Exports were led by U.S.-bound shipments of cars and mining machinery, while China-bound shipments of steel, chips and nonferrous metal caused a double-digit decline in overall exports to China. "Going forward, it could be hard for Japan to maintain a trade surplus in a stable manner unless exports regain strength and global commodity prices keep import costs low." The overall trade numbers produced a trade surplus of 43 billion yen ($308.11 million), confounding the median estimate for a 90.1 billion yen deficit. U.S.-bound shipments, Japan's major ally, rose 11.7% year-on-year in June, led by shipments of cars, construction and mining machinery, following a 9.4% rise in the previous month. A strike could be one of the costliest in at least a century, with the impact of a 10-day strike topping $7 billion, according to one think tank. UPS pilots, who belong to a different union, would also stop flying in solidarity with the striking workers. The Teamsters have been holding "practice pickets" in major cities around the country to keep pressure on UPS. On the other hand, UPS is the largest employer of Teamsters at a time when unions are fighting to grow. "We believe an August 1 strike at UPS remains possible but not yet probable," Susquehanna analyst Bascome Majors said in a client note.

UBS says Microsoft shares are 'too attractive' not to buy

The artificial intelligence opportunity and recent underperformance of Microsoft make it hard to stay on the sidelines, UBS said. Analyst Karl Keirstead upgraded the technology stock to buy from neutral and raised his price target by $55 to $400. "We upgrade Microsoft shares to Buy from Neutral on evidence that Azure/AWS cloud infrastructure spend is beginning to stabilize after a significant deceleration over the past year," he said in a note to clients Thursday. Keirstead downgraded Microsoft early in the year, arguing that spending trends for cloud programs such as Azure and Amazon Web Services were going downhill. He argued that Azure's decline, in the case of Microsoft, could weigh on the stock.

Kyiv hopes to one day field F-16 fighter jets, and it is expecting to receive Abrams tanks soon. F-16s aren't ideal for the fight now, a US general said, but Abrams tanks will make a difference. While there are still questions about Ukraine's F-16s, Abrams tanks are definitely going to be delivered and are expected to have a significant effect on the battlefield, Sims said Thursday. US M1A1 Abrams tanks needed for training the Armed Forces of Ukraine arrive by rail at Grafenwoehr, Germany, May 14, 2023. The Abrams tanks promised to Ukraine are part of more than $41.3 billion in security assistance that the US has provided Kyiv since Russia attacked in February 2022.

Biden announced a new plan to transition borrowers back into repayment after his broad debt relief was struck down. The plan includes a 12-month "on-ramp" period and a new income-driven repayment plan. Along with the on-ramp period, Cardona also said his department has finalized a new income-driven repayment plan for borrowers. If a borrower is already enrolled in the REPAYE plan — an existing income-driven repayment plan — they will automatically be put on the SAVE plan when it becomes available. If a borrower is enrolled in an income-driven repayment plan, they can go to studentaid.gov and select the "My Aid" page, which will list their repayment plan.
