Powdered drink mixes that are widely promoted as “toddler milks” for older babies and children up to age 3 are unregulated, unnecessary and “nutritionally incomplete,” the American Academy of Pediatrics warned Friday. Also, toddler drinks are different than medical formulas prescribed for specific conditions, such as heart disease or problems digesting certain foods. Fuchs and other experts point to the lack of common standards for toddler milks, which means the ingredients vary widely among brands. The group also wants requirements to ensure the products are not linked to regulated infant formula or sold next to formula. A health group petitioned the FDA in 2020 to regulate toddler milks, but the agency is still reviewing the request.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) said the Marriott Crystal Gateway hotel (MAR.O) in Arlington, Virginia, which has hosted its gathering for more than 10 years, told the group it had received threats. "Anonymous callers have threatened to plant bombs in the hotel's parking garage, kill specific hotel staff in their homes, and storm the hotel in a repeat of the Jan. 6th attack on the U.S. Capitol if the events moved forward," CAIR said Thursday night. Marriott did not confirm specific threats. "Please join ZOA in calling Marriott to demand that they cancel this dangerous CAIR event," the ZOA said in an "action alert" on Thursday. So, when Kelly Henchel’s child was close to reaching toddler age in 1998, she wanted to know more about this new toddler milk product. Toddler milk is not the same as infant milk, Ferry said, nor is it necessary for this age group. Research shows many mothers — especially those of Black and Hispanic populations — believe toddler milk is more nutritious than cow’s milk, according to a May study in Nutrition Reviews. Unlike infant formula, the US Food and Drug Administration does not regulate toddler milk. Additionally, toddler milk products will not be nutritionally complete.

Walmart (WMT.N) expects revenues from its health and wellness products to increase in the second half of the year, mainly due to the popularity of weight-loss drugs. PepsiCo (PEP.O) Chief Financial Officer Hugh Johnston has said the company is "not seeing any impact" yet from the popularity of weight-loss drugs. Abbott Laboratories (ABT.N), which makes glucose monitoring products, has said that the market was overestimating the impact to its sales from growing popularity of the drugs. Abbott CEO Robert Ford has said that diabetes patients could end up using glucose monitors with the weight-loss drugs in the long term. Greg Abbott signed a law this year that removed Harris County's elections administrator and transferred the responsibility to other local officials. Democrats who lead Harris County have acknowledged issues, including limited paper ballot shortages and machine malfunctions, on Election Day last year. Republicans cheered the findings as justification for the new laws that transferred election oversight. Another new law signed by Abbott earlier this year clears the way for Nelson's office to potentially take oversight of Harris County elections. Following the 2020 election, Texas also audited elections in Harris and three other counties, which came after former President Donald Trump falsely claimed the election was stolen and pressured Abbott to review ballots.

REUTERS/Brendan McDermid/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsOct 18 (Reuters) - Abbott Laboratories (ABT.N) said the market was overestimating the hit to sales of its glucose monitoring products from growing popularity of new diabetes drugs, adding the treatments could end up boosting sales of the medical device maker. The company's shares have dropped 16% this year, mainly on concerns that new GLP-1 diabetes drugs such as Novo Nordisk's Ozempic and Eli Lilly's Mounjaro could eat into the sales of its continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) devices. Hurdles in health insurance reimbursement and pricing could, however, keep market growth for GLP-1 drugs limited to a small number of patients in the near term, Abbott CEO Robert Ford said on Wednesday. Third-quarter sales of FreeStyle Libre, Abbott's CGM device used by diabetes patients, jumped 30.5% to $1.4 billion, lifting Abbott's shares 3% in morning trade. The numbers helped Abbott's medical device sales that stood at $4.25 billion, beating analysts' estimates of $4.16 billion, according to LSEG data.

Two-year Treasury yields hit their highest since 2006 on Tuesday at 5.24% and held most of those gains overnight - while 20-year yields are hovering around 5.2% as well. [1/2] 'Yes' campaigners drive past voters lining up at a polling booth during The Voice referendum in Queanbeyan, Australia, October 14, 2023. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese misread the public mood, analysts said on Sunday, as he took responsibility for the referendum result, in which only the national capital voted "Yes" from among eight states and territories. Elected in 1996, Albanese saw the failure of the 1999 referendum for Australia to become a republic. Dutton may not try to win back these Teal seats at the next election, Kenny said, adding that almost all of Labor's rural and outer-suburban, working class seats voted "No". Former Liberal Prime Minister Tony Abbott, who will join the board of Fox Corp next month, praised Dutton's "courageous" campaign against the referendum in an interview with Sky News.

CNBC's Jim Cramer on Wednesday explained how GLP-1 drugs are influencing market action. GLP-1 drugs were initially approved to treat diabetes, but many found off-label use to help with weight loss. Popular GLP-1 drugs include Eli Lilly 's Mounjaro and Novo Nordisk 's Wegovy, the latter of which has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration for weight loss management. Even though it seems early to asses the impact of these drugs, they are already affecting stocks, Cramer said. Intuitive Surgical also saw shares slide when executives noted slowed growth in bariatric surgeries last quarter, potentially due to increased use of GLP-1 drugs.

REUTERS/Jose Luis Gonzalez/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsMEXICO CITY, Oct 9 (Reuters) - Mexico on Monday called for the U.S. government to mediate with Texas state authorities to ease inspections for cargo trucks crossing the border, as the country's president accused the Texas governor of "complicating the migration situation." State officials restarted costly, intensive cargo truck inspections last month. Texas Governor Greg Abbott has argued they are needed to stem the flow of migrants and illegal drugs into the country. The measure has held up some $1.9 billion in goods, Mexico's national cargo transport chamber said on Sunday. Along with the state-mandated inspections, cargo has been slowed by the temporary closure of U.S. federal processing at several crossings, Mexico's foreign ministry added.

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Mexico’s president said Tuesday that he rejected a U.S. request to set up migrant transit centers in Mexico. Neighboring Guatemala has set up one such center, where migrants can apply for U.S. work and refugee visas. “We have been looking at setting up sites in Mexico, because they (the United States) have asked for it,” López Obrador said. The centers are part of a larger migratory strategy aimed at reducing the large number of migrants from Latin American and the Caribbean to the United States. Abbott Laboratories CEO Robert Ford took the stage at the HLTH conference in Las Vegas on Tuesday to discuss the company's expansion into a new market: consumer wearables. For instance, Abbott produces a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) called FreeStyle Libre that patients can use to manage their diabetes. Abbott's most recent model, the FreeStyle Libre 3, can measure glucose levels in real time for up to 14 days. FreeStyle Libre alone generated more than $1.3 billion in sales for Abbott during its second quarter, according to the company's earnings report. "We always believed that we could take this platform that we developed for diabetes and expand it beyond diabetes," Ford said.
