all, businesses still depend on the mail to help them reach customers and keep the economy going. A history older than AmericaThe postal service and the United States have grown side by side since before the country’s birth – quite literally. The band The Postal Service was an indie-pop darling near the turn of the century. While stamp prices have doubled in that time, most experts point the finger at technology instead.

If current trends continue, Mr. Trump could rack up one of the most decisive presidential victories since 2008. The Biden campaign hoped to change this political dynamic by calling for a historic early debate in June. Of all the battleground states, Mr. Biden had been performing best in Wisconsin. However, in two polls released this week, Mr. Trump has pulled ahead of Mr. Biden. Republicans clearly understand that these three battleground states are Mr. Biden’s only remaining path to 270 electoral votes.

The case for a Biden comeback always presumed that voters would mostly cast their ballots based on their views about Donald J. Trump. So long as that’s true, the path to a Biden comeback will be long and arduous. The best that can be said for Mr. Biden is that the worst of the post-debate crisis might — might — be over. Even skeptics like Jerry Nadler, who had reportedly told his colleagues that Mr. Biden should end his candidacy, appeared newly resigned to Mr. Biden’s renomination. And all of this follows a steady stream of Democrats who affirmed their support for Mr. Biden on Monday, including Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

CNN —Christina Bobb, the indicted RNC official and former One America News host, is dodging a deposition in a 2020-related defamation lawsuit, according to Dominion Voting Systems, which is battling her in court. Lawyers for Dominion said a filing Monday that Bobb’s lawyers didn’t answer their emails in March and May when they tried to schedule Bobb’s deposition. After then-President Donald Trump lost the 2020 election, Bobb used her on-air role at OAN to repeatedly promote baseless conspiracy theories about the results being rigged, including by Dominion software. After a shakeup at the RNC earlier this year, Bobb and other Trump loyalists assumed top leadership posts, with Bobb focusing on so-called “election integrity” efforts. These efforts include new lawsuits aimed at tightening the rules regarding mail-in ballots and restricting the availability of ballot drop boxes.

Global elections in 2024: A guide in maps and charts

CNN —As the presidential race in the United States heats up, many other countries around the world are also conducting pivotal elections in 2024. Here’s a closer look at the countries holding elections, in maps and charts. The election took 44 days, with more than one million polling stations, and its voters represented about 12% of the world’s population. In recent European Parliament elections, far-right parties performed well — with the National Rally gaining seven seats — and were particularly popular with young people. In 2023, 76% of Americans aged 18 to 29 said that Biden, 81, is too old to run for president, according to an Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research poll.

When President Emmanuel Macron defended his decision last month to call snap legislative elections, he argued repeatedly that France needed a “clarification” of its political situation. But on Monday, after the French cast their final ballots, the situation was anything but clear. A nationwide vote for the 577 seats in the National Assembly, the country’s more powerful house of Parliament, has not produced a working majority. Three large blocs have emerged from the elections — none big enough to govern alone, all of them possibly too antagonistic to work together. None has reached the threshold for an absolute majority, 289 seats, which would enable them to form a government that could survive no-confidence votes by their rivals.

And there's another challenge: The latest Journal survey showed Trump winning 95% of the voters who supported him in 2020. So he'll have to convince swaths of Democratic voters who are skeptical of his effectiveness to also cast ballots for him this fall.

4 Takeaways From Iran’s Presidential Runoff
  + stars: | 2024-07-06 | by ( Lynsey Chutel | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
The victory of reformist candidate Masoud Pezeshkian in Iran’s presidential runoff signals a shift from the government of Ebrahim Raisi, a conservative Shiite Muslim cleric and the preceding president who was killed in a helicopter crash in May. Mr. Pezeshkian, a 69-year-old cardiac surgeon who served as a lawmaker in previous reformist governments and as health minister, beat the hard-line conservative candidate Saeed Jalili in Friday’s runoff, the government announced on Saturday. A stark choice spurred higher voter turnoutThe runoff presented a political choice stark enough to galvanize Iranians who had boycotted the first round of elections. Turnout in the first round was about 40 percent, continuing a downward trend seen in recent parliamentary elections. Faced with candidates who represented radically different visions for Iran’s future, many voters who had stayed away from the polls during the first round decided to cast their ballots in the runoff.

The results could force President Emmanuel Macron to govern alongside far-right opponents or usher in chronic political instability weeks before the Paris Summer Olympics. Most polls close at 6 p.m. local time on Sunday, or as late as 8 p.m. in larger cities. The first round of voting was dominated by the nationalist, anti-immigration National Rally party. An alliance of left-wing parties called the New Popular Front came in a strong second, while Mr. Macron’s party and its allies came in third.
