CNN —Researchers have discovered a distant disc galaxy that has surprisingly similar characteristics to our own Milky Way, and it could change our understanding of how galaxies form. Early galaxies tend to join together and develop smoother shapes incredibly slowly, with our Milky Way taking billions of years to develop tidy structures, the researchers said. The rotation and structure of the galaxy were observed using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) telescope in northern Chile. “Finding further evidence of more evolved structures would be an exciting discovery, as it would be the most distant galaxy with such structures observed to date,” Rowland said. “ALMA also reveals details finer than earlier telescopes.”Blain said more research is needed before scientists change their understanding of galaxy formation.

The job cuts, first reported by French news agency AFP, come on top of a more than year-long efficiency review in the defense and space business, code-named ATOM. Airbus has been drawing up specific turnaround plans for its struggling Space Systems business without waiting for the outcome of recent satellite consolidation talks that include Italy's Leonardo as well as France's Thales. The Biden Administration sent a similar warning to Israeli officials in April ahead of a required report, and the U.S. ultimately determined the actions taken by Israel to improve the humanitarian situation afterward met the requirements under the law. The ministry says the total death toll in Gaza since the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Israel is more than 42,000. One year after an Army reservist perpetrated a mass shooting across Lewiston, Maine, lawyers representing survivors and families of the victims said Tuesday they are pursuing negligence claims against the federal government that could pave the way for 100 individual lawsuits. “Today marks the first step toward ensuring accountability and justice for the families and victims of the worst mass shooting in Maine history,” lawyer Benjamin Gideon of Gideon Asen LLC said in a statement. CNN —China flew a record number of fighter jets and other warplanes around Taiwan during its large-scale military drills on Monday, the island’s Defense Ministry said. No Chinese warplanes were spotted entering Taiwan’s sovereign airspace, a step that would be considered a major escalation. While not directly comparable, the spike in Chinese warplanes on Monday superseded the previous daily record in September 2023, when 103 Chinese military aircraft were detected operating around Taiwan in a 24-hour span.
