There is no security in the whole region as long as Palestinians are left outside of the equation." The Hamas attack launched from Gaza follows months of rising violence in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, with stepped-up Israeli raids, Palestinian street attacks and assaults by Jewish settlers on Palestinian villages. "Some (Arab states) unfortunately started imagining that Israel could be the gateway for America to defend their security." "I would say for certain Hamas, terrorist groups like Hamas, will not derail any such outcome. Tehran called Saturday's attack an act of self-defence by Palestinians.

An Israeli security source acknowledged Israel's security services were duped by Hamas. As a consequence, the source close to Hamas said, a crucial part of the plan was to avoid leaks. When the day came, the operation was divided into four parts, the Hamas source said, describing the various elements. The final part involved moving hostages to Gaza, mostly achieved early in the attack, the source close to Hamas said. the Israeli security source said.

It's terrible to be clinical after watching horrifying pictures and having real feelings about the tragedy in Israel this weekend. But it is difficult to believe that there will be another embargo when Israel was so clearly not the aggressor. Do you sell American stocks off of something tragic that happens in Ukraine or Israel or to any of our allies? No, it is because we have the ability — good or bad — to focus on what's existential for our country, not for Israel. "It looks quite similar to what happened at that time," said retired General Giora Eiland, a former head of Israel's National Security Council. "As we can see it, Israel was completely surprised, by a very well coordinated attack," he told a briefing with reporters. "This was an intelligence failure; it could not be otherwise," said Jonathan Panikoff, the U.S. government's former deputy national intelligence officer on the Middle East, who is now at the Atlantic Council think tank. Jerusalem and Gaza CNN —Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the country is “embarking on a long and difficult war” as it deals with an unprecedented hostage crisis after Palestinian militants launched a surprise land, sea and air attack from Gaza, killing hundreds and infiltrating into Israeli territory. In addition, thousands of troops have been deployed in southern Israel next to Gaza, which Israeli forces withdrew from in 2005. Trying to rescue all those Hamas said were now held in different locations could jeopardise their lives. Yet, protracted negotiations with Hamas over a prisoner swap would be a huge win for an arch foe of Israel. Within 24 hours, 11 Israelis, five Palestinians and a German policeman were dead after a rescue effort erupted into gunfire. Netanyahu could follow a more familiar strategy of assassinating Hamas leaders with air strikes and bombs.

The surprise attack by Hamas on Israel suggests a massive intelligence failure as the Israeli government appeared blindsided by the infiltration of Hamas fighters across the southern border and the launch of thousands of rockets. The Hamas assault by air, land and sea also raised questions as to why U.S. intelligence agencies apparently did not see it coming, experts and former intelligence officials said. U.S. officials said that if the Israelis knew an attack was imminent, they did not share it with Washington. The additional intelligence to Israel could include information gathered from drones, eavesdropping and satellites, but the officials did not elaborate. Not since 1973 has there been such a catastrophic intelligence failure in Israel," said Marc Polymeropoulous, who worked for 26 years for the CIA, where he specialized in counterterrorism, the Middle East and South Asia.

Israel's inability to anticipate the attack was a "colossal" intelligence failure, analysts say. Israel has one of the most sophisticated intelligence networks in the Middle East. AdvertisementAdvertisementIsrael was rocked by a wave of unprecedented attacks carried out by Hamas fighters on Saturday, with reports of thousands of rockets being fired into the country and gunmen roaming the streets. Observers have noted that Israel's failure to anticipate the attack, which likely took months of complex planning, is a failure of their famously sophisticated intelligence agencies. There have also been unconfirmed reports of IDF soldiers and Israeli civilians being captured by Hamas fighters and taken to Gaza.

In response to the attack, Israel launched “Operation Swords of Iron,” striking a number of targets in the Gaza strip. After Hamas seized control of Gaza, Israel and Egypt imposed a strict siege on the territory, which is ongoing. He added that it took eight hours for the Israeli military to arrive to his kibbutz and start fending off the Hamas fighters. The last time he heard from his mother-in-law was at 10:30 a.m., he said, when she called him, panicked and distraught, to say that Hamas militants had shot and killed her husband. A fortified border fence, equipped with sophisticated sensors, proved no match for the heavy explosives unleashed by Hamas militants as they burst into Israel. Other footage captured moments of terror and desperation: Hamas fighters paraded a disoriented-looking elderly woman in a golf cart down a dusty Gaza street while Palestinian crowds cheered. Witnesses told Israeli media that Hamas militants sprayed bullets into the crowd of revelers, who just moments earlier had been drinking, laughing and dancing.

Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israel, killing at least 70 people. Critics have long been warning of a security lapse as a result of internal civil unrest in Israel. They warned that protests linked to judicial reforms were impacting Israeli national security. Netanyahu's judicial reforms, which were proposed in January and eventually passed in July, seek to limit the Supreme Court's power to exercise judicial review and declare legislation unconstitutional. "This is a clear, immediate, and real danger to Israel's security," Gallant said at the time.

"Some (Arab states) unfortunately started imagining that Israel could be the gateway for America to defend their security." In the years since 1973, Egypt signed a peace treaty with Israel and several other Arab states have also since normalised ties, including some Gulf Arab states next to Saudi Arabia. Netanyahu has previously said the Palestinians should not be allowed to veto any new Israeli peace deals with Arab states. Tehran called Saturday's attack an act of self-defence by Palestinians. JERUSALEM (AP) — Without warning on Saturday, Gaza's militant Hamas rulers attacked Israel by air, land and sea. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his far-right allies were scrambling to respond to the rapidly changing events. Here are some key takeaways from the multi-pronged attack that has suddenly plunged Israel into war. In a dramatic escalation unseen in decades, Hamas also sent paragliders flying into Israel, the Israeli military said. Some political analysts have linked Hamas' attack to ongoing U.S.-brokered talks on normalization of ties between Israel and Saudi Arabia.

Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the country is at war Saturday after Palestinian militants in Gaza fired a deadly barrage of rockets and sent gunmen into Israeli territory in a major escalation of the long-running conflict between the two sides. Israel launched air strikes on Gaza in response to the attack as Netanyahu vowed to "exact a huge price from the enemy." The early-morning surprise assault is unprecedented in recent history in its scale and scope. It comes on the 50th anniversary of the 1973 War in which Arab states blitzed Israel on Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the Jewish calendar. Viewer discretion is advised.

Saturday's incident marked an unprecedented infiltration by Hamas gunmen into Israel from Gaza, and was the most serious escalation since Israel and Hamas fought a 10-day war in 2021. Israeli media reported gunbattles between bands of Palestinian fighters and security forces in towns in southern Israel. Hamas military commander Mohammad Deif announced the start of the operation in a broadcast on Hamas media, calling on Palestinians everywhere to fight. The Israeli military was aware of reports of captives, a security source said, but provided no further details. Israel's ambulance service said teams had been dispatched to areas in southern Israel near Gaza and residents were warned to stay inside.

As many knowledgeable people have pointed out, what Hamas has done is clearly an act of terrorism, no matter what your definition. In another video, geolocated by CNN to southern Israel, near Gaza, Hamas militants are seen taking Israelis captive. Both Iran, the principal sponsor of Hamas, and Hezbollah, another Iran-linked terrorist organization committed to Israel’s destruction, praised Hamas. As sure as night follows day, Israel will retaliate, and millions around the world will blame Israel – and the Jews – ignoring what happened this bloody Saturday. But there’s no denying that what happened on Saturday was an act of terrorism, one that deserves clear, unequivocal condemnation

In the past, Israel has exchanged large numbers of Palestinian prisoners for Israelis held by Hamas. Indeed the Abraham Accords did not do much of anything for the Palestinians. Also, both Israel and Saudi Arabia have a strong common interest today, both seeing Iran as their most dangerous enemy. Iran has also provided support to Hamas, according to the US State Department, in a 2020 report on terrorism. They are betting on a losing horse.”And on Saturday, Khamenei’s top military adviser said that Iran supported Hamas attacks in Israel “until the liberation of Palestine and Jerusalem.”

A day that began with air raid sirens blaring out in the early morning had by lunchtime turned into one of the most terrifying attacks Israel has known in the 75 years of its existence. Though Israel is no stranger to terrorist attacks, Saturday’s assault was unprecedented – not least because of the lack of warning. Since Israel withdrew from Gaza in 2005, it has spent billions of dollars securing the border from attacks. To stop rocket attacks, Israel has used the Iron Dome, an effective rocket defense system developed with help from the United States. The Israel Defense Forces have already begun airstrikes in Gaza targeting Hamas infrastructure, resulting in hundreds of dead and injured.

Fifty years ago this month, Arab members of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries cut off oil shipments to the U.S. in retaliation for American support of Israel during the 1973 Arab-Israeli War. The resulting energy crisis shocked the American people and rocked the economy. Iconic images of boxy sedans and wood-paneled station wagons lined up for miles at the gas pump were seared into our national memory. Even the White House Christmas tree was not spared, remaining unlit as a sign of austerity.

Lidya Jewett Photo: Universal Studios‘The Exorcist” reaffirmed two things we already knew—that adolescent girls seem possessed by demons and that the devil sends his minions to Washington. Yet William Friedkin (who died in August) directed the 1973 film, based on William Peter Blatty ’s novel, with so much gusto that it can’t be compared to anything that came before it. Both a prestige drama and a freak-show shocker, it was the first horror film nominated for the Best Picture Oscar. In inflation-adjusted dollars, it remains the ninth-highest-grossing picture of all time at the domestic box office, and the only R-rated film in the top 20.

The issue has exposed deep divisions between his nationalist-religious supporters and more liberal and secular sections of Israeli society, posing major questions about the constitutional foundations of Israel and its future direction. Over 2,600 Israelis including Zwebner's brother were killed, the largest loss of life Israel has ever suffered in a single war. For many front-line soldiers, the war remains a traumatic event but the feeling many express five decades later is pride in having helped save their country. "I had a meeting with my friends this week which really made me emotional, but you feel very much like you saved the existence of Israel," Zwebner said. For Zwebner, who himself opposes the judicial overhaul, a lesson of the 1973 war was that people had to be prepared to think for themselves rather than blindly accepting what leaders of any kind said.
